Salve --

I am now on a quest to find some stories I can read the children with a
Roman theme (something explaining holidays like the Saturnalia perhaps,
or maybe funny stories about the Gods and their antics). Would anyone
know where I could find any? Do they even exist?

Also, there was a discussion about Roman music a while back. What's it
like? Is it a specality item (in other words, impossible to find IRL)?

Salve!

It was me who initiated the discussion on ancient Greek/Roman music.
I've recently bought a record form Amiata Records, called:
Music from ancient Rome - Vol. I, by SYNAULIA.
SYNAULIA is a musical consort dedicated to music history and archeology. You
can find it on Music Boulevard: www.musicboulevard.com I think... Take a
look in the Classical music section.

I have other CDs with Greek music. Some are a little hard for a child to
like it, but others really correspond to our stereotype of pagan religious
and banquet music. Nevertheless these records are harder to find in the US.
I can give you the references if you want.

Before the voting's even started? I don't think so. Besides, Plebians don't
listen to anything Patricians have to say about the Tribune of the Plebs'
elections.
You candidates haven't even started the traditional "bribing of the voters" yet!

Slavic languages (Russian, Ukrainian, polish, Bulgarian, Serbian,
Slovenian, etc.) are Indo European. There are various theries about which
language family Etruscan belongs to, though the general opinion is that it
is not Indo European.

By all means, test "SYNAULIA" out at the library before going and out and
paying for a copy! I personally was really dissapointed with the album. The
group did a wonderful job in re-creating authentic Roman musical instruments
but worked on a rather dissapointing premise... since there is little or no
Roman musical notation left from ancient times, they did not try to write or
play "music". They just made random noises with these ancient instruments, all
the pieces on the album seemed to me to be rhythmic discordant noise. There
was no melody in any piece on the album!

This sort of "freeform" playing is actually a VERY modern concept... ancient
people made music to be musical rather than "artistic". It's almost assured
that the ancient Romans would have played simple pieces you could whistle or
sing to rather than something that sounds like an orchestra tuning up. :(

Anyway, I found it interesting, but impossible to listen to for any length of
time. I certainly didn't find it worth the $20 I paid for the CD...

This is about the Eagle? Right?
Might it not be easier, and more sensible, if Grylus Graecus subscribed through

His remittence would not have to travel as far, and he could get it sooner.
Non?

$20!!!!! sigh....perhaps I can find it in the library and, um,
'recreate' it if I like it. But it doesn't sound like I'm gonna like it.
Terry on the other hand....

Subject: Roman Halloween

Found this little tidbit in a 'ladies' magazine...They could have
spelled the name of the Goddess Pomona correctly, but otherwise...

"THE ROMAN CONTRIBUTION
Some of our contemporary Halloween customs come from the Roman Empire.
A festival honoring the goddess of fruit, Pamona, was held near Ostia
around November 1. Offerings of newly harvested nuts and apples were
made to Pamona and to the gods of fire and water who helped crops grow.
This custom intermingled with the Celtic festival after the Romans
conquered Britain."

So when you're handing out treats to those little kids, do it for
Pomona!

The Nova Roma post office box problem seems to be solved. Mail was received
from Palladius and Savo. Please feel free to continue to send mail there,
and let Cassius or me know if there's a problem.
