Well....I don't think he was Italian...but he wan't Irish that's for
certain...

Yes, somewhere in England or Scotland, and he was sold as a slave, and he
eventually ran away, and went back to England, taking holy orders.

Around 450, I think.

About as long as some of these Northern Irish morons we know who claim he was
Protestant! lol. When you're married to a man from County Down you hear all
sorts of strange things....

Salvete civis

I'd like you to know that yesterday, March 17, as Aedile Plebis I've made an
incense offering to Liber and Libera, asking for their blessing upon Nova
Roma.

And I shared a bottle of wine with Bacchus and allowed myself to fall asleep
at His altar. What a feeling waking up 4 hours later with the candle burned
out and an empty wine bottle in my hand. Wish I could remember the dreams!

Salve, omnes!!

I saw something interesting yesterday. It was a ref to a Vietnamese
condiment called 'nuoc maum' (I think). It was described as "...a
fermented fish sauce... probably similar to Roman garum sauce...."

So...does any one have any experience with Vietnamese food?

Valete,

Gneaus Marius Asiaticus

Yes. I got some of the good stuff $2.50 for 255 ml.. Cheaper was same price for
twice the amount. Nouc Mam is also a brand name. I got "Thai Kitchen" Fish
sauce. Same stuff. I think Venator went into the making of both nuoc mam and
garum in detail. They are done the same, except the Romans use pots and the
SEAsians traditionally use bamboo baskets. (Lots of bamboo in SEAsia.)

It is salty. Slight fish odor. I put it on space food salisbury steak (2-3
shakes) and the smell and taste was lost, just a bit more salty. Of course
Apicius calls for using the whole bottle. I don't have any SEAsian recipes for
it yet. Maybe it all got that far east via one of Crassus's legions.

Ericius.

Salvete,

If you go to the Alta Vista search engine, they have a free service called
Babel Fish. Just type the URL in, and it will translate the site into English
for you! :) The translation won't be perfect, (in fact, it'll be often
downright funny) but at least you'll be able to get the gist of the written
stuff.

As far as my studies into the Roman past go in Roman Briton go, this is
what I found:

Succatus Patricius was a Briton with some Roman blood a couple
generations back. There are copies of church documents from the times
addressing him by his Briton name of Sucat. He was captured during an
Irish raid on the British when he was a teen. As far asw can be
determined, he was probably from Dumnonia aka Cornwall. And as far as
can be traced this was sometime in the mid 4th century.

Hope that helps...

Vale
