Salvete, Quiriti!

Sabinus was inspired to offer this:

> Since no one else on the list has mentioned
>Flora today, I will offer you a meditation on the coming of the goddess.
>Behold, Flora comes, the goddess of a thousand flowers, lady of a thousand
>blossoms.
>Crocus and hyacinth spring forth at each step.
>Her radiance is like a sunflower,
>Like golden yellow marigolds and chrysanthemums shining in the sun.
>Her touch is like the coolness of peony petals and tulips.
>She brings the fragrance of violet and rose,
>Of lilac, lavender, and lily.
>She dances in the dark greenness of the forest and woodland depths,
>And in the bright sunlight of flower filled meadows.
>She is the goddess of flowers.
>She causes all things to grow, and blossom, and flourish.
>The goddess comes, Flora, dressed in garlands of a thousand flowers.
>Celebrate spring, the season of flowers, the season of growth and new
>beginnings.
>Decorate your home and altar with flowers and garlands.
>Burn floral scented candles and incense.
>Wear a floral crown, and adorn your body with scented oils and colored robes.
>Dance and make love in the cool darkness of spring nights,
>And in the sparkling sunshine of spring days.
>Crocus and lily.
>Narcissus and hyacinth.
>Iris and daisy.
>Oleander and myrtle.
>Violets and roses.
>Green leaves and pink petals against ivory skin.
>White and gold against bronze.
>Flora, great one !
>She comes !
>She is here !
>
>Valete,
>Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus

- Gratias ago, Sabine! I too would like to pay my respects to Her in a similar way. This is adapted from Ovid's 'Fasti':

De, Flora, tetricis non es; non es de magna professis;
Voles tua plebeio sacra patere choro,
Et mones aetatis specie, dum floreat, uti;
Contemni spinam, cum rosae cecideri.

(very loose translation):

You, Flora, are no stern, forbidding goddess;
You wish you rites open to all people,
And caution us, to savour life's rose's sweetness,
Lest all too soon the petals fall, and we be left with naught but thorns.

Io Floralia!

Vado.

I love the idea of people getting together in the
provinces as has recently been discussed but I think there's also a few
issues that need to be addressed by everyone in Nova Roma as a priority.
I would like some feedback.

I think that right now Nova Roma is at a very critical point in its
existence. I believe that it will last from this point onward long-term
but in what context remains to be seen. I believe that we can either be
a dynamic and growing community or make a little progress here and there
but for the most part begin to stagnate. I'll try to explain...

For the most part, the world as a whole has not a clue that we
even exist. The only way that we can remedy that in a way beneficial to
us is through advertisement of sorts which costs money generally in
various degrees. We have a good, solid base of information available to
the public as to who we are and about just about everything under the
sun that could be considered Roman. I think it's about time we take a
step forward and try doing things that will promote our micronation by
finding like minded people out there who can benefit Nova Roma and in
return benefit them the same ways we are all benefitted by belonging to
this micronational/religious/historical/etc/etc/ community.

I think right now we need to overcome a few problems/challenges in
order to do this effectively. We talked here in the past of having more
than one advertising flyer out and as far as I know nothing ever got
voted on or even created---did it???I think it's important because
different flyers could be more effective in different places---- and
through experimentation we can find something that really works well for
us perhaps better than the current flyer in a majority of places---
either in content, color, or design. I also wonder if we could have a
banner from our flag as was once discussed to be a promotion for us on
other websights???

We also have a problem perhaps with funding for advertisement.
It's expensive!!! Can we have the budget passed soon to be able to have
money alloted for advertisement costs for localities and nationally so
that we can start establishing real communities one day in our provinces
that are not exclusively online---( particularly in the Great Lakes
Province-lol).
Perhaps raising the rates immediately on the Eagle to more sustainable
rates would help provide us with some surpluses in funds that can be
used for this purpose.

We also need to plan on how/where to advertise. Locally in the
Great Lake Province for example I would like to comprise a listing of
all newsletters, magazines, bookstores, organizationa, and groups that
could provide us with a forum to advertise Nova Roma in which can be
used at any time for further reference. I would also like to volunteer
my time to compile such a list for the betterment of Nova Roma from any
geographical location as others or I run across this information and
then forward the info directly to the censors and senate which seemingly
handle all incoming informational documentation relating to Nova Roma.

Furthermore, I think it would be beneficial for all the
consuls/praetors/propraetors/other magistrates and any other interested
citizens to get together forming this list of pagan friendly bookstores,
historical societies, websites, reenactor lterature, etc.etc.etc.
together and help in the strategic use of advertisement and promoting
Nova Roma and discuss which places to advertise and exactly how--- like
flyer insert or short written article or banner ad on a website, etc, etc.
I would like to be a part of such a project and be endorsing the better
interests of the Great Lake Province in the process. I think that
without something being done to this general end we will not ever see
Nova Roma going from an internet community to a mostly locality based
community organization. The possibilitiesf or Nova Roma given some
proper planning can be endless

My question to be put across everyone here is if you would
really like to see Nova Roma as a dynamic entity or is everyone happy
with Nova Romas' existence as is???????

GDD I love the idea of people getting together in the
provinces as has recently been discussed but I think there's also a few
issues that need to be addressed by everyone in Nova Roma as a priority.
I would like some feedback.

GMM-OK, I'll try.

GDD- For the most part, the world as a whole has not a clue that we
even exist.

GMM-True, but we do have a good website that is accessible to people all
over the world.

GDD-The only way that we can remedy that in a way beneficial to
us is through advertisement of sorts which costs money generally in
various degrees.

GMM-I have talked to a couple of people about Nova Roma and perhaps one of
them will join. This avenue too should not be overlooked.

GDD- I think right now we need to overcome a few problems/challenges in
order to do this effectively. We talked here in the past of having more
than one advertising flyer out and as far as I know nothing ever got
voted on or even created---did it???

GMM-Flyers are good.

GDD-I also wonder if we could have a
banner from our flag as was once discussed to be a promotion for us on
other websights???

GMM-Sounds like a good idea.

GDD-Perhaps raising the rates immediately on the Eagle to more sustainable
rates would help provide us with some surpluses in funds that can be
used for this purpose.

GMM-I know that this has been suggested several times already, by me and
other people. I am sure that the Senate is deliberating on it, but of
course I have no idea what the senators see as merits or problems as far as
raising the Eagle's subscription rate is concerned.

GDD- We also need to plan on how/where to advertise.

GMM-Sounds good. I wish that I could think of some publication in which to
advertise us, but I honestly cannot off the top of my head (more on that
later).

GDD- Furthermore, I think it would be beneficial for all the
consuls/praetors/propraetors/other magistrates and any other interested
citizens to get together forming this list of pagan friendly bookstores,
historical societies, websites, reenactor lterature, etc.etc.etc.

GMM-Again, I don't know of a single bookstore that I would describe as
"pagan friendly".

GDD-
I would like to be a part of such a project and be endorsing the better
interests of the Great Lake Province in the process. I think that
without something being done to this general end we will not ever see
Nova Roma going from an internet community to a mostly locality based
community organization. The possibilitiesf or Nova Roma given some
proper planning can be endless

GMM-I think that it does have potential to grow, but that its growth in
terms of number of citizens, and also consequentially in terms of budget,
will be fairly slow no matter what any of us does. Especially given the
realities of medieval and modern history, and the prevalence of monotheism
(seconded only by atheistic materialism) throughout most of the world, the
like-minded people are a minority. I don't mean to say that you have to
practice Religio Romana to be a civis, I understand that and that's fine;
but Nova Roma is what it is, a micronation dedicated to re-building Roman
culture, especially Religio Romana, and acting as a catalyst for the spread
of Roman culture throughout the world (my own interpretation may be a little
different from yours or someone else's, but you know what I'm saying).

It seems to me that a good question to ask would be, where would we find the
most like-minded people? I would say that college students would be a
particularly fertile population for growing Nova Roma. If that is true,
then campus newspapers, and other newspapers distributed on campuses, would
be logical choices in which to advertise us.

Consider that these newspapers have reasonable circulation, and their
readers are by and large members of a common group, students attending
particular colleges. To me, that makes these newspapers highly desirable as
advertising media.

Unfortunately, I have no experience or knowledge of how campus newspapers
work; I never wrote for one, worked for one, or advertised in one, and so I
don't know how advertising in them works. I suspect, based on my past
experience working at a university, that, at least in many cases, these
papers cannot advertise to anyone off the street; some kind of
faculty/staff board surely has to approve every article and every ad that
goes into the paper.

Another question, harder to answer: does anyone know of a specific campus
paper, anywhere in the world, where

a) the faculty/staff board contains/seems to contain people who are
"like-minded"?
b) there is no such board?

If we find either one, we should put a Nova Roma ad there right away.

And, in order to do that, we return to your question, Gaie Druse, of the
status of Nova Roma flyers, because the consuls, at a minimum I would think
, would have to approve the content of any advertisement in order for it
really to be a Nova Roma advertisement.

GDD My question to be put across everyone here is if you would
really like to see Nova Roma as a dynamic entity or is everyone happy
with Nova Romas' existence as is???????

GMM-I intend to stay and try to help, at least in my own small way, in any
case. I think that Nova Roma has done well so far; since she is important
to me, I see her every moment (as I suspect you and a lot of other people do
too) as a critical juncture. At the same time, I really do believe that
there are some fixed external limitations (see above).

Hiya folks,

Now, I hope you all realize that I am not one to bring up "mundane" issues
here, but I have to get something off my chest. As a middle-school teacher
you can *imagine* how much my thoughts and the thoughts of my students have
been on the growing violence in schools recently. It has been at the same
time tragic, insightful and uplifting to be able to deal on a daily basis
with young people and really have a chance to try and be a part of the
solution this country needs so badly.

Over the course of the week and a half we have talked a lot about empathy for
the victims and the shooters too. In theory, we have all tried to put
ourselves in the shoes of those involved. However, today the issue of school
violence truly hit home for me. I heard about the five 8th graders in Bay
Ridge Brooklyn arrested for an alleged plot to set a pipe bomb at the
graduation of McKinley Junior High School

Some background here: I grew up in Bay Ridge and lived there until last
June. I attended McKinley from 1982-1984. I attended the grammar school
across the street for the six years prior to that. I taught an afterschool
program at PS 170 for six years. PS 170 provides about 90% of the population
of McKinley. That means the chances are very good that I not only know the
children, but that I actually taught them and had a chance to make a
difference and yet it somehow slipped by me.

Please don't get me wrong. I know that these things DO just happen and that
no teacher can be all things to all students. I am not looking for sympathy
or to be told I did a good job. I have just been hit VERY hard by the fact
that school violence on the order of Colorado, Pearl and Jonesboro has landed
squarely at my feet. I am a NJ resident now, but I a sure you can all relate
to the idea that your heart is always in some small place in the area where
you grew up.

I guess all I wanted to ask is if you could, in whatever worship fashion you
choose, please send positive energy to our country. Take the time to smile
at a teen ager in the mall. I always prefaced my thoughts on school violence
with "well, we know it will never happen here but......." and now I have to
admit that ANYwhere this happens is "here" to someone.

I apologize for taking up list space with private concerns. I am just a bit
overwhelmed and my viewpoint has changed in the past 12 hours. I was
sympathetic and concerned, but now in a small way I am involved. These are
not random devil-teens from an anonymous town. These are kids I worked with,
laughed with, and hoped to somehow impact for the better. Thanks for reading
this and thanks even more for offering up any small prayers etc you can spare
for those involved.
