Salve!

I agree with Cassius' opinion. Just buy it if you want to have a perspective
on Roman blow instruments. In order to listen to music, it's better to buy
the greek music albums, which include the only excerpt of Roman music from
Terence.

Vale!

Subject: Annoucement of the Candidacy of Marcus Minucius Audens for Quaestor
From: jmath669642reng@--------)
Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 11:11:04 -0500 (EST)
Salve Honored Romans!

This message is to announce the Candidacy of Marcus Minucius Audens for
the position of Quaestor being vacated by Lucius Cornelius Sulla.

My interest in Rome, has been a long one, since reading about the Roman
Legions as a young man in the 1950's. I currently am a member of the
XXth Legio Valera Victrix, 1st Chortes, 1st Centurio as a Miles Immunes
(Gromaciti, Agrimmensores, Architechturas, and Gubernator), I am also
Optio of Engineering as an associate member of the IXth Legio Hispana.
Some of the Nova Romans may have read the Letters of Eumenes Thalian
Diomedes, (M. Audens) which I hope will be picked in some manner here in
Nova Roma.

I served in the United States Submarine Force for 20 years entering
service as a Seaman Recruit and leaving the service as a Chief Warrant
Officer (Underwater Ordnace), Command Duty Officer and Officer of the
Deck Underway. I have completed 20 years in the Submarine Building
business as a Senior Engineering Program Co-Ordinator and Quality
Assurance Specialist. I presently have my own business (Adjutant's
Post) and am a partner in a second business (Belle Studios).

I have been involved in volunteer work (Boy Scouts Of America) man and
boy for 38 years, I have served in various leadership positions and hold
the Silver Beaver Award. I have served as the Chairman of the Zoning
Board of Appeals in my town for 16 years.

I am a 1st Person Re-enactor in Civil War, Rev War, F& I War, and Roman
1st Century, and belong to six re-enactment units.

My Candidacy for this position of Quaestor is my way of doing my share
to make Nova Roma a place where Roman values and Roman culture can be
studied and enjoyed by all who are interested, meeting people of like
interests, and in sharing with the Nova Romans some of my interests.

It will be difficult to come up to the standards of the gentleman whose
shoes I am applying to fill, but I will do my best, and with your vote
and support fellow Nova Romans, I feel that I can help to retain what we
now have, and to investigate how we may further the cause and
institution to which we all belong.

Thank you most kindly for your attention, and I most humbly ask for your
support in the coming election.

Vale Honored Romans!

Ave macte Graecus!

Please keep in mind that this note is neither hostile nor
disrespectful. Its faults may be attributed to my wanting to get
out about the day and old brain damage from fighting Clodius's
hooligans. =({;-)
Also please take note that I am of the Patrician order. My
interest in this part the elections is rooted in my wanting Nova
Roma to grow strong and healthy and mature (over time, lets not
rush things [vbeg]).
I am not making these comments as a spectator at the arena might
egg on the combatants down on the sand.
I'm not making any any endorsements, nor any ex-dorsements. I'm
just making some observations and comments.

You and Avidius Tullius Callidus are both assuming that Quintus
Caecillius Metellus is going to win the election for Tribune of
the Plebs. The reasons are, I guess, that he has the backing of
"the Patricians", also because he is one of
"the Founders". [trumpet salute without]

Don't be so pessimistic. True, those who vote are such a small
number that five votes might make a voting block, but all the
plebeians, except Metellus, came into NRoma some time after the
first trimester. They might well have the same view as you and
Avidius do of a Tribune of the Plebs candidate being endorsed by
some patricians. This is probably just as likely as them being
wowed by endorsements from that other order.

Tactically, you and Avidius Tullius might do well to work
together more. Unless there is some reason not to. I've seen
posts from the two of you on the list more than I have from
Metellus. You know, that old "name recognition" thing. Another
tactical point, information item here... After the last large
vote, the one on the bundle of Constitution changes, then censor
Flavius Vedius Germanicus told us that about one third (1/3) of
the electorate actually voted. That was ca. 30 people at that
time. Of course that vote was by individual citizens, I am not
clear whether this one will be that way, or by tribal
representatives [IMO a dumb way to go].

I'll pipe down now. I'm sure I've said more than a decadent
oppressor of the proletariat ought to about the business noble
Plebeian Order. But, hey... It is all necessary to the survival
of Nova Roma. Remember the stomach and the limbs.

Ave Roma Immortalis.

Vale.

Caius Aelius Ericius

Salvete, omnes...

OK. For the benefit of those of us who can't keep track of the players
without a scorecard, can someone put together a list or chart of who's
running for what offices which are currently occupied by whom?

How many candidates may we vote for for each office? (Are we electing
one Praetor Urbanus or two? ...stuff like that)

If this list also includes vacant posts needing to be filled, it could
even attract some more candidates!

Subject: Roman banquet in Britannia
From: Claudia Aprica quinta_claudia_lucentia_aprica@--------
Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 10:02:54 -0800 (PST)
Salvete, Quirites!
I am pleased to be able to announce that the Gens Claudia
Lucentia will be hosting a Roman banquet in Oxford, Britannia, on
Saturday November 21st, using recipes from the 1st century cook,
Marcus Gavius Apicius.
Although I realise the majority of people on this list won't be
able to come, I'm doing a general post anyway, just in case there are
any British Nova Romans I don't know about.
We intend to finance the banquet by splitting the cost of the
food between participants - on the basis of previous experiments, we
have found that a contribution of 15 pounds sterling per person should
cover everything nicely. This, of course, means that it is important
to let us know if you will be attending the banquet in advance, so
that we can plan our budget and the quantities of food accurately. We
will be serving up at around 8:00pm, although guests are welcome to
arrive earlier if they want to watch / participate in the cooking
process!
The aim of the banquet is to give British Nova Romans a chance to
get together and meet each other, and also to let me, your governor,
know what events you would like to see happening in Britannia in the
future.
The address at which the banquet will be held is:
Flat D3,
Merifield Building,
Ferry Pool Rd.,
Summertown,
Oxford,
OX2 7DU.
Precise directions can be got by contacting me, preferably including
the direction from which you will be approaching Oxford. Some very
rudimentary accommodation may be available (i.e. sleeping-bags on
people's floors) - please ask if you need it. Please also let us know
if you have any special dietary requirement (e.g. vegetarian).
I will look forward to seeing as many British Nova Romans as
possible in November!
Multas felicitates,
Q. Claudia Lucentia Aprica.

Waaaahhhhh! I wanna go! Is this going to be one of those comfy reclining

Salvete, quirites!
Yahoo!, in their infinite wisdom, have just seen fit to wipe my
e-mail address book for no immediately apparent reason. This means
that I now have _nobody's address_ at all, and have to start again
from scratch (Yahoo! will be hearing about this, incidentally).
I could go to the gentes page, and copy everybody's addresses
down onto a bit of paper, and then type them individually into my
address book. However, if anyone out there is feeling kind, it would
make the job of reconstituting my book a lot quicker if people could
mail me, preferably putting their full Nova Roman name in the text of
their message (you don't need to put anything else - I'll know what
it's about), and I can then add them automatically to my new book. I
like to have as many Nova Romans' addresses as possible, so this
invitation is open to anyone who's happy for me to have their address!
Sorry to be a pain, everyone, but I had 54 addresses in all, and
I can't tell you how annoyed I am about this!
Vos magnas gratias ago,
Q. Claudia Lucentia Aprica

We thought about this long and hard, but realised we had no
appropriate couches, or indeed tables of the right height, so we've
resigned ourselves pretty much to ordinary chairs, unless we have some
last-minute brainwave...

I think the slaves' names will be Q. Claudia Lucentia Aprica, M.

I'm encouraging people to come in Roman dress (myself and Pavo will be

I was talking last night in the chat room with L. Marius Fimbria, and
she gave me this idea;

Would you be amenable to my donating a subscription of the "Eagle" to
Amythyst Crystal? It must not be known by anyone else, that I am making
this donation. If you agree, I will send the subscription money you
and then I would like you to announce on the Internet that Nova Roma has
decided to make her and her family a gift of the subcription for
whatever reason (You are the Consul, think up something good).

My reason for this, is that I have a hunch that it is a thing for me to

In accordance with instructions received from the Honored Consul M.

In order to start the Sodalicum off properly, I intend to rely upon the

permission be granted, and to discuss references and projects whch can
be undertken by interested Nova Romans. The results of these messages
references and products will be recorded in a Sodalicum Notebook, with
pictures and text. Modeling will be encouraged, as will writing papers.
thesis' and doing research into the Civil / Military Architechture that
graced Rome during the Republic and the early Empire.

In addition to the above, the Sodalicum will attempt to organize the
Roman Army within the Nova Roma to the satisfaction of the members of
this institution. I believe that a minimal Consul's Guard should at
least be attempted, together with the Civil / Military Engineering
aspects and Mapping of the Republic / Empire.

Okay, since you let the cat out of the bag...!

I just wanted to say that the people I've met here in Nova Roma are some of the
nicest people I've ever met. Audens was not the only Citizen to make this offer.
This shows a concern and comradeship among the Nova Romans that is astounding,
considering most of us have never met face to face. If we had any doubt about the
Roman Virtues becoming extinct, I don't think we have to worry about it as long as
people like these are around -- that particular flame is inextinguishable.

We Romans sure stick together, huh?

Salvete dearest Romans!!!!!

I have been touched by the kindness, generosity, good humor, empathy and
on and on that I have experienced within this group. Our lot has not
been easy and I had all but given up on human beings being anything but
the cold cruel creatures I have encountered lately (especially this
summer). I have found myself to be quite wrong, at least about this
bunch. You have supported me through my rough times AFTER the rough
time. You have made me feel a part of this little family and reminded me
that I do have things to contribute in times when I still, occasionally,
think little of myself. You have made me, who vowed never to love anyone
except my children into my life, love again. You have helped in my
healing, and I hardly know what to think of it. I have been very simply
shocked by the generosity and kindness of the people on this list, and
more than once found myself in tears reading the posts and seeing the
love and generosity of the people posting to me, publicly and privately.
I have (as the abused mind tends to do when confronted by goodness) tried
to figure out what you want from me, as you must want SOMETHING!! No one
is this nice without wanting something, right?? Well, I can't think of
one single thing that you want from me or my little brood. And I cannot
think of one thing I could do to thank or repay. All I can do is to say
thank you, and that seems little enough.

Thank you all for restoring my faith, my life and giving me love.

Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 14:10:37 -0800 (PST)

Salvete Ericius et omnes,

Thank you Ericius for your posting regarding the Tribunician election.
In response to you, the Praetor of California, I just have to ask
one thing: Where did you get the idea Antonius and I thought we were
going to lose the election? There are afterall, two Tribune offices.
I have never even hinted at the prospect that I was losing this
election. On the contrary, I believe I stand a good chance of winning
one of the positions. Also, I believe my total postings on the
election subject, counting this one, come to the massive total of three
(3). Honestly sir, I am touched by your concerns for Antonius and
myself, but I think they are unwarranted.

Also, I want it known that I am in this contest to the bitter end -
win or lose. In the initial announcement of my campaign, I told the
people of Nova Roma that I had the abilities, the drive and the
dignity to stand for and serve as Tribune of the People. Nothing has
changed that. In addition, I look forward to working with any of the
candidates, my colleagues/rivals for the office of Tribune or
otherwise, in bringing issues and concerns citizens have about Nova
Roma into the election discussions. To Plebeans and Patricians both,
I say this is a good time to voice your thoughts on Nova Roma. As
candidates, it is our obligation to learn and to know what the
population of Nova Roma wants to see done in the coming year. So I
extend an open hand and an invitation to my colleagues Antonius
Gryllus Graecus and Caecilius Metellus; we are at the center of the
real contest in these Nova Roman elections so far and we have a unique
opportunity to demonstrate how an election can bring out the best in
Nova Roma. We can show this young Republic the dedication, the
devotion and the drive the Plebean gentes possess. I believe we can
take these elections and Nova Roma as a whole, to a new level of
community, communication and confidence.

Oh there is something that we want from you alright! We want you up on
the same step as we are. We want you, to be funny when you wish to be,
and we want you to be outrageous when you want to be. We want you WITH
us and no-one can do that unless they are accepted by their peers

Oh yeah, we expect a lot from you, a big smile, your kids falling over

Yes, our expectations are the highest for you and yours, and I guess
from what I hear, we are going to get what we want. At least I hope so!

OPne. I am writing as a citizen of Nova Roma. Not as Praetor, or any other
office. You can get a hint from how I sign my name. It was in that sense
that I wrote my initial post.

Where? Why from the various posts and comments in the chat room where one
or the other of you have said that Metellus had won. Here is one quote:

Good. It is about time you started to work for the post you are standing

If you all want to be involved in a centurio, my friend, than I guess we
better all start doing some "heavy-duty" recruiting. Besides someone

Why thank-you Dex! Here the other forty-two messages which reminded me
that I screwed up I was just sure were a prelude to you pointing that
fact out, but I never gave up hope that you would wake up at last and
read the embarrassing news.

Actually I didn't know that you have to have some sort of pass word to
send something to the Consul without passing through the Nova Roma List.

But as I have already been told once today,"A good carpenter doesn't

Well, now, not at all strange, if you'd like to know. One of my
favorite, alebit modern, military hero's, Gen. H.R.N. MacIver, a
'filibuster' of considerable reputation from the last century, once took
