Thank You very much Patricia for the reminder. Although I do not know
much of the anchestor from which my gens name is takem (only that he was
a legionary and a miles immunes -gromaciti (one who works a groma
{surveying instrument) and gubenator (second in command of a vessel); I
plan a short written memorial to him on the NR Onelist together with a
place in my prayers to him and his gens (my own) and to burn a candle in
honor of his Gods. I will forward a copy of the memorial to the Editor
of the Eagle to use as she sees fit and will keep a hard copy of the
written memorial in a folder dedicated to his memory. In special
recogniton of the day I will select the special Gods of my Gens and
complete that part of my responsibility on the NR Gens listing with the
help of my NR friends. I solicit from those who choose to participate,
their assistance in recommending to me the special Roman Gods that my
gens might have selected. The particular characteristics of the Gens
Minicuia as I see them are:
--The Legions;
--Ships and the Sea;
--Falernian Wine;
--Good Food;
--Service to Rome;
--Military Engineering;
--Military Cartography.
For those who choose to assist me in this honoring of my ancestors will
further pledge a special memorial in my Gens Folder to them with a copy
to Eagle.
Any further ideas for the honoring of my anchestors on this special day
is most humbly submitted. I should be most happy to respond in like
kind to those who would have me honor their anchestors, as well.
Very Respectfully Submitted

Is there any pic with a reconstitution of the ancient Temple of Ceres on the Aventine Hill? Do archaeologists know the original form of the Temple? Are there any remnants of the Temple?

Salvete!
While perusing some of my notes, I discovered a horrible parody of the
Muses. I don't know how it got there or where I obtained it. Anyway
these are the alternate nine Muses;
Catastrophe: Muse of award show telecasts.
Anesthesia: Muse of crossword puzzles.
Euchre: Muse of card tricks.
Dichondra: Muse of pruning and clipping.
Angostura: Muse of blended bar drinks.
Anathema: Muse of novelizations.
Miasma: Muse of tax accounting.
Paraphernalia: Muse of collectibles.
Toyota: Muse of personalized liscense plates.
Maybe these are the modern Muses. Maybe these are the Muses of some
parallel universe like where Spock has a goatee. Maybe it's just
blasphemy, I don't know. I do know that the people of Nova Roma will
enjoy this strange piece of humor...at least I hope they do.

Salve, Audens.
I only have a little to add to this. And it comes from the Greco-Roman cross
over Religio, which some folks here wish to steer as clear of as they can, for
the valid sake of reconstructing the Roman Religio. But Cassia's list of
suggestions does take on some of the Hellenic aspects of Neptunus Poseidon.
Neptunus of the early Romans had as little to do with the seas as the Romans
did. As with the Romans themselves, this changed and Neptune has added the seas
to his realm. With the Hellenic religio the ship itself was under the
protection of another tutelary deity. It was Pallas Athene who gave the ship to
mankind. And remember that Athena was the patroness of that wily old salt
Odysseus Ulysses. I am sure that this aspect of the Goddess was passed on to
the Romans as were other attributes of various deities who were revered
throughout the Mediterranean world.
I most often see Minerva only talked about here in her aspects as a goddess of
arts and crafts, etc. We must remember that the Romans depicted her armed and
armored. The works of Homer were works that spoke of their gods as well as
those of the Hellenes. The Etruscans, who were the conduit for much of the
Hellenic theology for the whole of Italy, have artwork showing Menrva and
Nethuns (Athene Minerva and Poseidon Neptunus) together. And there is a
particularly beautiful sculpture (terracotta) that shows Minerva not only
succored Odysseus Ulysses in his trials, it shows a standing Menrva giving a
seated Herkle water to drink. Herakles Herkle Hercules built some walls in his
time, and he was a sailor on occasion too.
Just for the fun of it I'll end with a slightly butchered Homeric hymn to Athene
(Thelma Sargent trans.)
I sing of Athena Minerva, the city's protectress,
Awesome, and jointly with Mars attendant on matters of warfare--
The plunder of cities, the loud battle shout, and the fighting--
Who keeps safe from all harm the host going forth and returning from combat.
Hail, Goddess, and grant us happiness and good fortune!

Hailsa Ericius et Salvete Omnes!
I found your posting to be of great use to me. I believe this information is why I
have looked to Minerva to be my Patroness amongst the Olympians, alongside Diana,
Apollo and Vulcan.

Salvete,
The Temple of Ceres on the Aventine was mentioned by a number of Roman authors
and its general design and appearance is fairly well established. The Temple
was built in the Etruscan style, with widely spaced Tuscan columns, and a wide
roof with overhanging eaves. The roof was decorated with terra cotta statues.
The whole building was probably brightly painted. In addition to its great
social and political importance, the Temple was famous for its art collection.
The Temple would have looked very much like the original Capitoline Temple of
Jupiter, but not as big. It was originally dedicated in 493 bce, refurbished
many times, and burned in 31 bce. It was rebuilt by Augustus, and is listed
in the regionary catalogs of the fourth century ce. It was demolished by Pope
Hadrian I sometime after 772 ce, to prevent it from collapsing on a nearby
church. The general location of the building is known, but little or nothing
has survived. The remains of a temple podium beneath the church of S. Maria
in Cosmedin are alleged to belong to the Temple of Ceres, but there is no
proof of this. The podium measures about 32 by 22 meters. This might not be
the Temple of Ceres, but it must have been located quite near this spot, and
there is no other surviving evidence.

Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus

Look on the Gods page of the website. There are lots of lesser-known gods whose areas are very specific.

Your proposal of a Capitol / Meeting Place for NovaRoma
in the Philadelphia / NJ area sounds good to me.
It could be rather central to many citizens of NR.
Legio XXIV stands ready to offer any needed defense and
crowd control that may be needed.
Megus, we are apparently neighbors. May I hear from you
privately as to where you live and could we get together
somewhere ?

With the current and past discussions on the costs of
administering to the needs of NovaRoma,
I have wondered why no proposal for Annual Dues has been
put forth.
Every organization, be it a nation, county, city, town,
VFW, Fraternity, Boy Scout Troop or Club needs to have
a dependable and ongoing source of revenue ( tax, assessment,
dues, fee ) to cover the costs of running the organization.
NR is no different. I would propose that Annual Dues of
$10.00 to $20.00 ? be assessed, which would cover the cost
of the Eagle being sent to all Citizens in good standing and
should also allow some excess funds to be allotted to the other
ongoing expenses and future plans of the NovaRoma Nation.
Should Patricians perhaps pay more ? (Only one stone at a
time thrown my way, Please)
We already live in a nation of deficit spending. There is no
free lunch. If its free to you, then someone else is surely
paying for it ! . . . just as you are going to pay for someone
else's lunch, sometime, somewhere.
Let's get ourselves on a firm financial foundation.
We ALL must SHARE and CARRY the load.
Respectfully submitted for SERIOUS consideration,
we of Legio XXIV remain,

responding to.
You have only said what many have said before you.

While the meeting area all of you people have been talking about probably will
be in The East, please do no say it will be central. Of course it could be
pointed out that "to many citizens"
is not saying to all. Granted. But a meeting place CLVI Stadia NE of Oklahoma
City would also
be "central to many citizens of NR". We Nova Roma citizens in the West of
N.Amer. often
have to deal with the "Distant Cousin" syndrome. Usually the West starts at the
Mississippi,
quite often in Nova Roma it seems to start at the Appalachians.
Come to think of it, wee might be able to get some cheap land in the
Oklahoma-Kansas-Missouri area.
Maybe even on a river with four to seven hills or so.
Valete.
