Dear Mr. Megas.
Happy 99 is a kind of virus (it's not exactely a virus) that brings you a
lot of trouble. There are a page here in Brazil that commentes what it does.
<a href="http://www.sti.com.br/links/028/happy99.htm" target="_top" >http://www.sti.com.br/links/028/happy99.htm</a>
I hope it can help.

Argh. Unfortunately I can't get it to you this weekend. I'll be in Delware
starting early tomorrow morning (I've got to leave by 7am from here).
Sunday I work. But I can have one to you early next week, even if it goes
into the April edition of the Eagle. Thanks for the opportunity :-)

Ave Gehn,
If you are refering to the "Happy 99" file, I did not send it and do not
execute the code. I have been informed that it is a computer "worm" not a
"virus." It scrambled some data on my machine, in my e-mail files, but
seemed to go away when I rebooted almost immediately. To see if you have
any affected files, I have been informed to search for files with SVA in the
name or extension: *.sva or SVA.*
Some prankster hacking, I suppose.

Oh My GODS!!!Imagine all of the Nova Roma List email getting sent to the corporate and
communist centers of Asia! It could be the end of civilization as they know it.
They'll think WE are the virus. Poor puppies.

Salve Venator...Salvete omnes:

Correction to my rushed attempt at Happy 99 tech support the other
night in Chat between customer calls:
The file names you want to look for are ska.* (files starting with
'ska') and *.ska (files with the extension 'ska'). For this reason the
Happy 99 family is also called 'SKA worms'.
Happy 99 does not sneak passwords to Asia (or anywhere else). What it
*does* do is modify your wsock32.dll file--your 'WinSock' or Windows
network socket, which is what lets a Windows system connect to the
Internet. Once yours has been tweaked, all your outgoing e-mail and
newsgroup postings will contain a piggyback copy of Happy 99. That's
all it does--tweaks your winsock and makes copies of itself whenever
you send something over the 'Net. It saves the original winsock as
WSOCK32.SKA and throws a couple of other files with SKA on there as
well (SKA.dll is what tells it to piggyback).
This only happens if you execute the attachment. You get a pretty
little fireworks display while it tweaks your winsock. Note that it's
looking for the file 'wsock32' to play with; this will only work on
Win95/98 and Windows NT (32-bit) systems. It does nothing on DOS,
Win3.x, or Mac systems. One more reason I'm glad I kept my retro
16-bit 386! My copy of Happy 99 is sittin' on the curb kickin' its
heels and wondering why it got exiled to some hick town on the Black
Sea coast...

>Some prankster hacking, I suppose.
Yup. Except REAL hackers don't write viruses. Or crash systems for
fun, or destroy data. They are systems explorers extraordinaire, and
you can't keep a secret from 'em (they hate locked doors), but they're
in it for curiosity's sake and for the brag-points--not to harm data or
the people who depend on it.

I thank you very much for your informative data about the subject item.
My son got his computer "infected" last night, because I sent it to him
to unzip (WebTV isn't too good at unzipping). He has a built-in
electronic sentry called "Bulldog" which has stopped the "worm" before
it got to the computer. He wanted to send it right back to the
perpetrator, but of course that was not Venator. He has been in
discussion with our friend who is on the Internet as a Moderator. By
now he should have the name of the originator. When he gets home, he
will ask my permission to "return fire" from a rather sophisticated
electronic armory. After determining that the target is none of my NR
friends, I will give the order to "Fire", with a great deal of pleasure
I might add!!
I do not care for "hackers" either their philosophy, or their actions.
They may appear as modern day "Robin Hoods" to some, but to me they are
under-diciplined children who should be severely switched and put to bed
without their supper.
