Gratias ago tibi, amice Marce Minuci Audens!
I have sugested an 'in vivo' presentation, i.e. a PC connected to the
Internet where conference participants can directly interact with Nova Roma.
With some luck, it will be a major CENSUS for Nova Roma, just like: Welcome
to Rome. Please sign here cives... Next.. =)
Vale!

What a great idea!! I endorse it 100%. You could make a list of
general topics for he conference members , together with people to
contact with specific questions in specific areas. I would certainly be
willing to help and I think that several others would as well.

That's a great idea, and it reaches even farther... It's that such a thing
should be added to the Nova Roma Web page, such that people with specific
questions would be easily directed to the right person.

Normally, I don't believe there would be a problem, but at the moment,
and for aleast another week, Patricia Cassia has computer problems with
her home comuter and the only one that she can use is at work, and that
is a very limited source.
You could direct the question to her with a question of how long you
would have to wait for the service, or you could simply contact some
members in Nova Roma who would be willing to assist you in this effort;
Venator- I believe you should ask as a food / wine specialist;
and have the Conference members go through you to contact your
assistants for now. That way you can keep a record of who is interested
in what, and if your assistants will reference you as well, then you
will additionally have a record of information transmitted. That data
wil be valuable in follow efforts, and will be useful for your campaign
for higher political office next year!!!!

The Conference will be held on September, and as such we have plenty of time
to put these services working, as well as time for me to complete the
Lusitania page. But of course the span of these services are not limited to
the conference and as such, they should be put working as quickly as
possible. I'm also waiting for Patricia Cassia in order to start the Games
of Nova Roma.

Pro Praetor. Did you flunk basic Siege craft 101?
A Trebuchet is a two-armed machine that has a counter weight at the end of one
arm, which is used to whip the other end which holds the payload through an
arc, where at the end of the arc, is propelled through the air. The weight
can be rocks, slaves pulling ropes, or a tractor, (this is what propels the
modern model which throws pianos). (See Diagram.)
The Trebuchet came into existence because the Medievals lost the ability to
fashion tension through the use sinew, to propel their machines. The Onager
(Wild-Ass) was a single arm machine. The arm that would hold the payload was
attached to a crossbeam so the whole thing looked like an inverted "T." This
crossbeam was secured in a frame, and wound with sinew. When the weapon is at
rest the payload end is straight up, when it's cocked, the end is laying
parallel to the ground. (See Diagram)
The name must have come about because when the weapon is shot, the arm whips
through a short 90 arc, hurls the payload at the top of the arc, then the arm
smashes into a wood stop. So much trouque is developed that the machine's
recoil causes the machine leap up in the air, briefly. The one I saw
demostrated in England was throwing a 10 pound stone. It jumped off the
ground, three feet, on each shot. An apt named kicking donkey.
Both these machines are "high trajectory" weapons. That is, the payload soars
through a high arc before coming to earth.
Skorpions are bolt throwers. They are like oversize crossbows, except they
don't use a bow to transmit stored energy, they use sinew to flex the arms,
which as they spring forward hurls the playload, the Greeks called this type
of machine a Ballista.
Ballistae are low trajectory weapons. The payload skims through the air in an
almost flat arc. This weapon is easier to aim then a high trajectory one.
My point now being, while all machines are catapults, this is a generic term
like rifle is today. A ballista bolt thrower, is different then a stone
thrower. And both are very different from a Onager. And an Onager is very
different from Trebuchet.
We don't call a Thompson Sub Machine-gun a M-16. We don't call a Chaffe a
Abrams. We don't call a Los Angeles class submarine a missile boat. Why do
we have so much trouble with Roman weaponary and military terms?
Vale
Q. Fabius.

Salve,
Crys wanted me to post this question to the list. Due to the upcoming
birth of Lapis. She wanted to know what she should list as Lapis's
Religion, should it be Pagan, Roman Pagan, Religo Romana, ....any other
suggests. She would really like to have some input in this matter. I
speak to her almost every day, so if she will get the responses. :)

I would say if she intends to worship the Gods and Goddess of Roma then
she ought to use "Religio Romana". That's my vote anyway :-)

Why does she need to list a religion? Is it required on the birth
certificate?
If so, I would say she should list it "Pagan". My reason being is that it is
an umbrella term. Does Crys follow the Religio Romana to a "t"? Is
everything in her spirit of "Roman" pagan origin? Only she can answer these
questions, but to me saying "Roman Pagan" is like saying "Indian Hindu" and
"Religio Romana" doesn't mean anything to others outside NR.
Just my two cents....but then again, this label debate has been discussed
before.
