He has generously offered to forward mail that arrives there, but we will
be getting a new P.O. Box, probably tomorrow. Cassius or I will alert you.

Salve Peter!

Indeed you have greatly helped me. In fact my preferred period of military
history research are the 3rd, 4th and 5th centuries AD, so we have a lot in
common.
As to Byzantium, wasn't it Christian from the beginning? With exception of
Imperator Julianus, where does the polytheism fit?
Do you belong to anything like Nova Roma for Byzantine restauration? Maybe
there could be a protocol and mutual support.

Vale!

P.S. Lusitania is Portugal. After being conquered by the Visgoths, the
Byzantines managed to reconquest our land (with the support of our
profoundly romanized people) in the 6th century, and ruled in Lusitania
until 622 or 623AD.

Dear Antonius,

I think you'll find the Roman army is well and living in a number of
places around the world. I am not a Nova Roma citizen but applaud your
efforts all the same. My great love is Hellenic Polytheism in its
manifold expressions - the Religio Romana being one. As for my
re-enactment interests I must confess to being a Byzantinist first and
foremost. Here are some existing groups Nova Roma may want to recruit if
they haven't already!!

While I'd hate to reduce the overall artistic quality of the site with yet
another photo of me, I *am* hoping that we'll be able to add a tasteful
tribute to Germanicus once the site has been transferred completely. It would
be a shame if his many contributions to Nova Roma were forgotten as everything
progresses.

Valete,

From: NovaRomaNH@--------

Salvete, Omnes,

I am more than pleased to make an official announcement to the Citizens on the
list... Our Praetor Urbanus, Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus, has been apponted to
the position of Senator in Nova Roma!

Senate has unanimously voted to appoint L. Equitius to fill the recent gap
left by the departure of Flavius Vedius Germanicus. While Germanicus can in no
way be "replaced", Equitius has done much to prove himself in his own right,
and we're all enthusiastic about the new change!

Congratulations, Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus, Senator of Nova Roma! :)

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus
Consul

Yes! This is a good idea. This should be after they have completed
thier first turn.
Do we have a picture of Germanicus that could be used? Any other ideas?

The Lusitania Provincia and its Praetor are glad with the decision of the

As Paterfamilias for Gens Ulleria and as a Citizen of Nova Roma, I would
like to concur with the Senate being the Voice of the People and
Republic of Nova Roma in these matters.

Valete Germanicus! May the Gods smile on Thee and Thine wherever the
Zephyrs may guide the path of your life's journey. If it is in the
stars that you return to Nova Roma one day, I hope that a place can be
made for you in the Patrician Class once again. There are men who are
noble by accident of birthright, and there are men who are noble by
virtue of the way they are. In my short time of knowing you through
correspondance, and in seeing the child of your heart and mind, you are
the latter. Be Well, Be Strong and Find That which you and yours need
for Peace, Contentment and Prosperity in your lives.

Salvete Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus! Gens Ulleria will stand by you. I
believe that you shall prove an able successor. May Virtue be your
guide! May Intellect be your strength! May May Passion fuel your
ambitions for the Republic!

May the Blessings of the Holy Ones be continued for the Senate and
People of Nova Roma!

To the best of my knowledge, poly atheism was never a concern
with the Empire. The Pechenegs and other Foederatii brought
their belief systems to the Army, but it never caught on with the

I noticed that there are Legiones with the same number and

I've noticed that too. The problem is that some of the units grow
independently and do not belong to Nova Roma. That's one of the reasons I
would like to establish a centralized organization for such units (of course
with the consent of those re-enactment unit members).

If I am looking at the Legion List properly, the bulk of thses people
are re-enactors unconnected with our (at present) ephemeral Nation.
I've looked through the list of Legions from Roman times (in two books I
own on Roman Armies), and there is no indication of senior and junior
being appended. The same names were reused, under different Consuls and
Caesers, at various times and places in the Republic and Empire.

As the Keeper of the (I hope) Ultimate List of Roman reenactment
societies, I *have* to chip in here...

Let not the largeness of Nova Roma's significance in our hearts blind
us to the smallness of her (current) presence in the world. *Every*
Legion and Cohort on my (19K text file) reenactor listing formed and
grew up independently of Nova Roma, and most of them are not even aware
of her existence. I have sent Consul Cassius a copy of the listing so
that he might contact the various units and rectify that situation...!
(Hopefully he will also see fit to post it on the Web site.) >(<|:-)

The previous version, which went out in January, is visible on the
Classics Pavilion
<www.pen.k12.va.us/Anthology/pav/classics/NetRes1.html>; the Stateside
portion is on Mike Bishop's Armamentarium
<www.ncl.ac.uk/~nantiq/arma/welc/info.htm#REENACTORS>. Anyone else who
would like a copy, feel free to e-mail me privately.

I have been Keeper of the List for three years and am currently
gathering info for the next release. Antonius Gryllus, I want to thank
you for posting Peter's list; there are several new groups on it that I
didn't have!

Truly our habit of running around in Legionary armor on the weekends is
spreading ever more rapidly...and yet, in line with my Nova Roma
thought at the beginning of this post, all the Roman reenactors in the
world put together would probably not make an understrength Cohort. I
would not be terribly worried about organizing/centralizing them just
yet; I've got all I can do just to put them in contact with each other!

[A Cohort is roughly 400-600 men.]

As some of you may know, Germanicus appointed me keeper of the Nova Roma
web site upon his resignation. I'm qualified for the job in some ways - I'm
a professional Web developer in my "other" life - but my knowledge of
ancient Rome is somewhat rudimentary as yet. (Hanging around Cassius has
greatly improved it!)

Of course I cannot do this alone, and in the coming weeks I'll be actively
soliciting volunteers to help with various aspects of the site. If you have
a special area of knowledge (such as Lucius Marius Fimbrius' knowledge of
Roman re-enactment groups), please consider lending a little of your time
to help get good information out to others. If you have Web skills, I also
want to hear from you.

Also, if anyone is interested in learning Web work, there are some areas of
the site that need a small overhaul - not to rip up Germanicus' work, but
to hone it and adjust to new circumstances. I would happily do some
tutoring in exchange for getting some of the grunt-work done!

Among other things, we're moving the site from a server with FrontPage
extensions to one without them. (Cassius has generously offered to pay for
this, although this shouldn't stop you from donating toward this if you
feel so inclined.) The move should be complete within a couple of days,
and you'll notice a few slight revisions on the main page, aimed at making
the most popular areas of the site more easily accessible.

Of course I'll be relying heavily on the ideas and suggestions of this most
excellent group! Thanks in advance.

When the empire split to become the East and West, the Roman army units which
had vexillations in both were titled Senior and Junior respectively.
Senior units were the parent unit, while junior were the detached

Salve, Omnes! Salve, Lucius Marius Fimbria!

I should say firstly that I am not yet a member of Nova Roma; I am seriously
considering that option at the moment - so please remember that any comments
I may make are meant constructively, with a keen interest in and with all
good wishes for the future of Nova Roma.

I have been (with a break of about 8 months) a re-enactor (miles gregarius
1st/2nd century CE) with Legio XIIII GMV (aka the Roman Military Research
Society/Vexillatio Legionis Geminae) and am currently in the process of
rejoining. I created the original web site of that British group in October
1997, and some of you may have viewed it since - I sincerely thank Lucius
Marius Fimbrius for including the site in his list, and for quoting me so
positively! The site is now defunct and someone else is creating a new
site, though when that will be available I do not as yet know.

But more to the immediate point, I have to support the comments of L. Marius
Fimbrius when he points out that the majority of re-enactors are totally
independent of Nova Roma and are not even aware of her existence. In fact
the majority of their members probably do not even use the Internet, despite
the web sites popping up all over the world. What the response of
re-enactors in general to Nova Roma will be is difficult to say; while of a
pagan inclination myself, and very keen on this area of your work, I suspect
most would look upon the idea of restoring the Religio Romana as at the very
least a bit strange, which is probably going to be one sticking point in
forming relationships with such groups. On the other hand, I heard just
last week of a British re-enactor who has been performing Mithraic
initiations in the vicinity of Hadrian's Wall...

Then of course you have the problem that it is unlikely that many groups
will be keen to overturn their proud tradition of independence (witness the
politics and infighting between some re-enactment groups in the past) and
give up what might be seen as some of their sovereignty to a relatively
unknown, albeit very promising and fascinating group like Nova Roma. Of
course if you had offices in the Forum Romanum in the eternal city itself,
that might make a difference... :-) In any event, I feel you have an uphill
struggle ahead of you to even get them to work together, let alone in the
name of Nova Roma! Nonetheless, I wish you well in this worthy endeavour!

Please do not think that I wish to pour cold water on anyone's enthusiasm
for reviving the traditions of the world's greatest republic and empire; but
I do think we have to be realistic at this stage.

Incidentally, last year in Britannia we recreated the world's first full
century of late 1st century Roman infantry for over a thousand years. And
that was with the help of some of the groups from Europe and the USA. Great
fun, and a significant achievement, but we're perhaps not yet ready to
reconquer the Empire, even though it still stands in our hearts!

Salve et Vale

Salve,

Well, it seems to me that you have some very valid points
as far as the difficulty in bringing various reenactor groups into the
fold.
Obviously some Christian members or what have you may have an objection
with joining Nova Roma for endorsing paganism or just people enjoying
their independence and going about their business as usual.
We should make every effort to make the initial invitation to them,
as you are also correct in saying most of them probably don't have a
clue that we exist. If not an entire reenacter group, there are to be
certain individuals somewhere within those groups that would probably
really enjoy participating in Nova Roma.
I also think that maybe we should list ourselves with more search
engines and get on banner exchange programs whenever feasible. Many of
us are here just because we were lucky enough to punch the right word
into the right search engine looking for something else initially where
we also saw a link with Nova Roma and got sidetracked.. As in business
location is everything (even more so for the web).
Then there are also so many pagan websights with generic ads from
all walks of life. If we used exactly the same wording and format as our
flyers, that may be good places to advertise what we are in a
nonobtrusive manner. I think though everything we do should be
preapproved- what is advertised on the web and where.- Sounds like a job
for a Censor. This would keep some of our more industrious citizens from
advertising potentially on websights that Nova Roma as a whole may not
wish to be connected with- such as a controvertial political websight.
I'm sure there are countless people who would love to belong and
interact with the rest of us, if they only knew we existed.
Anyone reading this have any thoughts?

It would be rather unreasonable to expect that you end up doing all
the work for the web page. I'm sure that we all really appreciate your
committment to maintain the page.
Anyway, maybe it would be better if where possible you gave a
general outline of what exactly you would like done where possible. In
other words giving a direction to the scheme of things. In that way I
think people would be more willing to step up and volunteer if they knew
beforehand exactly what it was they were volunteering for. This could
also prove to be a wonderful way to get citizens more involved and yet
still keep a centralized control ( a method to the madness).

I'm still getting a feel for what IS on the site and what needs doing. Was
anyone besides Germanicus working on the Calendar section? Whoever was
doing so got about halfway through the year in writing descriptions of the
various holidays; I'd like to do a little revamping for an easier-to-browse
section, finish the descriptions of holidays and, where possible, add
sources for finding out more about each day's meaning.

That's just one section; I haven't had time to delve into the others in
detail. Domitianus, you've already (privately) pointed out one bad link
from the Camenaeum section; we'll need someone to check those links every
couple of months to make sure they're still good (and still refer to useful
information; please see the recent Hellenic Front controversy, in which a
useful Web site changed its focus to something we didn't wish to link to).

With any luck, my role will be reduced as far as possible; that's a
necessity, as I have several other time-consuming projects in my life. I
was just putting out a general call for volunteers. If you volunteer early,
you get more choices of what you'd like to do!

Thank you!

We could use a priest of Janus. Janus is very, very important to Rome
