Subject: First Pontificial College Vote!

Salvete, omnes,

At last, the Pontificial College has had the opportunity to convene
successfully, and make a start on building an official foundation for the
priesthoods of the Religio Romana.

The first vote has been on the establishment of the Vestal Order, which has
been submitted by Flavia Claudia Juliana. The vote has been a unanimous vote
of YES for accepting Flavia's proposal. She is now officially the Chief Vestal
of Nova Roma, charged with the duties of keeping the sacred hearth and
ensuring the blessings of the Goddess Vesta upon our Micronation.

Any and all enquiries can be made to Flavia Claudia herself... her Email
address will be added into the Priesthood section of the Nova Roma page soon.

Congratulations, Flavia Claudia Juliana, Vestal of Nova Roma!

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus
Consul

To the Senate and People of Nova Roma, greetings:

I am honored to be Nova Roma's first Chief Vestal.
The altar was set up last night with the statues of Vesta & Pales, with
a votive candle to serve as the Flame. A special section is devoted to
the memory of Flavius Claudius Julianus, Rome's last Pagan emperor.

Prayers for the growth and strength of Nova Roma and the success of our
goals are ongoing!

Blessings of Magna Vesta and the Gods of Rome be with all of you!

Flavia Claudia Juliana,
Virgo Maxima

Congratulations Flavia Claudia! I know you will make Vesta proud!

I did read your proposal when it was sent over the list and didn't see
anything in there that I would object to, but alas, I have forgotten its main
points.

Can you e-mail it to me or can the College of Pontiffs post it somewhere on
the site? I would like to re-read it to become familiar with the practices
our Vestals will be undertaking.

Thanks,

Subject: Vesta & Pales
From: missmoon@--------

As requested, here's more information about Vesta and Pales

If Pales was the "consort" of Vesta, her temple would be more accurately
located in Lesbos. Pales is the Goddess of shepherds, and her festival
is the Paralia. (the Palatine Hill is named for Pales.) This is on April
21, which coincides with the founding of Rome, as the former abode of
shepherds, and with the date that the Palladium was brought to Rome. The
Paralia was intended to purify the sacred groves and fountains that may
have been accidentally polluted or injured by the herds. The custom of
using the blood of the October Horse as a sacifice is germaine to Pales,
but was continued under the Vestals. (By the way, Barbara Walker -okay,
not always a sure source - theorizes that the Halloween game of
pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey may have its roots in the October Horse. Take
it with a grain of salt.)

I haven't found much relating Pales and Vesta, but it's my own theory
that the worship of Vesta, formalized by Numa at Mt. Alba, was
associated with Pales' worship because of Pales' importance to the
farmers and shepherds around Alba Longa. I'm thinking that perhaps the
Vestals were originally priestesses of Pales, but I can't prove it.
There is a theory that Pales was one of the disguises of Vesta under the
name of Diva Palatua. (Robert Briffault, THE MOTHERS, Macmillan, 1927.
Also, his source was Servius.)

Pales/Pallas was kind of a trans-gender goddess, who started out as the
ass-god Pallas, a priapic god. Priests of Pallas wore ass-headed masks.
This is probably how the "consort" idea came about, and the theory that
the Palladium was a fertility symbol. But by the time the Vestals were
instituted and certainly by the time statues were made of Vesta, Pallas
had become Pales, a goddess.

You're right: there were no statues of Vesta in the Temple of Vesta. She
was originally numen, and was personified by fire, especially the sacred
fire in her Temple. However, I've chosen to set up the JBL statue of
Vesta and Pales because in later Rome, she did have statues, probably
because of her association with Hestia. And since Pales/Pallas is
represented, we get two gods for the price of one! Maybe three!

As for having sex with the Pontifex Maximus as the representative of the
God, I rather doubt it. At any rate, this isn't the sort of thing we'd
like to institute in Nova Roma. Of course, if we elect Kevin Sorbo or
Antonio Banderas as P.M., ask me again.

Well, if it's on the Web site, then I must be an Official Virgin. How
many people can say that at my age?

Ah- I tried to use the e-mail address listed for the pontiffs but
it was returned for some reason as undeliverable.
All I wanted to know was if Germanicus had forwarded my application
to become a member of the Sodales Fetiales to each of you ( the
Pontiffs) about 2 months ago. I was fairly sure that he had but I
thought I should be certain now. Just so I know that it's still on the
backburner somewhere I really would appreciate having one of you let me
know.

Thanks,

Gaius Drusus Domitianus

Salus Et Fortuna Lucius Marconius, Salve!

I second the motion! Your enthusiasm and willingness to serve are
SUPERB! Everyone jumps the starter's signal once in awhile. Please,
re-announce your candidacy at the prescribed time. As a Citizen of Nova
Roma and a resident of Provincae Magna Lacus, I implore you not to fade
away.

I shall not be standing for Religious or Secular office due to religious
scruple, but I shall be a full Citizen otherwise. I want enthusiastic
leadership who are unafraid to make a bold move, as you did.

Benedictus, Vale!
