There is some sentiment toward changing our chat room. Cassius mentioned to
me that some Citizens had trouble using Talk City, our former chat room
provider. Who were you and what problems did you have? It looks like they
have upgraded their options to allow for access by Web browsers and IRC
clients. Any objections to our heading back in that direction?

I loved Talk City. It was fairly fast -- without that annoying wait
while the screen refreshes and draws the marble background.
But then, I wasn't one of the people who had an inaccessibility
problem. They may feel differently. But if Talk City has solved the
problems, let's definitely look into it. If you do, see what options
they have for booting disrupting or obscene chatters. Also, see if they
have an 'ignore' option -- AOL was pretty good with this, their one
advantage!-- where you can hit 'ignore' and the disrupter can type his
little fingers off, but no one has to see him unless they choose to.

I vote to change back to Talk City, although Beeseen does have some
nice features, Talk City seems to run more smoothly.

Talk City is fine if it has improved, fixing those previous
problems. They also are wonderful for just kicking out the disruptive
but there was never any ignore function.

As I recall the most discussed online problem with Talk City was that they
would have Their Advertisements come up in the middle of the Chat Text just
like it was something that someone had typed in. In a busy chat one could
almost wonder why on of the other of us had put in a line about Aluminium
Siding or the Latest HOT News from Nautilus. You get my drift. I had troubles
connecting then, but I was having trouble with that computer. Check if Talk
City will work with Dexippus's 286 (construct of bearskins and flint knives).
Talk City also had (Had) an option to talk outside with anybody who had checked
in.
Hope this helps.

Salve Romani!!
In regard to the changing of Chat Servers, I would most humbly ask that
you consider those of us who do not have a computer (even an older one)
on line, but who are using WebTV. The WebTV system seems to be a good
basic system, but does not include some of the later innovations in
software. Whoever s going to make the final decision in regard to this
proposed change, I would most respectfully ask that they consider this
mode of communication. If you need to know any specifics, please
contact me and I will attempt to find out the detailed capabilities of
WebTV. Plase be easy on this Roman as my expertise is the military and
not "Computer Speak."
Thank you for you most kind attention to this message!

This is a very good point. Can it be done? How, if at all, might it impact
the rest of us?

Salve Honorable Romani!
Actually I prefer the term mariner. "Fair Winds and Following Seas" are
the perfect conditions for a sailing ship of any century. Conditional
to any ship's individual "rig", winds are on a different "quarter:, but
"Folowing Seas are always desirable even in Storm Conditions. It is the
18th and 19th century salute to friends ot to those who you woud call
friend, wishing them the best conditions for their particular"rig." I
occasion to use such when I am talking or writing to friends or to those
who I would have as friends. I have a background of 50 years of
involvement with the sea, as master of my own vessel, 20 years in the
United Staes Submarine Force, 20 years in the construction of
submarines, and the aquired rank of Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S.
Navy. I have qualified as Officer of the Deck at sea, on large naval
vessels and Command Officer in port. I have 7 years of experience
working with young peope who aspire to make the sea, thier home and
their trade through the Boy / Girl Scouts of America. Yes, I suppose
that in a very informal society of individuals who know each other very
well, I might jokingly be referred to as a "swabby" by someoe who had
also shared experiences in common with my own. However, in reading the
rules forming Nova Roma, I read a more dignified, serious and polite
approach to the Illustrious Path of Rome.
Perhaps as a newly joined member I have been mistaken, by what I have
read, and perhps this is not a corret assumption. If thus is so, I most
cheerfully submit myself to correction.

Salvete,
My apologies for responding to this thread so late.
I think we're missing a point here by focusing on non-
discrimination. What defines a Nova Roman citizen is not who
their parents were, who they choose to sleep with, where
they live, or anything other than this:
That they feel at home in Roman culture and with Roman
religion, and wish to make our nation their home.
Anything else is secondary and the perogative of the
individual citizen, within reasonable limits. I don't think
that any of us would tolerate, much less smile on,
perpetrators of hate crimes; but I think that we would be
equally loathe to eliminate someone because of their
personal beliefs or politics (in their country or province
of residence). It would seem that doing so would only be
justified on Nova Roman *territory*, in the event that we
were to acquire any. For now, this would include only the
message board, chat room and elist.
With the present chat and message service we're using,
keeping hatemongers off of them would be difficult. I'm not
sure how workable bans would be on a message board -- there
are ones which can be password-protected -- but we might
want to consider setting up a registered IRC channel (with a
java web interface) in order to gain more control over the
chats.

Salve, Most Honorable Romani!!
I agree with the most honorable gentleman and Roman in his statement as
to the requirements for a Nova Roma Citizen. However, on consideration,
I would like to add one additional condition to that statement, and that
is:
"To have the willingness to further Nova Roma in it's Roman Pathway as
the ability of the member permits."
My feeling is that this institution should not only provide a place of
comfort for those folk who have a love for the Roman Way, but each of
those folk should be willing to contribute, as they may, to make Nova
Roma even better, It is the way that Ancient Rome grew, and the way it
fell when it's inhabitants took more from Rome than they put into Rome;
and that they allowed others to work for an institution that they really
did not believe in.

I use the "S" word in a friendly manner and as one who has been there, though
not for as long as you have.

You sound like a person who would be a valuable addition to any group.

Dignified and serious to a degree, we also relax as people do after they have
shared time with each other (as "virtual" as it is).I regret that you might
have taken my comment as an impoliteness. That would be a very unfortunate
beginning of what I hope to be a long and amenable relationship.

Most Honored Romani!
Hmmmmmmm! Looks like I blew that one! My apologies one and all. My
only defence, I suppose, that since I don't get stuffy very often, I
have lost the knack of doing it gracefully.
The Roman Gentleman to whom I have erroniously directed my "stuffy"
response turns out to be the very thing that I described; a gentleman
whose background is similar to my own. How embarassing!
I hope this "fo-pah" will not be held against me. Nova Roma has many
things that seem desirable, but I do need some guidance in finding my
way.
