Salvete!
Yes! The Western part of the empire had fallen but not on account of
christianity. And, don't forget about the legacy of the Eastern Roman Empire,
Byzantine Empire, that not only survived but flourished , under Christianity, for
well over 1000 years.

Salvete, omnes...
Marius Merullus said:
>I fail to see what is objectionable about this statement from Romanus.
>Whom does it offend? How does it insult?
...to which Floria Zonara replied:
>Well, if you don't consider calling listmembers and fellow citizens of
>Nova Roma "filthy, perverted, amoral, anti-community and loathsome
>creature"s offensive and insulting, you have a far thicker skin than I
>do.
And I, Marius Fimbria, think someone maybe didn't read all of
somebody's something, because Marius Merullus was kind enough to
enclose the statement of Marconius Romanus to which he was responding,
and it was *not* the one about filthy amoral perversion. See below:
>>Yes! The Western part of the empire had fallen but not on account of
>>Christianity. And, don't forget about the legacy of the Eastern Roman
>>Empire, Byzantine Empire, that not only survived but flourished under
>>Christianity for well over 1000 years.
Okay, some of us do have thicker skins; others are simply paying more
attention... This (not reading the whole thing, including block quotes
and stuff tacked on at the end before reacting) is the kind of thing
that leads to gross misunderstandings and flame wars on the List. Not
the only thing that leads to such, but one of 'em.
For Marius Merullus and others who joined Nova Roma and/or the List
after last summer, what Lucianus Dexippus was referring to when he said
:Ok...this was a heated debate not too long ago so let's just keep it
:there...ok?
...was our *first* Great Big Religious Fuss, waaaayyy back in August,
mere weeks after I became a Citizen. A discussion of Nova Roma's
future branched off into one about Roma Mater's past, which in turn led
to the inevitable question of why Rome fell. Someone mentioned
Gibbon's theory that the rise of Christianity had a lot to do with it.
I don't have to tell you what came next, but we had our first loss of
a Citizen over it: a Christian named Festus, who from the few posts of
his that I have seems to have been a fairly moderate fellow until the
pagan fundies pushed him into a corner. His departure did not bode
well for me. I felt acutely uncomfortable here for a long time
afterwards...but I've outlived the feeling, and I'm happy to say
welcomeness is no longer an issue for me. (I, personally, shall be
leaving Nova Roma on a funeral couch or not at all!) >({|:-)
Anyway, the thread about Christianity and Rome's Fall also contained
much debate about Rome vs. Byzantium, and how 'Roman' was the Byzantine
Empire anyway, and how far a society could evolve before it ceased to
be recognizably Roman. This is what Dexippus was reacting to in
Marconius' statement about Byzantium.
I did enjoy that part of the August debate, by the way; it, along with
more recent threads on (for example) the meaning of the word 'pagan',
has become a part of Nova Roma's ongoing quest for self-definition.
Asking ourselves and each other who we are as a people and what that
identity means to us as we go about our daily lives is the beginning of
philosophy and *always* a worthwhile endeavor.
And now ya know!

Terrys Saturnalia 2 and 3 |
From: |
Mater2Two@-------- |

Salvete --
I was told by more than one person to keep posting Terrys holiday (and life
for that matter) to the list and ignore the Scrooges who don't care or don't
want to hear it. They know where their delete key is and are educated enough
to use it (hopefully). Remember "Tis the season to be Jolly -- you be good or
you'll be sorry" -- Saturn is watching!!! <G> How department store Saturns
will react to Terry and Lapis calling them by their true name will be
facinating to see. There IS none in town, so this year we won't visit him.
Terry won't be afraid, she isn't afraid of anyone (I don't know if that's a
good thing or not). If nothing else, Saturn better glue the beard on
tight!!!!
Friday, the second day of Saturnalia, brought Terry her talking Winnie the
Pooh book. Another winner!! She liked it so much I had to pack it in the
diaper bag when we went to the senior center. I dressed her in winter white
-- a pair of pants and a nice top all winter white with a sort of leafy
pattern in gold on it. I put her hair in a pony tail and tied it with a scrap
of golden material (from a homemade present that didn't work and was
abandoned) I made into a nice hair ribbon (so I guess the ribbon was a present
too). Since the senior transportation bus people were leaving early that day,
I had to bring the wagon for the drive to the senior center. Terry was a
wonderful hit!! She walked to every table and looked and smiled at everyone.
I think this will be a nice tradition for us every year. The local 8th
graders came to sing carols to the seniors and Terry looked with rapt
attention as they sang. She was sitting on a table with the grandparents of
one of the 8th graders.
She, as usual, fought her nap (but she was surrounded by her subjects, all
playing Hail Toddler, so it is sort of understandable) and didn't get to sleep
until 1pm, after nibbling on a cookie and rocking in Mommys lap. I had an
appointment at the clinic at 1:45 and put a sleeping Terry in the wagon and
covered her with her scarf, my hat and my big black scarf and her coat for the
walk over to the clinic (not 2 blocks away from the clinic).
We didn't get started for home until about 2:45 and it was COLD. The
temperature was about 30 but the wind was whipping. I put Terrys jacket on
her, pulled up and tied her hood and put on her mittens. I also sat her on
the end of my big scarf and wrapped the rest of it around her, like a blanket.
She sat in the wagon looking into the pages of her new book and making it
talk, but it wasn't too long before she was crying and screaming from the
cold. I tried to cover her face better, with a hood I had been wearing over
my own hat, but she didn't like it and kept pulling it off (she couldn't see
-- she'd rather freeze than not be able to see apparently). The only choice I
had was to pull the wagon as fast as I could all the way home, to get her
inside. It still was a long walk, with my poor Terry crying from the cold,
but we made pretty good time. I warmed up a little of the Mullen, not too
hot, for her to try and warm her a bit. Her cheeks were red. I don't think
she was dangerously cold, just didn't like being cold. The warm drink warmed
her nicely, though she spilled it all over her nice white outfit
(sigh....laundry here I come), and she was soon playing happilly.
This morning brought her her new crayons and a coloring book filled with teddy
bears (Poo)! She's a quick study, my Terry. I didn't even have to show her
how they worked, she's watched me write and sign stuff all her life. Needless
to say she dosen't get in the lines, but she's is having a wonderful time
nonetheless.
Breakfast was eggs and bread and "juse". She is going back and forth betewwn
her books, and when she brings me one I read to her or look at the bears with
her (she puts the book on my lap and says "book"). It will be cold today and
so I will try to stay inside as much as we can, but I will probably have to go
out for staples (I need an orange to make more Mullen and a few other things).
I was surprised by the weather yesterday, but today the temperature isn't
supposed to get much past 10 or 15 degrees (actually that was allegedly the
high for the day, with temps falling to -5 or so) and tomorrow will be all of
5 to 10 degrees. I willl be putting Terry in her snowsuit and ski-mask and
little boots this time and probably letting her walk. My back is still
suffering from the long, fast walk home yesterday.
So far this had been a pretty good holiday. No money from her dad yet, but I
wasn't expecting it and I am glad *I* made sure of a nice holiday for my
Terry.
I am now off to tighten the bolts on Terrys REALLY little red wagon (a gift
from Gramma) so she can pull it to the store when we go (maybe she'll have
some pity for her poor momma after this, but somehow I doubt it <G>). Wish us
warmth and luck (that she dosen't get too tired and make momma carry the
groceries, the wagon AND her home)!!
Valete,
Crys

Merullus...you misunderstood me. There was nothing insulting about Romanus'
post on the Byzantine empire. My point was just that we've already been

Yes...thanks for understanding where I was coming from. At least someone pays
attention to threads on this list (ha ha ha).
But please remember that Festus was not "pushed into a corner by Pagan
Fundies". His remarks were often insulting and he refused to let the debate
end of its own accord. He was determined to keep up the fight until everone
involved acknowledge Byzantine as Roman. Sorry, but I was not about to do
that. If that makes me a Pagan Fundie...well, I'll drink to that. But I just
see it as upholding my own opinion. If anyone wishes to think of the
Byzantines as Romans, they may do so...it is a debate that has carried on
through the centuries and will not be solved on this list. But I just can't
see it as such. An extension of the Roman Empire? Yes. Roman
themselves...no.
But let's not start this again. Everyone has agreed to disagree and we move

Have I read these titles? Not all of them, but I have a lot of research

As for my recommendation, well they're all good, but what you should do is

Hej All!
Just a note to let ya know. My ISP changed entry nodes, so my On-Line
time is, for now, a long distance call. I'll be keeping up on e-mail,
but visits to the Tavern will be infrequent and quick.
Take care - Venii

to this message for any and all that had problems similar to
Audens.
