Subject: The Plebeian cults of Ceres, Liber and Libera

Salvete omnes!

This statement follows the correspondence I've been exchanging with our honoured Tribune Plebis Avidius Tullius Callidus.
As you may know, as Aedile Plebis I have also religious duties, nmely those that concern the Plebeian Cults of Ceres, Liber and Libera. Please refer to the Nova Roma page on the Gods and Goddesses, which states amont other things:

«
Ceres is the goddess of agriculture. During a drought in 496 BCE, the Sibylline Books ordered the institution of the worship of Demeter, Dionysus and Persephone, called by the Latin names of Ceres, Liber and Libera. Ceres was the goddess of the plebians: the plebian aediles cared for her temple and had their official residences in it, and were responsible for the games at the Cerealia, her original festival on August 12-19. There was a women's 9-day fast and festival when women offered the first corn harvest to Ceres, originally celebrated every four years, but later held every October 4.
Liber Pater. God of the vine. Associated with the Greek God Bacchus.

»

I still don't know when were the Liberalia (festivals of Liber and Libera) festivals celebrated, but I will find out.

In order to better perform my duties, It would be fine if I had some statuary. I'm thinking of buying a statuette of Ceres and Proserpina and another of Dionysus, thus completing the triad. Nevertheless, I don't know if it would not be better to have official statuettes blessed by the Auguri and Pontifex Maximus, which would from year to year pass from Aedile Plebis to Aedile Plebis.

What do you think would be better?

Valete!

Somehow I think that it may be too logistically challenging to pass statuary
down among magistrates. Who would file insurance claims when the statues
were damaged or lost (and they inevitably would be) in transit from Europe
to America or to Asia?

I don't know the cost of statuary, but I imagine that it is significantly
expensive for most of us. I understand your point about getting it to help
you perform your duties, but I dont think that Aediles should have to
procure such things. Perhaps the recommendation should be that Aediles
procure, or fashion themselves, some images of these deities.

After all, if we force the Aediles to spend all their money on statuary, how
will they pay thereafter to wine and dine us :)?

Well, devotion and prayer are wine and dine to the soul! =)
Then I think that I will buy my own statuary in order to build a personal shrine, where I can practice my personal devotion as well as my public duties.

If we help her out, do we get invited to the Toga Party?

Salvete Quirites

I think that for now the best thing to be done is to build your "personal shrine(s)", but do set aside funds to contribute for the building of "our" temples and shrines. Marcus Cassius is working to develop stamps and coins to help Nova Roma raise funds for the our goals. There is also the Macellum perhaps, Nova Roma should propose to some of the statuary companies if they would like to join our Macellum and offer us a portion of the income like JBL and Amazon.com. What do you think eveyone? Censores?

There is currently a shrine to Venus in the home of of this Augur. If anyone
is ever in the Lodi, NJ area and wishes to visit the shrine, please let me
know.

Salve,

I think that's a great idea. I was wondering where you got your info on
the cults. I've been doing research since this summer on the cults of
Diana and Iuno b oth for my gens and as part of my work as Curule
Aedile, and I've been faced with a dearth of good resources on the
subject unless I want to bankrupt myself and order them all or do the
same by paying tuition for another year at Notre Dame just so I can have
library priviledges. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Salve Dexippius

If I'm ever in NJ, you can bet I'll drop by and see. Once spring finally
arrives, I'll be planting a special garden with herbs and such sacred to
the Gods of Roma and I'm going to see about a piece of statuary for the
center. Anyone know of a good place to get statues in the midwest?

Salvete,
Consul Equitius asks if Nova Roma should approach the statuary companies to
see if they might be interested in joining our Macellum. I think that's a
great idea. We need more resources in this area. Finding appropriate statues
is rather difficult. Even companies that do offer classical reproductions
generally have a fairly limited range of figures available. Toscano has a
selection of classical figures, and I was able to obtain a very nice Dancing
Faun and a Hercules from them. Now, most of Toscano's statues are done in
"weather proof museum quality resin" rather than marble or bronze, but the
quality is good and the prices reasonable. Eleganza has a range of figures in
marble and bronze, with imperial price tags, and they claim to be able to
obtain just about anything from their sources in Italy. Speaking of Italy,
are there any Italian statuary companies that are able to sell direct to
consumers in the USA ?

Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus
