Salvete!

If these messages are meant to be funny-- I failed to see the joke. But
if these messages are sincere than I honestly feel that Nova Roma should
have a separate mailing list & chat room for the sexual deviants and other
potential trouble makers. At least than 'we' could keep tabs as to were they
were, and at the same time keep the NORMAL mailing list open for meaningful
and descent dialogue.
Since the Gods are not setting any noticeable moral standards for the
citizens, unless they are acting indiscreetly, and what appears to be a lack
of interest amongst the general citizenry-- I have decided, with the help of
the divine logos, to add by distaste in these vial acts, and by doing so I
hope, with the help of others, to rid Nova Roma of the filth, perverted,
amoral, anti-community and loathsome creatures that might, and in all
probability will, harm the great intentions that the good citizens hope to
achieve.

Valete!

I don't think of my Gods as debauched and perverted. There are many
stories told from many viewpoints
depending upon the religious (or lack of) motivations of the story
teller. Personally I look to Hesiod, and Aesop for guidance as too the
nature of the Gods.

Subject: STATEMENT OF ANTONIUS GRYLLUS ON THE ELECTION RESULTS
From: "Antonio Grilo" amg@--------
Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 11:01:14 -0000
Salvete omnes!

The election results were both a defeat and a victory for me.

Firstly I'd like to thank all those who supported me during the campaign and
those who voted me. All of us will now respect and accept the people's
decision.

Secondly, I'd like to give my congratulation to all elected candidates, and
specially to my rival Tribune candidates Avidius Tullius Callidus and
Quintus Caecilius Metellus. I also give my congratulations to the newly
elected Consuls Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus and Decius Iunius Palladius. And
I wish the Gods to guide the new magistrates with their government during
the next year.

Although these results were a defeat of my ideas, I feel victorious for
having provided (in Roman fashion I think) the people of Nova Roma an
opportunity to choose. And I think that I helped creating that
differentiation which turns election results more clear as to the will of
the people.

As to the low results as Plebeian Aedile, I think they are a negative
reaction towards my campaign as Tribune of the Plebs. As such I will accept
being Plebeian Aedile of Nova Roma unless negative reaction is strongly
manifested, in which case I shall peacefully resign my office.

I hope you don't mind my replying to this publically, Graecus, but your votes
for Plebian Aedile were NOT low. Quite the reverse. Remember that only a
segment of the 53 voters were allowed to vote in the Plebian Aedile race.
Statistically you did better in the Aedile vote than anyone did in the Tribune
of the Plebs vote.

You seemed to have interesting ideas for the Aedileship, and I hope that now
the "campaign stuff" is over I'm sure you'll settle into the office position

Graecus! That's not true! There was a low vote for Plebeian Aedile
because there aren't that many Plebs and the voter turnout was low in
the first place. The highest votes for Trib Pleb was only 18 or 19.
Apparently people thought you'd make a good Pleb Aedile. This happens
when you run for more than one office. You'll make a good Plebeian
Aedile and you've proven yourself willing to speak up and to put
yourself forth as a candidate. I don't understand why you're
disappointed -- you got a very good percentage of votes for Pleb Aedile
and even managed to get 10 more for Trib Pleb. Don't you WANT the
office? Do you think it isn't as important as Trib Pleb?

Subject: Terrys Saturnalia (The Beginning)
From: Mater2Two@--------
Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 11:25:49 EST
Salvete Romans and Parents,

You'll have to forgive me, but this is really the first Saturnalia that I have
either *cared* about or been allowed to do what I wanted for the Saturnalia
(last year Terry and I were living with my mother, who didn't allow me to have
a Saturnalia and previous years I really didn't care about anything) and so I
am just so excited I am probably going to go nuts and share every minute of
the next week with you all. OK....I'll just basically share this morning and
try not to give the gory details of the next 7 days <G>.

Last night I got things ready for this first Saturnalia morning. I gave the
house special attention in cleaning (which Lapis didn't appreciate one bit,
kicking me until 3am -- guess I overdid it again -- there's a shock) and went
into the kids (I think of it as 'their' room, even though Lapis will not be
born until February and both of them will be sleeping with me, for a while
anyway) playroom closet to pick out the gift she would get this morniing. I
decided on her dry erase board and markers from me and the puzzle book my
mother sent for her (my mom and I get along much better now that we don't live
together, and she agreed that since she went nuts with Christmas presents, I
could give Terry one or two during the course of Saturnalia, so she wouldn't
be overwhelmed come December 25th -- I already took the nice 'mixed' doll and
set it aside for February so Terry will have her own baby when I bring home
*our* baby -- they don't have interracial dollies here).

I put the board and the markers out, kept the puzzle book apart, so she
wouldn't get overwhelmed and tried to sleep. Terry woke me at 8:00 with her
usual happy talk and demands for juice. She got out of bed and drank and
wandered into the living room, where she discovered her present. She drew on
the board and herself (I showed her how to draw on the board, she showed
herself the other) while I got showered and dressed (I only got one marker
thrown into the shower with me <G>). I brought out the puzzle book, and
showed her how it worked. She is having the time of her little life!!!, which
is all the gift I could ever want!!

Me? I am celebrating with gormet coffee every morning (Hazelnut), and
endulging in Venators Mulling (which Terry loves -- it's great cold as well as
hot) and all manner of little treats. YES, I'm gonna share with Terry (like
she'd let me be selfish <G>), but she ain't gettin my coffee!!!! I think that
would make her entirely too happy and I'm too short to peel her off of the
cieling <G>.

Breakfast was eggs (I thought it appropriate), and I will try to find neat
things to put in them all week.

I am not holding my breath waiting for the promised holiday money from Terrys
father (I have this thing against suffocation....sue me). *I* have guaranteed
my Terry a wonderful Saturnalia season and that is all that matters! I'm so
glad this is working out!! Terrys year has been so difficult, it was somehow
important I give her a very special Saturnalia. We aren't rich, but I wanted
*her* to feel rich, if only for one week. She feels loved every day, I make
sure of it!

Thanks for letting me share and vent. Tomorrow we visit the seniors at the
Senior Center and I'll probably share that. I won't harrass the lists with
the details of Terrys Saturnalia, but I just *had* to share this first day.
Anytime I manage to get all choked up by 'these good tears', I feel the need
to share the wealth.

Bona Saturnalia (or is it Io??)

Crys (one very happy mommy, if only for this week)

Greetings fellow Nova Romans:

I have been much taken up by the events of the last two days and the
Election Results were somewhat of a surprise to me. I thought the
confirmation might take a little longer.

I must make some sincere thankyous for this victory and surprising
success. I wish to thank all present officers of Nova Roma for their
extremely kind acceptance and assistance in the three monhs since I
became a member of the organization. Most especially to the Senior
Consul who has guided me, and in in the midst of his busiest period has
found the time to answer questions and advise me in a variety of areas.

I wish also to thank those among you who disagree with me in some
things, in that through your insights I continue to grow. We can agree
to disagree and that to my thinking is a reall step forward.

My fellow candidates to which I also extend my hand in friendship and
pledge my assistance in whatever way I may be of Service. Special thank
you to my very good friend Venator who has shared many philsophies over
a virtual pitcher of Falaernian ( I am waiting in rapt anticipation of
the real thing!!!) and to Sulla who has discussed freely with me his
political ideas to this novice (much appreciated my friend).

I, like my fellow candidate Venator, will contine to lobby for an
organization of a sodalicum, in my case a military one for the study of
the Republican and Empire Roman Forces in history, and continue my
efforts in planning and executing a web site for the sale of items
relating to military archetechture and topography. Meanwhile I continue
my studies in Roman Engineering, Politics and Religion, of which your
list comments are a large segment.

Lastly to my constituents who have supported me with your votes and
encouragements, I salute you!!! I am in no little way extremely
impressed by your acceptance as both a newcomber and as a student of
Roman ways. I pledge to you a willing ear and a forwarding voice to
your concerns. I cannot guarantee the ultimate desired disposition, of
course, but I can and do guarantee that you will have my ear and voice
at your demand, and a record of the administration of that demand at
your fingertips, so to speak. I thank you all for your support and for
your kind words and most of all for your faith in me to do what is best
for you and for Nova Roma

I thank you for your patience and attention to this rather long but most
sincere list of appreciation and thankyous.

I wish you all the various joys of your Saturnalia and extend to you my
very best wishes and hopes for all of you in this Joyous Season now upon
us!!!

Your Most Humble and Obedient Servant;

Marcus Minuccius Audens

Subject: Tree in the house/Yule/Saturnalia...
From: Mia Soderquist tuozine@--------
Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 12:24:34 -0800 (PST)
It may be a little tacky, but there's not a bit of wood in our tree...
It's all plastic and metal. I figure if it lasts as long as the tree
my parents had when I was growing up (about 20 years), then the
overall environmental impact is pretty minute, and I will have avoided
20 years of cleaning up pine needles and feeling bad for having wasted
a perfectly good tree that was perfectly happy on the Christmas tree
farm.

We've decorated everything in red and gold, since we pretty much
celebrate this as a strictly and directly solar holiday. We have a
gold star at the top of our tree-wannabe, but we reason that the sun
is, after all, a star, and it was a good $5 cheaper than the
sunburst-style tree topper. It all seems to fit nicely into the
Saturnalia theme too, according to what I have read on this list,
which is a good thing.

My husband is all in favor of getting some wine and starting
Saturnalia out on the right foot... I am more in favor of him taking
me out to a restaurant. :)

I like your yule log idea. I was thinking of making a yule log cake to
take the place of a REAL log, but I am a little intimidated by roll
cakes. We'll see how it goes. (If worse comes to worse, I'll mix the
cake crumbs with chocolate pudding and call it "mud", though it might
be hard to get any Yule or Saturnalia or other December holiday
symbolism out of that...)

Bake the cake in coffee cans, then, and slice it lengthwise to fill with
fruits or frosting, then join several for however long a log you want and
frost it like a log. No mess with rolling it, and worrying about the crumb
being either too tender or too tough to roll right.

I think all your ideas are cool!! We have no tree, wanna-be or other (I had
visions of someone, who shall remain Terry, pulling it down and/or apart
before my very eyes), and I so wanted to bake this year, but I cannot stand
for more than 5 minutes anymore, so I have <oh the shame!!!> gone and bought a
sugar cookie mix and frosting and red and green sprinklies and I will bake a
few cookies every day. I, too am intimidated by roll cakes. If ya wind up
with Yule mud, tell everyone you got even closer to the earth and made the
gunk found UNDER the log (so THERE!!!)!!!

Our day continues to go well. *I* even got a surprise or two in the mail -- a
book from a friend on another list and my little brass potpourii burner!!!
And I gave in to temptation and ordered The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings
complete and Unabridged on CD from my audiobook club (I'll worry about paying
them at a later date -- February sounds good, March sounds better).

I am now off to save Winnie the Pooh from a purple face!!!

I have given up on getting my son to send the codes for my site to be
corrected. (i'll beat it out of him the next time I see him-God this
fatherhood stuff is so geat!!!!---Just kidding (-: (-:).

To business, I am interested in your designing a business site for me to
sell papyrus maps and pictures. Later I will probably add models, ship
data, etc.to the site. Like the site outline for the sale of period
jewelry on our NR website. I have three papyrus maps and one bridge
picture finished that can be displayed.

I do not wish to take you on a "cheap date", however, a well-designed
sales web-site would be worth several cheap dates to.me!!

I need to know your requirements for site outline and set-up and a
ball-park figure for a requested fee. On your acceptance of this offer
I will mail a $40.00 agreement fee to seal the bargain, and you can
begin work. I warn you that my skills in Internet HTML are vitually
nil, but from "surfing the net" I know what I like. I think that the
site will be successful as I have had several promises to link the site
when I am finished. The site should also have available space for
offering French and Indian, American Revolution and American Civil War
maps, hard copy battle descriptions and tape descriptions. I have some
other ideas in mind, bt they are as yet, not fully developed. I want to
offer Nova Roma 15% of the proceeds of the sale site, so that will be
part of the pitch. I can have the required maps / pictures scanned into
a disk if you will tell me what mode of software you require.

Although this is a contract offer and not a gift you may consider this
my donation to your Saturnalia for your family. I wish you the very
best from my world to yours, and it is my belief that the light that
shines upon my religious altar shines also upon yours in just a slightly
different light. I hope some day to be able to make both yours and your
chidren's aquaintaince, in person, and hopefully someday to see you on
the field at a Roman Event / Festival. Please forward also my Best
Respects to your honorable "husband and co-conspitator" and hope that
your "union" may be long and favorable. Finally please accept my thanks
and appreciation for your friendship and support in these last very few
months and it is my hope also that those delightful prospects will
continue in following years.

Salvete,
A friend of mine sent this to me recently, and, in light of our recent
conversation about pagan nomenclature, I thought I'd share it.

The 12 Days of the Eurocentrically Imposed Midwinter Festival
(Author: Unknown)
***************************************************
On the 12th day of the Eurocentrically Imposed Midwinter Festival, my
potential-acquaintance-rape-survivor gave to me:

Twelve males reclaiming their inner warrior through ritual drumming

Eleven pipers piping (plus the 18-member pit orchestra made up of members in
good standing of the Musicians Equity Union as called for in their union
contract even though they will not be asked to play a note)

Ten melanin-deprived testosterone-poisoned scions of the patriarchal ruling
class system leaping

Nine persons engaged in rhythmic self-expression

Eight economically disadvantaged female persons stealing milk-products from
enslaved Bovine-Americans

Seven endangered swans swimming on federally protected wetlands

Six enslaved fowl-Americans producing stolen non-human animal products

Five golden symbols of culturally sanctioned enforced domestic incarceration

(NOTE: after a member of the Animal Liberation Front threatened to throw red
paint at my computer, the calling birds, French hens and partridge have been
reintroduced to their native habitat. To avoid further animal-American
enslavement, the remaining gift package has been revised)

Four hours of recorded whale songs

Three deconstructionist poets

Two Sierra Club calendars printed on recycled processed tree carcasses

and a Spotted Owl activist chained to an old-growth pear tree!

T. Labienus Fortunatus

Salvete!

If these messages are meant to be funny-- I failed to see the joke.
But
if these messages are sincere than I honestly feel that Nova Roma should
have a separate mailing list & chat room for the sexual deviants and
other
potential trouble makers. At least than 'we' could keep tabs as to were
they
were, and at the same time keep the NORMAL mailing list open for
meaningful
and descent dialogue.
Since the Gods are not setting any noticeable moral standards for the
citizens, unless they are acting indiscreetly, and what appears to be a
lack
of interest amongst the general citizenry-- I have decided, with the
help of
the divine logos, to add by distaste in these vial acts, and by doing so
I
hope, with the help of others, to rid Nova Roma of the filth, perverted,
amoral, anti-community and loathsome creatures that might, and in all
probability will, harm the great intentions that the good citizens hope
to
achieve.
