Salus et Fortuna Omnes, Salvete!
I was home over the Turn of the Year, visiting Family and In-Laws,
Here's a recipe for a baked pasta dish which is a holiday time treat my
mother makes.
Chronne (pronounced shah' doan - neat how these dialect words are so
different between the spelling and the saying.)
First, a few words about pasta for the Italian-impaired in the
audience. Pasta means paste, as in a mixture of flour (the best being
Durum {a hard, winter wheat} Semolina) and water. Other ingredients may
be added for differing flavor or appearence characteristics: eggs,
spinach, beets, cheese... Macaroni is a pasta which is hollow and
tubular. Spaghetti is long, round, solid strands. Fettucini is long,
slender, flat strands. Noodles are thin, slender to wide, flat strands
of egg-paste. Gnocchi are Italian dumplings; pasta with potato added.
A book the size of an unabridged dictionary wouldn't do justice to the
variety that exists in the world of pastas. (I usually have 12 to 15
different types in my cupboard at any one time.)
Ingredients:
1 pound each of the dry pastas: Perciatelle (thin, long macaroni - Ziti
can be substituted), Spaghetti (regular thickness) and Cappelini (Angel
Hair/thin spaghetti).
1 pound of coarsely chopped Pepperoni. You can substitute 1 pound of
cooked Italian sausage, seperated into small pieces (hot is best) or 1
cup each of chopped green peppers and mushrooms (plus 1 tsp each ground
fennel, garlic powder, onion powder and 1/2 tsp black pepper).
1/2 pound each fresh grated Parmesan and Romano cheeses.
12 eggs, beaten - one can substitute 1 1/2 cups of heavy cream sauce
plus 1/4 cup each of Parmesan and Romano.
Procedure:
Cook the pasta until it is just a little too firm, 2 to 3 minutes less
than the package instructions should do, and drain. (Preheat the oven to
350F while the pasta is cooking.) Pour the pasta into a lightly oiled
baking pan (mine is 12" x 18" x 4") Place the eggs (or sauce) in a large
mixing bowl, stir in the pepperoni (or substitute) and cheese. Pour
over the pastas and turn until well coated with the cheese mixture.
Bake until the top is lightly browned (about 35 to 45 minutes). This is
good hot or cold, reheats nicely, very filling.
A pasta dish, which requires no tomato sauce.

Law Committee Report |

We've gotten some excellent volunteers for the NR law research, so I'll
keep everyone informed of our progress as it happens.
First: our goal is to propose a system of civil law for NR, which
includes the laws themselves, the penalties, the processes for trials.
When we've got this information, we'll turn the whole thing over to the
Senate and probably the Praetore Urbanii for consideration. We know that
trials were conducted by the Praetor Urbanis, but we have no civil laws
to enforce.
Our main problem is picking a period of history to emulate. Republican
law spans quite a long time, but we're starting with the Twelve Tables
and working from there.
Volunteers for this committee (so far) are:

I recommend that the committee keep in close touch by e-mail, so that we
can discuss our findings. This is NOT going to be a walk in the park and
it isn't going to be done very quickly, so don't expect instant results!
If anyone commits any major transgressions, I guess we'll just have to
stone him or her or toss 'em in the Tullian Jail to wait until we have a
system!
Thanks to everyone who's working on this gigantic project.
