From: Claudia Aprica quinta_claudia_lucentia_aprica@--------
Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 12:39:41 -0800 (PST)
Salvete omnes!
Well, I'm back from my Vac, and I've been a busy girl!
I'm proud to be able to announce that a long-time pet project of
mine, creating a virtual lararium for my gens on the web, has now been
completed, and all Nova Romans are of course welcome to take a look,
at <a href="http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Agora/1133/lares.html" target="_top" >http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Agora/1133/lares.html</a>
Obviously a lararium is primarily a private family shrine, but
there's no reason as far as I'm concerned why anybody shouldn't leave
offerings if they feel they want to. If people like the format and the
artwork, they're also welcome to copy both the jpgs and the HTML code
to create virtual shrines of their own (this includes on the main Nova
Roma site, if anyone's interested). However, if anyone does copy the
shrine, I'd welcome a credit and a link back to my page from yours,
and also an e-mail to let me know you've used it.
I'd particularly welcome feedback of any kind on this shrine.
I've created it on a relatively new browser (Netscape Communicator
4.0), and using a high resolution monitor, so I've no idea what it'll
look like on older browsers - it could look awful. If anyone gets
something which is obviously a mess when they log in to it, could they
let me know what's wrong with it, and I'll try to adapt things so that
as many browsers as possible show it as I intended. I'd also love to
know how to make the jpgs into transparencies, so that the columns,
pediment and pedestal of the shrine stand directly against the lilac
background of my page, instead of in little white rectangles, as they
are doing now.
Anyway, enough techno-babble for now (apologies)! Go check out my
shrine, and please let me know what you think of it (good or bad!).
Responses are probably best e-mailed directly to me, rather than the
list, however, to avoid heavy traffic.
Valete!
Aprica.

Salvete omnes,

I guess the informal law committee will already know about these, but for
the benefit of others I've found the following sites have some interesting
stuff on Roman Law:

In my humble attempt to become Roman-law-literate (Scaevola, if you are
there, I meant to say rescripts, not reverts!), I was reading Justinian's
Institutiones. It struck me as odd that he refers to Antoninus Pius as
"divus". In Book I, chapter VIII, DE HIS QUI SUI VEL ALIENI IURIS SUNT
Justinian wrote: "..nam ex constitutione divi Pii Antonini qui sine causa
servum suum occiderit..." which means "for by the laws of (the Divine --
title applied to deified emperors, right?) Antoninus Pius he who had killed
his slave without cause..."

Why would Justinian refer to Antoninus Pius this way? Had the word "divus"
really lost so much meaning by Justinian's time that it could be used in
such an important context without causing some confusion?

Full text of Justinian's Institutiones is at

Valete Conscript Fathers and Mother,

I withold my vote pending a recitation of the qualifications of
Gaius Drusus Domitianus for the position. I don't think it's too
much to ask that the Senator calling for a vote to appoint
someone to a position give some sort of reason why they should be
appointed.

And I quite frankly am distressed that my fellow Senators have
voted on this appointment without any presentation of the
qualifications for the individual in question to assume the
office. Are we to merely rubber-stamp everything the current
Consul wishes to enact?

As I recall, my calls for position appointments were always
accompanied by at least a brief summary of why the person should
be appointed. I urge the new Consul not to be lax in his
responsibilities.

I think, though I can't now remember where I read it, that the later
empire went on referring to Emperors as "Divus" but squared it with the
theology by making it mean "divinely inspired". But in this case it could
equally well be just lawyers' conservatism about forms and titles: e.g.
Anglo-American lawyers still talk about the "fee simple" (feudal tenure) to
mean landownership in some contexts. Some literature I've read recently
also suggests that Justinian's compilation had a strongly retro/ nostalgic
character and hence the Digest preserves some stuff which was wholly
obsolete.

Salve,

I am a bit confused. The subject header on Cinncinatus' message states that
it comes from the SEnate Board. ::scratches head::

I, for one, am not a Senator, and therefore am unused to receiving messages
from the Senate Board. In point of fact, it seems downright weird to have
messages here on the *public*/**regular-old-citizen* board that seem to
rrelate directly to (and only to) Senators.

The original message sent by Germanicus was sent not here, but to the Senate
Board. I have serious suspicions as to why Cinncinatus chose to reply to it
here. Could it be he merely captialized on the opportunity to publicly slur
Germanicus? I would sincerely hope he is not of such low manners.

Bottom line.....his response didn't belong here. Request to ALL
Senators......please keep Senatorial discussion/spats where they belong. I am
confident that when there is information we citizens do need (and not personal
squabbles/disagreements that *some* want publicized) we will be told
accordingly.

For a brief time, I was able to get into the Senate board and I saw his
message. I refuse to let these snide comments of his go unanswered, and
left the following message. We need to start treating each other with
civility -- I don't care HOW dirty things got in Ancient Rome.

:Valete Conscript Fathers and Mother,

:And I quite frankly am distressed that my fellow Senators have

And I'm distressed that you don't know the two candidates any
better than you do. The rest of us know them. We've taken the time
to exchange messages with them and read their posts. Since we DO
know them, there is no need for a lengthy list of qualifications.
If you have doubts, there's nothing stopping you from asking the
Candidates yourself and addressing specific issues.

And the "rubber-stamping" comment is WAY out of line. As is the
remark about the new Consul being "lax in his responsibilities."
If you're accusing the Consul, please be specific. If you're not,
you owe him an apology for the implication.

:As I recall, my calls for position appointments were always

Yes. It's a plot. Cincinnatus arranged with BeSeen to screw up the
message boards, so that he could post to the list and reply via the
wrong button, which is something that has NEVER happened on this list
before! BTW, I have PROOF that Cincinnatus is also the Lone Gunman, and
I'm pretty sure he's the real Unabomber, too. Also, he's actually
Marconius -- he just used an alias. That scamp.

And the people say that we never let them know what's going on!!!
See folks? Nothing happens in the Senate that doesn't happen here! And
if we're ashamed of the people hearing it, we shouldn't be saying it.

The new consuls haven't even been in office an entire month and they've
already been accused of being lax in their responsibilities and wanting
the Senate to rubber-stamp thier every proposals. (Lucius and Decius,
you power-mad Dictators, you!) At least give them a CHANCE to mess up
before they're accused. Talk about low manners.

Now there's a terrific idea! I especially like the "virtual prayer book"
that was on the virtual lararium. I'd love to see something akin to Quinta
Claudia Lucentia Aprica's original virtual lararium up on the web site.

Maybe a shrine to Roma Herself? Hel, we could have a whole Virtual Forum.
The Pantheon, shrines to a bunch of different Gods, an entry to the Senate
(to see what issues are being talked about and what various votes are). This
could be verrrrry interesting.

Patricia, how are you at virtual reality modeling? I recently got Bryce 3D
and have been playing with it (it's a 3D graphics program that's terrific
with generating buildings and terrain). We could do some groovy things with
modeled buildings and temples.

Sorry guys. The cats slipped out of the bag for a while there. Fess up. What is
Domitianus being considered for? That little bombette didn't say that. Someone has
already jumped over a conclusion. So just tell us poor, iggerent, common citizens
what, and maybe we won't start any wild rumors. Then again, it might be too late
already. I'm sure some of you folks in the bordered togae will be lurking in the
chat room, ready to come in with the valium vinum and tranquilizer pila... Come on!
Out with it! Nova Roma doesn't have a dog catcher (yet?). I'm sure it isn't
Dictator. If it's something as mundane as a praetorship for one of the unsubdued
Provinces, I suggest you jazz it up a bit. We mob types want something Juicy! How
about a back room cabal to appoint him Arbiter of Fashion over Dexippus. That would
be worthy of the big headlines, and maybe a hair pulling fight to for a grand
finale!
[The real paranoiac, conspiracy theory part of my half fried brain just thought that
the whole thing, starting with the so-called "slip" (nudge-nudge) was an intentional
act stemming from a long of plotting to liven up what has been a quite list for the
last few weeks. But the again, one of you might have planted this thought im my
mind while I was typing the first part of this ...]

Well, since Rusticus has given up his wicked City ways to go back to the
farm in Latium, we felt that SOMEONE should carry on as Driver of the
Custom Chariot deVille with leopard upholstery...

Oh yeah, like THAT'S never happened!

No WAY could anyone unseat the fabulous Diva Dexippina, and I'm not half
woman enough to try it! Besides, I'm wearing the wrong shoes.

Uh oh, caught us! Yes, it's Senate Mind Control. While you guys thought
we were debating, we were actually sitting blissed-out and chanting,
sending incredibly powerful Senate Scientology Mind Rays to all the
Citizens. Do you, perhaps, feel the strange urge to send us money,
jewelry, expensive cars and tax-free muni bonds?

Actually we were proposing the two excellent and hardworking Citizens
for a couple of vacant posts. They've both been very unselfish of their
time and efforts. When the results are in, the Consuls will make an
announcement.

Gertmanicus, You did some decent work in setting up the NR web site. Do you have
