Hey Dex...you'd like Morocco (where the aformentioned "Maghrebean beauty"
comes from). There is a long tradition of tranvestite male singers and
dancers. I remember seeing one such traditional entertainer on the bus in
Tangier. There he was, mascara, jewels, woman's djellaba...the whole kit!

Best, Pythia

(If you're so inclined, you can set the Latin bit at the end in italic. It
should be right - I cribbed it out of "Latin for People.")

TELA ROMANA (The Roman Web)
by Patricia Cassia

Did you know that the ancient Romans invented the hamburger? Neither did I,
until my esteemed Paterfamilias, M. Cassius Julianus, gleaned this fact
from a cable-TV special on ancient inventions.

Based on the abbreviated recipe delivered on the show, I tried making Roman
hamburgers, and they were delicious! Then I went online and found the REAL
recipe at Micaela Pantke's "Ancient Roman Dishes" page,
<a href="http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/wchuang/cooking/recipes/Roman/Ancient_Roman.html#" target="_top" >http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/wchuang/cooking/recipes/Roman/Ancient_Roman.html#</a>
3.

Actually, this page is a translation of a translation. Pantke translated
the recipes to English from German; Robert Maier crafted them in German
from the originals by Apicius, the best-know Roman food writer.

The page, maintained on William Chuang's site at MIT, includes explanations
of some common Roman food terms and acceptable substitutes for modern
cooks. (One quibble: Pantke appears to believe "Liebstockl" is a Latin
rather than a German term. In any case, she could have just used "lovage,"
the English equivalent.)

The recipes - mostly main dishes, with a couple of desserts - are shown in
a simple, quick-loading text format. The measurements are given in metric
measurements, but a handy table at the top helps Americans convert. They
seem quite easy to cook - once you figure out that "stone-pine kernels" are
what we know as pine nuts or pignolias - and are a nice introduction to
the world of Roman food.

If this makes you want more, there are a few books available to help you
learn more about what the Romans ate. Since my special interest is in Roman
Britain, I started with "Food and Drink in Britain," a survey by C. Anne
Wilson.

Several other writers have crafted recipe books based on Apicius and
others; since I'm nowhere near qualified to judge their historical
accuracy, I'll simply say that after all this looking at recipes, famelicus
ego (I'm hungry)!
