You bet I would! However, it's not exactly a general-interest book. It's
called "The Salem Witches' Book of Love Spells" and some of it is pretty
funny, actually. I believe in humor for subjects like this. But it also has
some beautiful spells and rituals contributed by Patricia Cassia and our
esteemed senior Consul. It's not just spells for romantic love, but also love,
understanding, and tolerance between friends, siblings, parents, in-laws (!)
and others.

I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I am curious:
In the chat room and in some E-Mail Messages personages use abbreviated
letters like LOL and other capitol letters. I sthere a table of
abbreviations or some such that I can look atto decifer som of these?
Also some people use characters like =) to emphasize a phrase.
Apparently these have some meaning, but I don't understand them. I
would appreciate any help that you could provide.

Dear Lady;
Since we are forbidden by our Constitution to take land / property
by force of arms, our only avenue is to create perhaps a Consuls Guard,
and begin working on an Urban Cohortes. When and if my Sodalicum is
approved, I would very much like you to be a part of it.
Your earlier statement, "that you knew nothing of the military", I
believe should be modified at least to the extant that there are those
in Nova Roma who wish the process of re-organizing the Military is the
wish of a significant portion of our active membership.
The study and development of Military and Civil architechture,
which provided many of the ameties of the citizens of Rome is also I
believe important. There have been some comments which suggest a study
of Naval Vessels and the development (if only in a set of models) a
significant Naval Force within Nova Roma (perhaps a gaming table devoted
to classical period warships in conflict).
These are only a few ideas which might come to fruitation in this
proposed effort, and I invite you (and your children) to be a part of
this study, as you may, in the coming months.

These are called smileys or emoticons. They help clarify the facial
expression you would have if you were talking face to face, 'cause on the net
all we have are fonts, not voice tones. It can sometimes prevent flame wars
(where people get mad at each other because they mis-emphasized the words).
And it can make people laugh. Emoticons are a GOOD THING. 8-) , if you look
at it sideways, is a person wearing glasses and smiling. 8-( is one frowning,
8-p is one sticking it's tongue out.
There are lots more. You can do keyword searches under the words 'smiley' or
'emoticon' to find sites with listings of them.
As for the abbreviations - many of them seem to belong to specific mailing
lists, but there are some that are just too general, like LOL, which means
'laughing out loud" ROFL = Rolling on the floor laughing, ROFLMAO = Rollling
on the floor laugh my Arse off, IMHO = In my humble opinion, IMNSHO - In my
not so humble opinion.....Sometimes you just have to ask.
Then there are the more complicated ones: >^.^< is a cat face, __() is a
marshmallow, [_]) is a cup of coffee or hot cocoa, (_)? is a cup of tea,
\@@/ is a bowl of popcorn..... and so forth.

I was just kidding Graecus when I made fun of his latest campaign slogan,
but, it does point out a problem for Nova Roma: we are from many different
countries and speak different languages. English is a big international
language at this time, and the U.S. would seem to have the majority of
Novaromani, and so we communicate in English here, in the chat room and on
the message board.
Well, this is a cosy situation for me, because I am a native speaker of
English. But what about those of us who arent? Perhaps before I came into
Nova Roma there were discussions about instituting Latin as our common
language in the Forum. If so, I would suppose that the idea was dismissed
because few nowadays use Latin in any way shape or form, and it's therefore
a good bet that not a single one of us is fluent in it (if there is such a
Latin speaker among us, I'm afraid already).
What if we looked at this issue from a long-term perspective; since we are
building Nova Roma to last for a long time, perhaps we could begin a plan to
point cives toward Latin language resources and facilitate Latin study for
all of us, with the goal of 'switching' to Latin in the Forum by the year
2761 AUC or some other target year?
I think that a move like this may be feasible, since we could support each
other's efforts and practice together. It would be difficult, and we would
all be making mistakes left and right. But, in that respect all of us would
experience something similar to what non-native English speakers already do.

The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked. The little
punctuation marks you see at the ends of some sentences are called
emoticons or smilies; you tip your head`sideways to see them as faces:
:-) smiling
;-) winking
8-) dazed but happy
...and countless others, including my Roman Legionary:

These smileys help make up for the fact that you can't see people's
faces when you talk to them on the 'Net, so it's hard to tell whether a
seemingly-sharp remark was made in earnest or in jest. Do a 'Net
search for 'Smiley Dictionary' (there are several) if you want to see
further examples.
As to the acronyms, our own Claudia Lucentia Aprica has a guide to
common chat-room acronyms, their meanings, AND their Latin equivalents
(!!) on her gens Web site:

LOL is "laughing out loud", as opposed to ROFL, which is "rolling on the

The emoticons, such as :-) are representations of facial expressions
viewed by (mentally or physically) inclining your head to the left to
view them.
:-) smile
;-) wink
:-( frown
There are others, but those are the three that come to mind (and are
easiest to interpret).
It all serves to add a little affect to communication that is otherwise
almost totally devoid of any emotional cues (other than SHOUTING, of
course).

Receiving it was a pleasant surprise on a dreary day. I was resting on

find a sturdy substitute -- where ARE my bearers??????)?

I wholeheartedly agree that one day we should be speaking Latin.
There are problems with your method though Merullus.
If we set a date for the transition it would be fine for us existing
cives; we'd have lots of time to prepare but what of newer cives? And
cives to be?
If a person became a citizen, say a week before the switch, they'd be
really isolated!
If we are going to go for a common language, well Cantonese is the
most widely spoken language in the world!!!
I think that, yes, we should try to incorporate as much Latin as
possible, and I'd love to see it become our primary language but it
will be hard as I know for a fact that there are many cives who can't
speak Latin, myself being one of them.
I think that we should gently bring it in not have a sudden switch of
language which would cause more problems than it would solve.
