Subject: More Cybele...
From: "Antonio Grilo" amg@--------

Salvete!

Yesterday I've presented the view of scholars on the organization of the cult of Cybele, and as you saw, there are many doubts. Today, I'll present my own view...

When the cult of Cybele was introduced in Rome, there was no specialized clergy in Rome, and the sacerdotes (men and women) had to come from Phrygia. As Pliny tells us, sacerdotes were served by galli, the eunuchs. Wether these sacerdotes were promoted galli and as such eunuch as well, we cannot know.
After the cult increased the number of faithful among the romans, a question is raised: were the the male sacerdotes still phrygian? If they were Romans, they were surely not eunuchs (unless they were slaves, maybe).

Now lets advance in time. We are in the reign of Antoninus Pius, 2nd century AD. Due to the influence of Mithrasism (to which it was frequently associated) or other phrygian deities such as Anahita, the sacerdotes ask the authorization of the Quindecemvirs in order to introduce a new ritual, the taurobolium. The Quindecemvirs regulate the practice possibly ordering the creation of a new body of priests, the archigalli, which become responsible for directing the taurobolia. In the [De excusatione 148 of the Fragmenta Vaticana], exemption of taxes is given to those who - under the instructions of an archigallus - dedicates a taurobolium 'pro salute imperatoris'. It seems then, that the archigallus gained is office precisely by dedicating a taurobolium in substitution for his castration, as I've already pointed yesterday, and as such, they could be Roman citizens of plain right.

Well, who were the sacerdotes? In my opinion, they were above both the galli and the archigalli. Galli and archigalli being priest initiates. I say this because e.g. the title 'summus sacerdos' is more likely to be the correspondent to the 'pater patrum' of the mithraists, the chief priest of the cult. And if during the Empire there epigraphical monuments tend to evidence the presence of Roman citizens among the sacerdotes, how did they obtained the office if they were not galli? Well, in my opinion by having been archigalli. Otherwise, as already put as a possibility, there must have been another path to reach the rank of sacerdote, other than firstly becoming a gallus.

Nevertheless, my sugestion to Nova Roma is the following:
SACERDOTES - Priests (men and women) properly said, organized in an hierarchy to be defined by the Collegium Pontificum. Women may have ascended directly to sacerdotes, and this is in accordance with the legend of Cybele and Attis, for Cybele was a godess since the beginning and Attis only became a god through sacrifice.
ARCHIGALLI - Initiates (male only?) to priests through a sacrifice. As taurobolia are not allowed in Nova Roma, there must be another way...
GALLI - Also priest initiates, but through auto-mutilation. My personal opinion is that this rank should be banned in Nova Roma, or otherwise discuss a symbolic way of performing this sacrifice.

Valete omnes!

Antonius Gryllus Graecus

As per the constitution, Consul Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus is Consul

:Salve.
:
:Looking at the "Provinciae in North America" map on the Nova Roma web site,
:I feel that many of the names of the these provinces lack "Romanness". We
:should reconsider the use of English words for the points of the compass in
:favor of their Latin equivalents. Likewise, we could replace "US" with
:"America",

I think that this is a good idea, especially for official media like the
website. Of course, people will still refer to North America as North
America most of the time, but the Latin names would be more appropriate as
official names on the Nova Roma map.

Salvete omnes...

May I suggest '[America] Aferensis' for the Southwestern Province?
'...Africae' is likely to confuse more than it informs, as there is a
rather large continent by that name, and we may eventually have Nova
Romans there, too... 'Aferensis' honors the same wind, and is in line
with such historical Province names as Hispania Tarragonensis et Gallia
Narbonnensis.

The larger suggestion, to give the modern Provinces Latin names, is, I
think, entirely appropriate, and I hereby applaud it! And my thanks to
the suggesters for reminding us early on that 'America' (and Brasilia,
and Australia) are *already* Latinized proper nouns, and do not need
the further embellishment of excess '-us's and '-ia's.

Any other recommendations for a more Roman name for the SW Province are
welcome! (Bein's I live here and all.)

Gratias vobis ago...
