I don't believe so. Quaestors are appointed by the Consuls, or by the
Senate,
to oversee specific tasks. They weren't a voted position as far as I've
ever
seen. (Of course, with MY luck, the Nova Roma Constitution will completely
disprove that...)

Salvete my fellow Nova Romans,

I believe today, October 16, is the correct day to announce ones'
candidacy. I, Avidius Tullius Callidus, paterfamilias of one of the
earlier Plebean gentes to join Nova Roma, am donning the toga candida
(the white candidates' toga) and standing for election to the office
of Tribune of the People.

I urge other Plebeans with some time and effort to spare to consider
standing for some of the various posts in the Nova Roman government.
There are the offices of Tribune of the People and Plebean Aedile
which only Plebeans may hold. There also are the
higher offices of Quaestor, Praetor and Consul to consider standing
for. Please join with me in filling the offices in our Republic, we
have gone without many of them for too long.

I am aware that the office of Plebean Tribune sometimes has a shadowy
reputation and in the last century of the ancient Roman Republic, this
was deservedly the case. However gone are the days of Saturninus,
Clodius, Dolabella and their ilk. I can assure you that my platform
includes no "radical legislation" which lead to so many of the Late
Republic's problems. My stance is one of mediation and moderation, in
my view the Tribune is a liasion between the Senate, the Magistrates
and the Popular Assemblies meeting with all to help develop
legislation that Nova Romans, Patrician and Plebean alike can embrace.
I am aquainted with many of the members of the current government and
am willing to work with them and any newcomers for the benefit of Nova
Roma as a whole. I believe that I have the ability, the knowledge and
the drive to fulfill these obligations to the People of Nova Roma with
the dignity and honor such an office deserves. I hope I can count on
your vote in the near future.

If you have any questions, or would like to correspond with me, please
contact me. You may also be able to
find me in the chat-room as I frequent the Forum/Taverna.

Thank You and Vale!

Salvete citizens of Nova Roma!

I, Antonius Gryllus Graecus, paterfamilias of Gens Gryllia and Praetor ad
Lusitaniam Provinciam appointed by the Senate, announce that I am standing
for election to the office
of Tribune Plebis Novae Romae.

If I am elected, my effort will be centered on keeping Nova Roman
administrative institutions more clear and efficient, so as to make the
people more and more happy with their government. Of great importance too
will be to watch over the lobbies that tend to keep the power always in the
same hands, preventing the legitimate right of any citizen to actively
participate in the political life of the state. I will take these efforts
with no personal interest and with extreme care for the political stability
of Nova Roma, colaborating in good will with the same institutions I will be
invested to watch.... Et si sciens fallo, tum me Dispiter salva urbe arceque
bonis eiciat ut ego hunc lapidem.

Valete omnes!

With all these candidates coming up for elections, we'll definitely need
some lictors!
As the only woman in Rome priveleged to have a lictor, I recommend
the Boys R Us escort service, who replied "Sure, lady, they'll dress up
any way ya want 'em! But ya gotta supply your own rods & axes."
Well, this was rather a setback, as you can imagine. I should think
that for $100 an hour they should come with their OWN rods, even though
that's something I could definitely NOT use. It's simply the principle
of the thing that I resent.

What a well-written announcement! If I werent a patrician, I think that it
would have won my vote.

I just wanted to remind all the candidates to send these to the censors
directly too.

Subject: quaestor candidacy

Since, it turns out, quaestor is an elective rather than appointed post, I
hereby announce my candidacy.

My qualifications: In the months I have served as Quaestor of Nova Roma, I
have established a bank account for the organization and set up a system of
regular fiscal reports to the Senate and to a fellow Quaestor, who also
gets copies of all the relevant documentation so as to check my veracity. I
have also begun the process of getting Nova Roma incorporated as a legal
non-profit organization in the United States, so as to be able to receive
tax-deductible donations. In recent weeks I have taken over management of
the Nova Roma Web site.

It is my humble request that I continue to be allowed to serve Nova Roma.

Based on the feedback here, we'll leave the boot level at 2 people. If
anyone feels this is causing a gross miscarriage of justice, we can always
change it.

I did, however, change the configuration so that the last message on the
board is time-stamped. If you go in there and see, for example, that I
posted six hours ago, it's a good bet that I'm not still there ... ;)

Salvete, omnes!
I just tried to enter the new chat-room, which I've been into
successfully already, but kept on getting an error message, saying
that Beseen could not verify my handle / password combination. I
entered it 3 times, and am dead certain it was right. I even tried
registering a new one, in case something had gone wrong with the old
one, and that didn't work either.
Has anybody else had this problem? Do they know what's going on?
It may be because I am using a different computer to the one I used to
enter the chat-room before - the error message went on to say that I
could mail beseen if I kept getting the same message, and I should
state the type of computer and browser I was using, so it looks like
they recognise this as a potential problem. But I'd like to know
whether it's just me, or a general problem, before I mail beseen for
help.
Vos gratias ago,
Aprica.

Subject: chat issues etc.
From: Masterofhistory masterofhistory@--------
Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 13:26:31 -0700 (PDT)
Salvete omnes,

I see there is some discussion on the chat room questions I posed
earlier. I want to agree with F.Claudia (I think it was you), who
asked who would be so petty as to ignore and boot those with which
they don't happen to agree. Right. I do not know any citizens like
this, but I am only bringing up these concerns because if and when
this sort of thing happens it is too late to start inventing the rules
to govern the chat at that point. I have watched it occure in other
places. That is all I was trying to say and that was why I asked our
magistrates and Senators to consider some sort of rule or garauntee.

I for one think 3 people makes a good number to set as the minimum
requirement to boot from the chat room. I also say right now that I
won't be using ignore function or be asking others to boot people out
of the room (though I may well be one of the three who does the
booting if asked to do so). I sincerely hope that all goes well in
the new chat room and that these functions only be used on the
disturbed persons who get their pleasure by insulting and threatening
others.

Lastly, I would just like to add that this entire issue has put a
great strain upon me. I am an advocate of the freedoms given to us in
the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights. I,
however, have also experienced first hand how such hate mongers can
subvert and corrupt small democratic organizations. On one hand I say
just let these people speak their twisted idologies in front of
everyone and let the good people judge. On the other hand, I ask, why
coddle these fools? One thing I try to do is follow Demosthenes'
advice and I paraphrase; Don't enter a contest in which the winner
will appear to be worse than the loser. I suppose that works here.

Respectfully,
Avidius Tullius Qf Callidus, Praedans
Paterfamilias, gens Tullia

Salvete omnes, and Lady Aprica in particular:

I have had the exact same problem with the chat room--I can access it
just fine from work using my customary handle and password, but when I
try it from my home computer I get the error. This even after
performing the same gyrations (changing password, changing handle,
registering new handles from various parts of the script)...

I have already written help@-------- and am awaiting their
response. This should be good--I did tech support for an Internet
provider for a year before taking my present job, so when *I* wire tech
support it's gotta be a doozy.

So, no, Claudia Aprica, you are not going crazy and you're not the only
one experiencing this. As soon as I get a response to my query I will
forward it to the List, you betcha!

Yours until snow falls upwards...
