Salvete!

In Peter Connolly, 'The Roman Army', we can read the following (translated
from the portuguese edition):

"(...) But the indisciplined soldiers of Vitelius, although fatiged by the
long march, and without commander, still managed to attack. The battle
lasted all night. The Moon was behind the troops of Primus, giving him the
advantage of attacking in the shadow. The control of the battle changed from
side to side. At dawn, one of the oriental legions rose a cry of salute to
the Sun, as was its habit. The vitelians, thinking that Mucianus had
arrived, broke their ranks and ran away to Cremona, crowding inside the camp
(...)"

Was that "cry of salute to the Sun" mithraitic? Is there any evidence of
more practices like the one described? Someone has an idea of what the
sources of Peter Connolly are?

Hooray! This means that the Nova Roma site has finally switched over to the
new server. You might want to dump your cache files in your computer, and hit
"reload" to bring up the page in it's new form.

I've just tried loading the new page and it's come up fine. Patricia has had
to change the page format somewhat... the black front page with Octavius is
gone, and there is no scrolling banner on the main page. Still, all the links
I've tried are working. This is a GREAT thing, since we've been unable to
recieve applications from new citizens for over a week while the old server
was going through the transferral process.

Benedictus or Blessing

Venator (Hunter, my Cognomen, from my profession of being a Technical

for a large Sports Store. Also I am a Hunters' Safety Instructor, as
well as a Hunter and Active Conservationist.)

My full Roman Name is: Stephanus Ullerius Venator

Stephanus (the Praenomen analog of the name my parents gave me, Steven)
Ullerius (My Gens, named after the Nordic-Germanic God Uller, who,

useful bits, guided by the Latin dictionary by my computer.

Salvete, Omnes,

The Nova Roma page IS currently down. There's obviously something that isn't
set right on the new server. The problem will be fixed this afternoon. I was
able to load the new Nova Roma page this morning, but can't now.

Thanks for your patience during the transition!

It will take about a week for all the domain name servers on the Internet
to realize that www.novaroma.org has changed servers. Cassius, for example,
can see the "new" page from home, but my own server doesn't have it yet.

Please be patient during the next week or so as the Internet figures out
we've moved.

It's taken from Tacitus. You are talking about the battle of 2nd Cremona.
The legio in questian was III Cyrenaica. They were helios worshippers.
They worshipped the god Heliogabalus, who like the Egyptian Aten was
personified by the sun. Sunrise was always greeted with loud cheers.
These cheers were overheard by the Vitellian faction, These german/gaulic
legiones believed the Flavian faction had received reenforcements to their
their army and now outnumbered the Vitellians. They retreated, leaving the
field and the victory to the Flavians.

A good book about that battle and all of 69 AD is "The Long Year, AD 69."
By Wellesley. It's published by Paul Elek Limited, London 1975.

See, right there we could have the start of a brewing/vinting guild
or college if there was any interest in people recreating ancient brews
that the Romans enjoyed. Could be quite a lot of fun in a section
somewhere in a future Nova Roma event. As I know absolutely nothing
about making wine I should say I wouldn't mind learning. Learning in
itself as I see it is primarily a tool in which to help people live or
to enjoy life a little more and this might be a good place to start
enjoying it a little more-lol.
I do wonder though exactly what kind of wines as we would define them
were available to the Romans? Did they actually have a lot of variety
in types of wines? I always assumed they drank something similar to a
burgandy wine and used it extremely often very watered down as it was
useful in killing parasites and somewhat purifying the water even in
small amounts,
I also imagine that even a touch of wine in our drinking water would
be useful in killing off any potential crypto-sporidium parasites.

No expert on this, but I remember once reading that
Roman wines--in general--tasted terrible and that's
why they always cut such with water. So it must have
been the "effect" rather than to the tastebuds that
appealed. :-)

Salve,

So far nothing at all has happened within the Pontificial College. Several
applications for priesthood have been made to date. However, the call for
priests went out before the College was even created, so no procedures for
choosing priests has been established. We're trying to work that process out
now. I'm hopeful that we will be set soon... two of our Pontiffs have been
extremely busy with the current school semester, so we're waiting for their
schedules to be freed up to allow more discussion.

Health and Luck Vinnie - Salus et Fortuna Dexippus!

Hope your A.H.A. sponsorships amounted to more than your quota!

I posted a message on the Forum Message Board.

I volunteer to (at least) get a Brewing and Vinting S.I.G. going at this
time. Once I get some health concerns addressed, I shall be happy to
help (READ THAT TWICE!), that is HELP, set up a Collegia dedicated to
the drowning of little yeast beasts in sugar water and drinking the
wonderful results of their collective sacrifice. When I was a Brewing
and Vinting judge in the SCA, I had some wonderfully documented,
accurately made decoctions which were perfectly Period, and dreadful to
drink. I prefer to use the "Creative" part and make consumeables for
the modern palette.

Laxarum - Nil Vexarum - Habere Coquerum Domus

S. Ullerius Venator (Auctor Vinum et Cerevisia et Mead)

Postscriptum: I prefer my spices in the Metheglin, but I'll share that!
My latest batchof Mead is a potent Pyment (a brew of Honey and Grape
juice, close I think to the Nectar ehich the Gods of Olympus imbibed),
17% Alkie, nicely semi-sweet and dark ruby in color, yummy!

In my rarely humble opinion, their is no such thing as a stupid
question.
Stupidity lies in militantly remaining ignorant.

I recall, in my large library on brewing, some recipies for lo-alcohol
all and beer. I'll look into it and post my results, or better yet, an
occassional column to, hummm, perhaps, "The Eagle?" Seriously, one can
brew light, non-intoxicating "quick meads" and other drinks. Unlike the
modern process of using a reverse osmosis or heating system to remove
alcohol from regular beer and wine to create the lo-alcohol versions.

In Service, Vale!
