Salvete !

Officium me vocate ! This next election I will be running for the
Governor ( Praetor ) of the Great Lakes Provincia. As the Governor some
of my goals will include increasing my activities in acquiring new
citizens for Nova Roma, maintaining an active dialogue with as many
citizens as possible and sponsoring Nova Roma events and other Roman
related activities.

One of my newest ventures is organizing the means and finances to place
an article, similar to the NR flyers, in my local newspaper. I figure
this is a great way to get Nova Roma's message out to approximately
300,000 readers.

Well, remember me when you vote. My thoughts are for all of you- the
citizens of Nova Roma.

Fortuna fortibus favet.

I was wondering what the racial makeup of Nova Roma is. I ran into a
Black woman a while ago who was a Roman Pagan and she was afraid she
would not be welcome or might feel uncomfortable in Nova Roma. Paganism
tends to be welcoming of all, but I honestly could not comfort her any,
as I do not know how many 'Minorities' are citizens of Nova Roma.

Does anybody know?

Salvete amici!

My answer is that there are no minorities in Nova Roma, as we are all equal.
When we talk about minorities, we talk about segregation, about people being
different. In my view this does not apply in Nova Roma. Here it doesn't
matter being white or black, homossexual or heterosexual, monogamous or
poligamous. And remember that Caracala gave Roman citizenship to all free
citizens of the empire. I'm sure many were not white skinned.
Tell your friend that she's welcome, and will be treated as a citizen like
all the others.

Vale!

Let's try to leave race issues out of Nova Roma. It is a meeting

discriminate- period. Being universal is the strength in Nova Roma and

I am a new member in Nova Roma and am just getting my feet wet, so to
speak. I like what I see, and it is my intention to continue unless
something kills my interest. I can't think of anything that would kill
my interest faster than the taint of racial descrimination. I have no
sympathy whatsoever with such nor will I tolerate it in my daily life.

My vote is for the lady to jump in and enjoy the waters.

Since I am kind of new to Nova Roma, can anyone give me a run-down on
the provinces within Nova Roma, together with the political hierarchy
within each province. I am particularly interested in the New England
province where I live. My studies in Roman History to date have been
mostly military with some in the religion of Mithras. If I am to be a
active citizen of Nova Roma, it is apparent that I will have to join at
some point, the ranks of those who are the political leaders of Nova
Roma, or at least perform in the "political lists" as a candidate. I
also need the following:

-Duties of the Provincial Hierarchy;
-Time of Elections for the New England
Hierarchy;
-An idea of how an election campaign is run for an
office within the New England hierarchy.

At some time in the future as the officers of Nova Roma can get to it or
can find some willing individual, the above information should be
provided each new member who joins Nova Roma, if that is not already in
place.

Please forgive my brash interruption of your routine, and perhaps it is
not looked upon with favor to advise my leaders in this new world, but I
am a soldier of the olsd school and I find, i my experience, that the
brashness of a junior officer often makes the difference between
disaster and victory.

Somehow I should have known to keep my mouth shut on the race issue. I
was never accusing anyone of discriminating against anyone. The issue of
race is real and cannot easily be ignored. It's hard to ignore when
you've been faced with it your entire life, both inside and outside of
Paganism. I know there is no 'racism', or 'sexism' or whatever in Nova
Roma (or if there is, I haven't experienced it, but my life has been
blessed that way until recently). The issue was raised because a woman
who has know far more discrimination and hatred than even I have wanted
to know to put herself at ease.

The website says Nova Roma doesn't discriminate. However, *everyone*
says that. They have to if they want to avoid lawsuits. It's the
American way. And segregating can be dangerous, as history has taught
us. I tried it once -- the lawsuit is still pending.

This woman does not know that there is at least one Black already in Nova
Roma. Actually she doesn't believe me. I was hoping to direct her
somewhere where she might find some 'proof' and 'comfort'. She wants the
'family' but is afraid of being accepted and then rejected. Poor thing
is scared half to death!

I will do what I can to help her. Sorry to have offended.

Salve,

Actually, we DON'T know. We simply don't ask this sort of question when people
enroll, and couldn't care less. Historically there were plenty of black Roman
Citizens, especially in the African provinces, so you friend shouldn't be too
concerned. I hope you haven't suffered too much flack from this as I suppose
it IS a legitimate question. Still, think about it... if we were "keeping

Roma, wouldn't that in itself say something?

Not at all! Again, the question was valid enough, and I don't think anyone was
offended. It's just a little bit of a "non sequiter" in this particular
instance. The beauty of Classical civilization was that they didn't HAVE race
issues in the way that the modern world does. Roman Citizens came from every
ethnic background and culture, and nobody cared a whit.

Race IS an issue in the modern world, and there's nothing wrong with a healthy
concern.

Decius Iunius Palladius and myself are the Censors of Nova Roma, the folks who
approve Citizenship. If anyone ever has specific questions, they're welcome to
correspond with us privately to get them answered. Considering the fact that
we haven't turned down a single application as yet, I'd say we're doing pretty
well in the field of "equal accessibility... ;)

I honestly have no clue what the racial makeup of Nova Roma is. We simply
don't ask. If it's any help I'm pretty darned sure we have some Latin
Americans, since we've got Provincia in Brazil and whatnot. Is that helpful?

> I will do what I can to help her. Sorry to have offended.

Not to worry, you haven't offended in the least! You asked a valid question,
and as far as I've seen from the list so far, nobody has freaked out over it.
Again, if there's anything I, or my fellow Censor can do, we're accessible
right from the Nova Roma website!

Salvete omnes

I think that the formation of Nova Roma provides us a great opportunity to
form a community that really celebrates diversity, rather than promotes
dangerous double standards and speech codes.

Noone has to feel like a minority here. What binds us together is a feeling
of spiritual kinship to the Romans, that may find its expression in any
number of ways, such as discussion of Roman history, worship of the gods, or
whatever. None of us is a descendent of Julius Caesar, so what difference
can our lineage, and thus, race, make?

I think that your acquaintance could be comforted knowing that there are
gentes all over the world, including quite a few in Brazil and even one in
Russia. In a community like this, it hardly makes sense even to think in
terms of black and white, an odious, artificial dichotomy to begin with.

I welcome anyone who adores Rome, and I am sure that other Novaromani do as
well.

In the late Republic, I am pretty sure that praetors were elected officials. The Senate would then appoint the elected praetors to go govern provinces. Sometimes (usually?) this was done by drawing lots, right?

I guess I should go re-read the constitution to see how Nova Roma handles this.

Dear Amethyst,

Everyone before me has pretty much spelled out Nove Roma's position, and
that is the beauty of our Micronation. I feel however that one issue
needs to be addressed. There may be individual racists among us, and we
can't guarentee that there won't be occasions when offense is taken. I
would hope that we would all rise to the occasion, and react to such
bigotry when it occurs, and in fact, we have done just that in the past.

As anyone who frequents the Taverna can attest, we have had some
barbaric intruders with racist agendas. Of course we don't believe they
were citizens, but due to the nature of the chat area, we have no way of
knowing. (and of course most of us what to see a change of chat room!)

My point is that we want your friend to join us. For those of us who
honor the Gods of
Olympos, Nova Roma represents a real fellowship. But I hope she wont
leave us because some moron makes an ignorant or malicious (and there IS
a difference) remark.
She needs to understand that does not reflect Nova Roma, but only the
individual who made the remark.

All the very best, Pythia

That I do not doubt, simply because the racists are everywhere and it is
almost impossible to weed them out.

I'm working on it!!! She is from my IRL world and is not overly Internet
savvy. It is hard for her to believe me when I tell her Nova Roma is
where she may want to be. The choice, of course, is hers. I do not have
Internet access right now, but hope to someday get it and show her the
site. That may alleviate some of her fears.

You'd have to wait your turn, girl! I'VE GOT FIRST DIBBS!

Well, I don't know what everybody's nationality is (nor do I care) but if you
speak to her again, please stress the fact that we are an international
organization and we welcome all people regardless of race, nationality,
gender, religion, sexual preference, or whatever.

Hell...if you guys haven't crucified me yet...blah blah blah!
