You were right, the word is of Latin origin. gentilis-of the same clan and
gens- a clan itself.

How the word came to take on the Judeo-Christian connotation referred to,
"unclean" or a non-Jew, I do not know. I would imagine that the xitians
fom Paul on, who preached mostly to non-Jews (gentiles as they came to be
known) used the term themselves.

They're going to be another day or so, Graecus! I started the vote counting
process yesterday evening, which requred going through ALL my old mail to make
sure nobody had gotten lost or was still missing a voter code.

All the information is now together. I still have to do the "official" tally,
which I won't be able to do until after work this evening.

This leaves a fairly major question for the list... would you folks like me to
make an announcement right away, or wait for my count to be verified by a
couple extra people to eliminate ALL possibility of error? That verification
would mean yet another delay, but with all the problems and threats that
ensued during the election itself, it might well be worth it for everyone's
peace of mind.

Subject: The Doctors Visit (Part 2)
From: Mater2Two@--------
Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 12:38:38 EST
Salvete --

Well, a day has past and Lapis is still doing fne. The ultrasound revealed
that he weighs about 3.8 pounds, which they say is a smidge big for now, but
nothing to worry about. He is expected to gain half a pound a week from now
until the end, which will most likely be about 9 weeks. That would put him in
the neighborhood of 8 pounds (Terry was 6 pounds). I, on the other hand, have
gone up to 150 (which compared to Terry is hardly anything). Terry tried to
get on the scale with me (little stinker) which would have had me topping the
scales at 170 and my doctor wondering how I gained 20 pounds in two weeks. I
gotta keep an eye on her!! <G>

It seems my cervix is thinner than it really ought to be. The doctor is a bit
concerned that the Braxton Hicks contractions may thin out my cervix, which
can be a problem (I guess). I am supposed to come back now every 2 weeks and
if I have any problems with contractions that won't go away, I am to go into
the clinic or the ER and they will plug me into a machine for a couple of
hours and see what is going on. I had a night about a week ago where the
contractions seemed to be coming often, but I didn't go into the hospital,
even though I probably should have. Scared I guess. That and nowhere to put
Terry (although I suppose if I put it off long enough in the evening, she'd
sleep through an ambulance ride and 2 hours of mom hooked up to a moniter).

SOOOOOOOO dear citizens, we are fine and dandy.

Tune in in 2 weeks for further updates!!!

Strenuus Salus et Bonum Fortuna Omnes, Salvete!

Awhile ago there was a discussion about vinegar on the list. There was,
I recall, a question raised about the use of vinegar in beverages.

I would like to present a medieval recipe I unearthed. The beverage is
called 'Switchel'.
It is useful on hot days for replacing fluids, sugars and electrlytes.
A kind of 'Dark Ages Gatorade'. Drink a cup of Switchel, then drink
plain water to thoroughly replace fluid loss.

To 1 quart of good tasting water add 1 tsp. of salt, 1 cup of cider,
malt or red wine vinegar and 1/2 cup of honey, shake to dissolve
thoroughly.

You may need to dilute the Switchel to make it more palatable, but it is
a good hot weather refresher.

That is very interesting because in Malta (when the Royal British Navy
was there) the drink to drink after physical exertion was called
"Switchel" as well. The recipe for this version was a little simpler:
One ice cold bottle of very light pilsner beer, and an ice cold botte of
7-Up mixed together and drunk straight down. Now I am not much of a
beer drinker (perferring a strong "Falernian" or iced Champagne) but the
drink is very refreshing and provides a good basis for a "hot" Curry
supper with at least 20 side dishes, so popular in Malta at the homs of
the British families..

Now that is a culinary delight!! If you like more of a selecton the
Jakarta Riestaffel (Rice Table) is also a feast for the sight and
senses.

My passions are religion and languages-- I was a foreign language
major before I dropped out of college [due to having babies], and I
have spent a lot of time looking at religion. I am interested in
culture(s) in general. I don't know too much Latin yet, but I hope to
fix that-- only dabbled at it so far. I also don't know too much about
religion in the Classical world-- in fact, I found the Nova Roma site
while investigating reconstructionist Pagan religions. I was pretty
interested to see something about Rome, since that has been
interesting to me since I was a little kid reading Greek & Roman
mythology.

It seems like an interesting group of people here, and I am enjoying
the list (and the chats) very much, even when I don't really
understand exactly what's going on. :)

Aside from that, I love animals and have a lot of pets. I had
considered getting dormice as pets, but hadn't really considered them
a food item before I subscribed to this list. ;)

giggle... I know I am going to be there in a couple of months... I
have vague rememberance of moaning, "Is it over yet?" for the last
couple of months, and the last baby was over 2 weeks late... :)

Thanks. :) Not yet... Gotta think up a good name and try to decide
whether or not to start a gens, which would require more appropriate
name-picking... As it stands, I can't even think up a name for the new
baby, much less myself. Or, at least, I can't find one my husband
approves of... He shot down "Juan Valdez Soderquist" and I don't think
Cassius Soderquistius is gonna go anywhere either. <LOL>
But seriously, I will probably apply for citizenship soon so that I at

Salve Lucius Marconius Romanus,

I understand your concern regarding the recent posts on the
list....However, one, we are all adults. 2) nothing really explict has
really been discussed. 3) you have the ulitmate control by just
deleteing the mail if you find it personally offensive. Many of the
individuals who have contributed to the psuedo-sexual jokes do
contribute to meaningful ideas to the various debates that we have
constantly going on in the Mailing Lists. Remember....you are an adult,
if you dont like it...delete it..no one forces you to read it.

As for imposing your own values and norms on the mailing list...if you
attempt to do that..you wont have very many friends....so please.
Dont, attempt it..or you will be very disenchanted with your experience
with NR. And, I dont want that to happen to anyone. Just look at this
period of humor and levity as a calm before the next "crisis"
essentially. And, then when you see us throwing mud on each
other..remember this time as a good time, not a degrading, morally
decrept, godless period.

Ok, I am off my Soapbox now. :)
