Salvete, cives:

Pardon the question if this seems basic, but it's not
something that I've looked into too deeply yet.

What relationship do we have to the Celtic reconstuctionist
groups such as IMBAS? The reason I ask is that I have an
interest in Neolithic influences on European culture,
especially as concerns the Greeks and us Romans; I know that
there are some remnants of this in pre-Olympian period Greek
religion, and I would assume that some of this carried
through to the Roman (especially in the Lupercalia, I would
think), but from what I've come across the opinion is mixed
when this comes to the Celts. If it was there at all it
probably came down through the Picts....

Are there any records of Romans practicing the religions of
or being accepted into the Celtic tribes? I know that we
have a place in the religio for foreign cults such as those
of Mithras and the Magna Mater; do we have a place in it for
Druidism? I've also read that there was at least one attempt
to combine Druidic religion with Stoicism and that some
writers saw a parallel between Druidic and Pythagorean
practices... does anyone know to what extent this was done
or made? Or to what extent we might consider such a
synthesis?

I'm not trying to bring in any form of eclecticism here, but
if there would have been, historically, a less militant
relationship between the Romans and the Celts the
possibility of such a synthesis or coexistence may have been
a possibility. Since our relationship to groups such as
IMBAS is *not* militant in any degree, would it be feasible
to pursue this avenue now, forming it into what it might
have been then?

Valete,
Manius Viaus Greco

>What relationship do we have to the Celtic reconstuctionist

Respectful, at least as far as I know. Some of us - Cassius and myself
included - have a specific interest in the overlap of religions that
occurred during the Romano-Celtic period. There is significant evidence
that suggests Romans adopted some Celtic deities and Celts adopted some
Roman ones. Perhaps the best-known example is the temple of Sulis Minerva
in Bath; artifacts found in the sacred wells indicate its popularity with
both Celtic and Roman populations, as the dual name of the goddess
indicates.

Miranda J. Green's "Symbol and Image in Celtic Religious Art," Ronald
Hutton's "The Pagan Religions of the Ancient British Isles" and Jones and
Mattingly's "Atlas of Roman Britain" all have some interesting and relevant
information.

>Are there any records of Romans practicing the religions of
>or being accepted into the Celtic tribes?

Not as such, but we know that the two populations intermarried until, by
the time the Roman garrison was winding down, it was often impossible to
distinguish a Celt from a Roman.

There is a distinct temple style described as "Celto-Roman." In addition to
dual names (Jupiter Taranis, Mars Loucetius), there are also a few
Celto-Roman divine couples. The best-known is Mercury and Rosmerta, who
were worshiped together in ancient times as a divine couple of prosperity.
Cassius and I did a ritual honoring them two days ago, and are sitting here
waiting for the prosperity to start rolling in!

>I'm not trying to bring in any form of eclecticism here, but
>if there would have been, historically, a less militant
>relationship between the Romans and the Celts the

I think the two cultures definitely shared deities, shrines and customs,
and borrowed freely from one another. However, as Hutton points out, the
extent of this overlap is still a matter of debate among scholars, and the
evidence is inconclusive. So don't take my word as law!

I've been active in the Celtic Pagan community for several years, and can
tell you that many people in that community will look askance at any
mention of the Romans. In fact, when Nova Roma first burst forth onto the
Web last year, it caused a brief flurry of alarm on one of the Celtic
lists. I was able to assure the people there that Nova Roma had no urge for
conquest or repression.

What I'm saying here is that in working with Celtic groups we may have some
damage control to do. I think that work is worth doing, and have been
urging Cassius to write up his thoughts on the subject.

We've also done some work on honoring Celto-Roman deities in a Wiccan
context, which I realize is outside the historical realm of Nova Roma;
nevertheless, the Web site I built for that effort may have some helpful
information on it. The URL is <a href="http://home.maine.rr.com/mepagan/ccw.htm" target="_top" >http://home.maine.rr.com/mepagan/ccw.htm</a>.

Whew! Guess I've gone on long enough...

On behalf of Consul Marcus Cassius Julianus I am making this
announcement because he is having trouble getting through to the list.

He wants all citizens to know all services of Nova Roma will continue
without interruption. Applications for citizenship will still be
processed, the Eagle will be published on schedule, the website will
remain, and the Forum Romanum will not be interrupted.

As soon as his connection problem is sorted out he will be addressing
the nation.

Subject: Resignation of Flavius Vedius Germanicus, Consul et Censor.
From: Cassius622@--------
Date: Mon, 7 Sep 1998 16:38:52 EDT
Salvete, Omnes,

I have been having problems recieving and posting to the NovaRoma list on
OneList, so have been unable to send a message during the event of Germanicus'
decision to abdicate the Consulship.

Pythia's posting just appeared on my server, so I'm taking a chance in the
hopes that this will get through.

The decision of Flavius Vedius Germanicus to leave Nova Roma is without doubt
the saddest event we have faced. Although all services will continue without
interruption, (this too, thanks to Germanicus' help) as an organization and
Micronation we've lost the guidance and companionship a truly great person.
Germanicus has proven himself a skilled leader, thorough administrator, adept
diplomat, and above all, a damned good friend. I personally won't cease to
miss him, and I hope that everyone in Nova Roma will continue to remember him
with all due respect and fondness.

My hope is that he will continue to remain friends with many of us on a
personal basis, and that he might even reconsider his involvement with Nova
Roma at some future time. No matter what happens, I am sure everyone's well
wishes and prayers go with him in whatever other endeavors he undertakes.
Vale, Consul et Amicus!

I'll be conjoining the Senate as soon as possible, Tuesday 9/8/98, to begin
making arrangements to somehow compensate for our loss. Once again, the
NovaRoma website will continue to be updated as always, the chat room and
message board will be open, and new Citizens will continue to join. We will
compensate for this challenge just as the ancient Romans would have, and Nova
Roma will continue to remain much more than the sum of its parts. There will
be more news for everyone soon, after the Senate has convened.

My thanks to everyone for their level-headed support through all of this, and
there will be more news soon!

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus,
Consul, Censor

You got it, Praetor.

Remember that the Eagle is concerned not only with the Religio Romana,
but Rome itself and Nova Roma in particular. I'd love to see more
history, opinions, book reviews, Letter to the Editor, news that you've
come across, archeaological news and anything else that applies to Rome
or Nova Roma. Humor is good, too -- the muse Thalia is always a
stress-reliever.

ALL WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL. If you didn't write it, don't use it. We can
reprint stuff from other publications, but I'll need to get their
permission or it's copyright violation. You can quote things in
articles, just be sure to attribute the quote to the original author.
All material is copywrited by Nova Roma, but there will be no problem if
you want to use your own material elsewhere. You wrote it, you're
entitled. We can't pay anyone, after all. Please don't send us things
you picked up off the Internet, because it's notorious for ripping off
other people's work, some of it copyrighted. Notifying us of interesting
links or Web pages is fine, though.

Please use your Roman name for your by-line.

I've gotten a lot of Pagan articles, but most of it is Wiccan-oriented.
Now a lot of us are Wiccan, but this isn't a Wiccan group or
publication. So, with all due respect for Wiccans and Christians and
Jews and every other religion, please keep the religious issues centered
on Roman paganism and the Religio Romana.

Eagle is published on Microsoft Word 7.0. I can accept articles as
e-mail attachments. Please save them as ASCII plain text, with no fancy
formatting. Graphics and photos can be sent as .jpg .tif .gif .pcx or
.eps formats as e-mail attachments. If you send me photos I can scan
them and return them to you if you send a stamped, self-addressed
envelope.

My e-ma--------ddress ----------------oon@--------
Snail-mail: The Eagle, 74 Essex St. #1, Salem, MA 01970

You can send subscription checks or money orders to the snail-mail
address and I'll enter your mailing address in the database and forward
the check to Patricia Cassia. Make it out to Nova Roma and note that
it's for an Eagle subscription.

Your subscription should include your real name AND your Roman name. If
you prefer to remain anonymous, then your Roman name will do as long as
you can get your mail with no problem. Your $5 subscription is for one
year from the date we get your check or money order.

Right now, the Eagle is coming out on the Ides of every month. I'd like
to keep it that way, but we need to fill it! If we can't, we'll have to
cut back to every other month.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

On behalf of the Gens Cornelia, I wish our ex-Consul the best of luck with
every future endeavor. And, I, personally would be pleased if he would
still visit us either in the mailing list, or in the chat room, becuase is
input has been extremely valuable, and being a founder, his guidiance is,
has been, and always will be vital to the success of Nova Roma. And I hope
that in the near future, he decides to become a citizen again. Good luck
Germanicus, I wish you the very best.
