What's in a Name? |
From: |

Salvete omnes.
Non-Novaromani (i.e. "real") life has made it impossible for me to take
part in the discussion on this topic for the past few days. This has been
all to the good, since it has given me more time to reflect, and as the
discussion has evolved, it has also given me more upon which to reflect.
What's in a name?
The statement that most sticks with me is Crys's: "I feel the same about the
term 'Pagan' as I do about the 'N' word."
This statement has power. Why? Because the "N" word has power.
Let us consider the etymological evolution of the African American.
I suppose it is well known that the word "nigger" appears in the works of
Mark Twain, and that for this reason there have been moves to ban those
works from public schools. But after all, Mark Twain wrote a century ago,
and the meanings of words change.
What's in a name?
My 1955 Webster's Unabridged lists the following definitions for "nigger":
<I>n.</I> [earlier <I>neger</I>; Fr. <I>negre</I>; Sp. <I>negro</I>. black,
Black person]
1. a Negro
2. a member of any dark-skinned people
A vulgar, offensive term of hostility and contempt, as used by Negrophobes
In this nearly 50-year-old definition, the offensiveness of this term reads
like an afterthought! At the same time, it must be noted that "nigger"
started out as a simple corruption of the Spanish "negro".
What's in a name?
Nowadays, even the term "negro" is shocking to the ear, as is the term
"colored". These words fell out of favor as the Jim Crow laws were repealed.
What's in a name?
In their place rose the preferred term "black". "Afro-American" had a brief
run of being hip in the Psychodelic Era, then resurfaced in the last decade
in the form "African American".
What's in a name?
Malcolm X often used the word "nigger", precisely because of its power,
because of its very ugliness. In contrast, Jesse Jackson was one of the
earliest proponents of the term "African American", because it is uplifting
and empowering.
Two heroes, with very different styles.
An interesting question is, were there the analogs of Malcolm X and Jesse
Jackson in a Pagan/Polytheist Rights Movement, how many of us would be
attracted to one more so than to the other?
What's in a name?
It should be obvious that to arrogate a pejorative invites confrontation,
even if unintentionally. What each of us calls herself/himself is a private
decision. However, I assert that how our organization defines itself is
very much a matter of public policy. Are we better served by saying to
Christendom in particular, "We're still here, and we're in your face!" Or
are we better served by saying to the world as a whole, "This is who we are."
May the Gods preserve the Senate and People of Nova Roma.
Vale.

Salvete, Quaestrix Patricia Cassia, et Omnes.
I revised <magistrates.html> and <provinciae.html> to reflect the new
latinized provincial names. Also, the latter document includes two new
maps, one for America Septentrionalis and one for Europa.
The links to the German and Italian versions in <constitution.html> were
inoperative due to spelling errors. I corrected the links; however, these
translations are incomplete. I ask whoever has complete translations (in
these and other languages) to send them to me for incorporation into the
Nova Roma web site.

Salve Marcus Martianus
You present what I think is a very intelligent and reasoned argument. I
think that this issue is, unfortunately, more a matter of feelings than
of reason. Also, I think that there are some citizens who very much DO
want to flaunt the word PAGAN in others' faces.
Reason rarely prevails where passions are already entrenched.

Why the concern for how we are portrayed to christendom? We are not here for
christendom. We are here for us and for others who would share our beliefs
and affiliations.

Salvete omnes,
Gangalius presented a very cogent argument regarding the quote below which I,
however, have a different take on.
<<The statement that most sticks with me is Crys's: "I feel the same about the
term 'Pagan' as I do about the 'N' word.">>
I am genuinely sorry for Crys that she feels this way, as I do not share her
view on the term pagan. For me, it is a valid description of my personal
faith path. I have never, in fact, felt anything but a quiet sense of
dignity when I hear the term pagan used. Are there those who use it as a
slur? Certainly! However, there are those who can, and do, attempt to use
just about any given *label* as a slur. Part of that whole "if you aren't
one of *us* you must inherently be bad" thought process that I am sadly aware
of in our society today. The fact that some choose to use pagan as a slur
does not mitigate the fact that my path of faith is pagan.
Sergius added to the debate:
<>
::shrug:: Perhaps there are. I, however, can speak as a pagan who does not
seek to *flaunt* my faith in anyone's face. I do not wear black robes a la
Laurie Cabot, I do not wander the streets draped in pentacles and crystals,
nor do I spend time on the steps of churches and synagogues in a attempt to
*flaunt* my faith. In point of fact, the vast majority of pagans I asociate
with look, speak and act just like every other person.
Do I support the change from *pagan* to *polythesistic* in our nation? No I
do not. Do I make this statement in an attempt to rile the Christians?
Flaunt my faith? Irritate the masses? LOL Most assuredly not. I believe
the argument has already been made quite well (forgive me...I cannot remember
by whom off hand) that the correct technical term we should use if pagan.
For those who have personal issues with the word, I sincerley hope you come
to terms with those issues regardless of the decision regarding terminology
in Nova Roma. In the meantime, I will maintain my pagan faith and do so with
a clear conscience.
Vale,
Priscilla Vedia Serena

Salvete,
I didn't THINK I was crazy!! Here's what I SAID!!!
In a message dated 99-04-07 08:36:09 EDT, I wrote:
> When asked my religion before Lapis was born, I put down 'Religio Romana' (

I am not in the habit of caring what people call me. That's one of the
quickest ways (in the world I come from) of winding up dead!
I can take a word, any word, and put so much poison in it that it will hurt
the person I am speaking to. Words will never hurt me, but the power of the
voice might (if I let it).
Crys (ya'll had me thinkin I was losin it!!)

Thank you for the Welcome Message. I was wondering if you could send
me (by snail-mail) a map of Ancient Rome? Also can you send me a list
of some of the more important buildings of ancient Rome & their purpose?
What are the most important festivals of ancient Rome?
Last of all, where can I purchase miniature statues of the major
Roman Gods & Goddesses?
