The Ides of March are also the day of the festivals of Jupiter and Anna Perenna.
Despite what the web calendar says, Anna Perenna was the female personification
of the year, usually shown as an old woman, some times as a young woman. This
calls to mind the Father Time image of contemporary new years rituals where the
old year is an old man and the new year is a baby. One way that Scullard
phrases it is that Anna Perenna signifies the continual succession of years
rather than only the beginning and end of the current years. The name can be
seen to intimate exactly this Anna Per-anna. Years Through Years. For those
people who might say that this does not scan one can remind them that the Romans
regularly had words that had been fused from sets of words. They are the people
who got Iuppiter from Iove Pater.
The Romans observed the festival of Anna Perenna both publicly and privately.
The public observance took the form of a day out in the country having picnics
and having fun. The priests, according to their own natures, probably took part
in this part of the observance after they had concluded the formal sacrifice and
public prayers for the health and success of the Republic in the coming year.
Yes. The Romans have squeezed in yet another new year celebration!

Thank you VERY much!!!!! Looks like I can get some answers out of you guys
after all <G>!!!!
As for the info on kids, I know their ain't much out there, but if anyone can
give me more than I got I'd be grateful!!
I DO have a book and the info already on the site. Turns out I have a hell of
a responsibility building this page, as it IS the only one of it's kind and
it's being researched by a uneducated historical idiot (your beloved author).
The site, at the moment has a link to NR on it, but I am considering taking it
off, for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that if the site
winds up sucking big time, I don't want to drag NR down with me.
The site is still not acessable (reasons for that too), but I'm working on it
(sort of).

My thanks for the compliment, Legate! That was the nicest thing--na,
take that back; it was the *only* nice thing--that has been said to me
or about me (that I know of) in this whole (very lousy) week.

Your delivery was perfect, Legate. I love serious newbies, and will
quite happily consent to be listed on your Mentors page. However, I am
not in the business of raising other people's children for them;
evidently your 'advert' has sent the last batch back home to their
mamas so that said parental figures can finish the job. Saved me and

There's been some discussion about limiting the number of postings on the list.
I don't agree with this. It's a place where Citizens can meet and discuss things, and if it takes a lot of postings, then that's a Citizen's
right. Of course,
we can all use some discretion in the number of posts we make. But let's not let interlopers "frighten" us into changing policies.
If you feel you're getting too many posts, the "digest" feature is handy. Or just delete the posts you know are from jerks. Life's too
short to read
posts from idiots! If you're in the Chat Room, use the "ignore" feature -- this one is wonderful! Jerks can rave on and you're
blissfully unaware of
them.

Nova Roma T-shirts and Commemorative Stamps! |
From: |
|

|
Salvete omnes,
I'm pleased to announce that Nova Roma now has two new items up for sale in
the Macellum section of our website!
Nova Roma is now offering two types of Iron-on transfers, great for T-shirts
and cloth banners for events, etc. The first transfer is the symbol from the
Nova Roma flag, an SPQR surrounded by a classical wreath. The second transfer
is a portrait of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, seated and holding an image of
Victory. Both fabric transfers are available in red, blue, purple, teal or
black.
We also now have available three types of commemorative stamps. The first
stamp has a wonderful image of a Roman civic building, surrounded by gardens
and topped with deity statues. The second stamp is the symbol from the Nova
Roma flag. The third stamp is the top from a Roman Eagle standard, showing an
eagle perched on top of a lightning bolt, over an SPQR symbol.
Please visit the Macellum to see images of these new items. Remember, 100% of
the profits on the sale of these official Nova Roma items goes to the
treasury. Now you can help support Nova Roma and get great stuff in return!
Valete,
Marcus Cassius Julianus

I agree with F.Claudia, at times we have many different threads going on at the same time. And, having post restrictions would tend to limit
our interaction with our citizens who do not go into the Taverna. For many of our citizens, this is their only way of staying in touch with the
community as a whole.
The separations of lists have elevated many of the posts into categories that are appropriate, such as Religion, and Humor. But, the NR main is
just that, the main list that we all use to keep in touch.
And, I completely agree with F.Claudia in terms of the digest. If you are getting too much e-mail, the digest is a very good alternative. :)

A&E had an interesting item on burial customs.
The volcanic ash in the soil around Pompeii tends to mummify bodies, so people there are buried without coffins. In about 18 months, they're dug
up, fully mummified, and placed in a vault, apparently with the mourners present. (kind of grim, though.) According to A&E, this custom is
unchanged since Roman times.
Naturally, they had full video of this grisly scene plus one even more grotesque of Tibetan bodies being eaten by vultures (a traditional rite) and
naturally they showed it right at dinnertime. A&E is one of the best diet-aids around.

This is the web calender I meant:

No promises. I'll see what I can do. I had just posted to the list something I
was writing for a friend. Mostly it is adapted from Scullard. Like I said,
Cassia, I'll see what I can do.
