That's it.

THAT is IT.

I post a message helping explain/sort out the confusion of titles for
Republican Roman provincial officials. This message is well-received
but questions remain. I post a second message to help clear up the
loose ends, at least as far as the old Republic, in what I hope will be
an entertaining format...

...and am very pointedly reminded by the Consul that I myself am *not*
eligible for any of the offices under discussion.

I first hit the Web site *last April*. From April to July it took me
to decide that the pleasure of having other Romans around was worth the
price of second-class Citizenship. Second-class, Consul, because I am
Roman enough to want to contribute more to the State than mere
presence, and have felt keenly from the first the sting of being barred
from doing so for reasons having nothing to do with qualifications,
willingness or ability.

I thank you, Lucius Equitius, for quoting the relevant sections of the
Constitution and Senatusconsultum on the topic of how Nova Roma is
handling these ancient offices. However, there was no need--NO need,
Consul--to tack on the bit about the religious requirements for
magistrates. If you had something to say to me about my own
aspirations or the appropriateness thereof, you could well have done so
in private.

I do not need reminders, Consul. I am tired of having my nose rubbed
in Article 6 like it was my own dogpile. This must cease.

Praetors of the Provinces, your hands are tied: You must either find
(1) enough followers of the Religio to assist you in your duties, or
(2) enough people who don't mind at least going through the motions.
You may not appoint a Legate, however otherwise qualified, who cannot
pass one of these two religious tests. I doubt very much that the
Praetors and Propraetors of old bothered themselves about this. Score
one for 'concessions to modern sensibilities'...

I suppose I should not be posting this message, but since we apparently
have the same idea (seeing that Nova Roma moves ahead) I feel that I can
write you personnally without doing your reputation any harm. If
because of my new patrician standing yo would rather not correspond with

Ave Comespiritu, et Salvete Omnes!

Please, Friends, Fellow Romans.

The majority of persons who apply for Citizenship here in the New City are
well aware of the requirements for Office.

Some of us have taken the decision that a Public Honoring is not in conflict
with our Private Practice. (I look upon the Olympians as being Cousins
German to the Asgardians, in the broader sense of European Heritage.)

Some have taken the opposite decision, and have thereby excluded themselves
from Magisterial Office. As my Friend L. Marius Fimbria points out so
strongly, they do not need the reminders of the decision they have taken.
Especially when they make no indication in a conversation that they aspire
to any office from which they have disbarred themselves. I have never
considered the offer of information to be a proffer of candidacy.

Having been involved with Paganism/Heathenism for the better part of 25
years, I know that new Re-Awakening Communities are sometimes "boundary"
sensitive. Let not these feelings drive away those who wish to contribute
in those areas in which we can agree.

Public Respect - Private Conscience.

Valete - Venator, Cives Romana

So did Claudius and refered to them as such in several speeches.
