Subject: New Patricians?

I was looking through the constitutios and FAQ's earlier today and I
came accross the question and answer:
Q: Can I have a patrician gens?

A: According to our Constitution, only the first thirty gentes
(families) to join Nova Roma are counted among the ranks of the
patrician class. The gens name is irrelevant to this; even if your
gens was historically patrician, it may be counted as plebeian in Nova
Roma. Only if a patrician gens becomes extinct can the Censors elevate
a plebeian gens to patrician status.

Well I thought, since Germanici's left, we should have 29 Patrician
Gentes now, but we have only 28.
Are two Plebian Gentes going to be elevated to Patricians?

As I understand it, the plebeians are plebeians because they've chosen to
be. There is still room for two more patrician gentes.

The Patrician openings are from two resignations- the latest one
was from Germanicus, the first was from a woman who called herself I
believe Sum Isida. Our constitution does allow those vacancies to be
filled. Though I thought about it before I rather hope that we go onto
other issues for the time being. For one thing how would a gen be fairly
chosen for elevation to patrician status? Maybe it could be considered
an added little plus bonus for a gen with a long history of contribution
and activity in Nova Roma- I imagine it would be a title to be applied
for and approved by the Senate.
Why don't we hold off a while yet and wait to see who are going to be
the major players in Nova Roma from among the Plebians- the people in
for the long haul who are going to help build on to Nova Roma the most.
I think that practice would help to validate class structure as earned
recognition for gen names over the course of time. Any good arguements
against that?

Salvete,

As the paterfamilias of a Plebean gens, I wish to concur with the
Patrician Drusus in the matter of inducting new Patricians. This
certainly is not (and should not be) a big issue for many citizens.
My gens is happily Plebean. In the historic period of Roman
civilization, no source tells accurrately why there was such a
division in the society. Now, as then there are no special privileges
accorded to the Patricians legally, financially or religiously. As my
friend Drusus pointed out, there was a certain degree of honor
ascribed to the Patrician families (the rich ones at least), and
perhaps a Plebean gens who has performed exceptional service to Nova
Roma could have the opportunity presented to them to join the
Patricians. This indeed might be a suitable show of thanks by the
Nova Roman Republic. Before all the Plebeans rush out to vie for the
Patrician honors, I would ask them to consider the following:
1)historically the distinctions meant little; 2)traditionally one
Consul and one Censor were Plebean (90%+ of the time); 3)Lex Ogulinia
(ca 300BC) gave Plebeans official access to high religious offices and
lastly; the Tribunate of the People was a powerful office held only by
the Plebeans. These are a few things to consider before thinking about
leaving the Plebeans and seeking entry into the list Patrician gentes.
Of course, this is not an urgent issue by any means.

Respectfully,
Avidius Tullius Qf Callidus, Praedans
Paterfamilias, gens Tullia

I believe that your suggestion shows wisdom. At the present stage of
development in the Re-Building, we should concentrate our efforts on
polishing the infrastructure from the building blocks chosen by the
Founders. They gave us a solid foundation, we must erect a strong
superstructure, our children and future generations will provide the
marble facings and decorations.

I remain, (culturally) a resident Germanic Heathen in favor of the New
Rome.
