Salve Patricia,
I don't think that there are any Roman or Italian deities that are directly
connected with cats. However - the cat is the totem animal of the Egyptian
goddess Bast, and Bast was often identified with the Greek Aphrodite and the
Roman Venus - so there is a tenuous connection with Venus. My own experience
with cats shows them to be sensuous and loving creatures, and if one considers
Venus as the goddess of love and pleasure - perhaps the connection is not so
tenuous after all.

Salve,
I've found an association of cats with Diana. Later on in Italian paganism
she is associated with cats due to her taking the form of a cat to seduce
her consort, Dianus, who had a cat he adored that was actually a faery.
Diana, being Queen of the Fae, switched with the faery cat that slept in
the bed of Dianus every night. This is not a part of the mythology of the
Roman Republic but much later.

What's wrong with your kitty? My thoughts are with you, as I adore cats
myself.

Vale and Bright Blessings,
Orbianna

Salvete Romani! (spelled backwards is 'In amor'...!)

I found this on the TogaTees Web site [www.togatees.com/]...check it
out, maybe we can recruit Holly for the Ordo Equester or at least bring
her some business!! (I have a couple of her Latin-phrase
T-shirts--they're very durable and *awesome*!

(It's to Venus, guys...and it's *singable*!)
===========================
This spring song of love, whose tune was appropriated for "Good King
Wenceslaus" in the mid-nineteenth century, also goes well with
Valentine's Day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tempus adest floridum, surgunt namque flores.
Vernales mox in omnibus iam mutantur mores.
Hoc quod frigus laeserat, reparant calores,
Cernimus hoc fieri per multos colores.
Stant prata plena floribus in quibus nos ludamus,
Virgines cum clericis simul procedamus,
Per amorem Veneris ludum faciamus,
Ceteris virginibus ut haec referamus.
Oh dilecta domina, cur sic alienaris?
An nescis, o carissima, quid sic adamaris?
Si tu esses Helena, vellem esse Paris,
Tamen potest fieri noster amor talis.
===========================
Now get out there and PURSUE SOME HAPPINESS!!!
Salvete, Fannius et alii!
>Has anyone heard or been to Xanten or Kempten (archeological parks)?
A friend of mine went a couple of years ago to Xanten...a pristine,
museum-piece looking thing it was, he said, and the 'feel' of it so
soul-less and sterile that it was obvious the curators meant to keep it
that way... What a waste; what a shame. He said most of the
reconstructions in that part of the world are the same way; you could
hardly imagine anyone ever living at those sites, let alone gambling
and fighting and swearing, walking the walls, scrubbing latrines, or
falling in love and hearing about it from all the guys back at the
barracks.
I'd like to visit it anyway, if the opportunity presents itself; if
anyone else has been there and come away with a different impression,
I'd be happy to hear about it.
>P.S. Isn't it ironic how the enemies of Rome now harbor reconstruction
Yes, and that a Roman classicist is just about required to learn German
to get at so much of the influential scholarship; vae victis, I
suppose...
One problem I can see right off the bat is that it multiplies the number of sets
of books that must be kept. Stop and think of the Big problems that can come
from that. Most important though is that All of those books would have to be up
keep it. And not have people in the slammer.
Well actually the IRS never sees the books......Unless you are getting
audited....always wait for the letter...and JUST answer what the letter is
questioning. And, if you are giving something to the IRS, make it as disorganized
as possible. The books are something only the partners or Business owners see.
Thats it. So the books are really the problem execpt deciding if we are going to be
a cash basis or accural basis reporting. :)
My Nova Roma friends, I understand that this is the weekend that a Roman
pays respects to his ancestors, and I guess if I can't do that properly,
I can't be much of a Roman, so I will try this public ceremony. As all
of you know while I do not worship the Gods of Rome I have sworn to
respect them and to render to them the respect that they deserve within
their world. I do not have an indoor altar and I am informed that an
outdoor altar is really not appropreate for this ceremony, so I have
chosen this electronic net as the altar for my ancestors for this year
1999, and perhaps I will learn he proper way of doing things by next
year.
I invite all your comments to this ceremony, and I pledge that I will
listen carefully and closely to all such.
First I would like to mention my appreciation to the following Citizens
who have helped me in this endeavor:
--Patricia Cassia;
--Lucius Equitius;
--F. Claudia;
--Q. Fabious;
--Anyone that I have forgotten please grant me your pardon and I thank
you as well!
======================================
Oh Gods of the Romans who look down upon your Eternal City and the
Provinces that extend from her boundaries provided by you to the Roman
People in Your Devine Wisdom, I Most Humbly come here before you as a
supplicant to ask for your recognition of one who long ago served you,
and whose dedication to duty and willingness to learn and apply his
skills for the greatness of Rome that you have in your Brilliance
Created and which has inspired myself to follow in his stead and his
lead to become a Student of Rome, and a Worker For Rome.
I ask Most Humbly that you accept these gifts of bread, fruit,
candleight and precious oils as a gift from the hands of the
Paterfamilius of Gens Minucia and grant my ancestors their lasting peace
and rest in the halls of the Gods of Rome.
While I cannot pledge my heart to you, Gods of Rome, I can pledge to you
my respect, wonder and the admiraion for the civilization that you have
created. I further pledge myself and my Gens to the learning of your
culture, your legends and your power, and having done so will always do
my best to spread that word as widely as is within my power as long as
life shall burn within my breast . All this my Gens pledges to your
magnificance in the honor that you provided to my ancestor of long ago
Marcus Minucius Audens and his ancestors before him. In particular, I
now with geat respect, list the specific Gods that it is my belief that
he (my ancestor) served during his lifetime:
-----The Legions of Rome--MARS;
-----Ships and the Sea--NEPTUNE;
-----Wine and Good Food--BACCUHUS;
-----Military Engineering--VESTA;
-----Military Cartography--MERCURIUS.
The Special Blessings of these individual gods I now ask in the name of
my adopted ancestor, his ancestors before him, and to all ancestors of
this line where-ever they may now be.
I now terminate this appeal to the Gods Of Rome with Utmost Respect and
with Boundless Admiration for their culture and heritage, and with the
Trust and Assurance that they will again come into their own in the
years to come.
Most Respectfully and Humbly;
Marcus Minucius Audens
Paterfamilius Gens Minucia
======================================
I thank all on the list for your patience with this interruption of your
normal list endeavors, and I wish you to know that I deeply appreciate
all of your efforts to help me along the Roman Way.
I still think $12 a year --$1.00 a month is where we should set
the dues fee if it's done. I don't think this amount would turn anyone
off that didn't want to be a part of Nova Roma to begin with. Higher
than that some people might turn away a little disgruntled allowing a
waver or not. We don't want to be greedy, we just want everything we do
have the funding available to us along with an infinite world of choices
that can be made. 1200 dollars per hundred citizens plus money raised
from investing in different products. We are not talking about huge sums
of money but just enough to get us by successfully.
Thinking about it the only waver there needs to be is a note instead
of a check stating "please waver me from payment this year" and then no
questions asked. Good enough?
