I just want say that I like the new look at the Website! And I am not
having any trouble with "scrolling". All the text fits in the frame.

Keep up the good work, Gangalius!

LOL!! It's neither a country, nor is it coffee. Java is a type of script
which allows moving banners to appear on a website. GeoCities uses Java for
the ads that pop up in little screens over their free web pages.

AOL often fails with Java, and I was wondering if this is the case with other
servers or systems out there. It's great to hear that AOL *can* be adjusted
so that it can see java, as has been mentioned here... but the important
thing is that the site should be visible to as many folks as possible who are
checking us out for the first time. We can't assume that people will take
time to adjust their systems just to see what Nova Roma has to offer.

Since I'm not the expert here I have no clue if I'm even on track with this,
but if Java were to fail, say, 20-25% of the people trying to view the site
(a completely arbitrary number I've just now made up) that'd be bad. We'd
surely see a corresponding drop in new Citizens if folks couldn't see the
site. Just thought it would make sense to see if anyone else out there has
java problems if they haven't made special adjustments to their system.

Marcus Cassius Julianus

Thanks Cassius for explaining it all. I'll drop in my local WebTV
distributor and ask after the information. That was a big help, thank
you very much!!

Salvete Marce Cassi et alii

I use Internet Explorer 4, which is very common these days. I usually have
no problem with Java scripts, but sometimes the scripts fail to execute. In
those cases, IE4 gives me a dialog box allowing me to ignore further Java
scripts on the web page. I then am able to view the rest of the page
normally, except in a few cases where the page contains multiple Java
scripts that fail; sometimes IE4 cannot load those pages for me at all.

For people using IE4 (a lot of people I guess), the sparing use of Java
should not pose a problem, even if there's an error in the script(s).

Avete Omnes, mea duo sesterces,

I use Netscape 4.something or other. Java works fine most of the time and
like IE4 gives me an error message, then usually drives on without the
Java. I would venture to guess that most browser version which are less
than one year old should have little or trouble with Java.

Hailsa Allir;

I just cruised to the NR site with AOL 4.0, which displayed a non-frames
version of the several pages I viewed. So, another browser which should
work fine.

Avete Omnes!

Here is a site that will translate things into Latin for you

<a href="http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/Latin/" target="_top" >http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/Latin/</a>

Not being even close to a scholar of Latin, I can't vouch for the site's
accuracy, but it seems a good start.

Why not offer two versions of the site? Perhaps have the index.html allow
the user a choice? Something as simple as the Nova Roma flag centered on the
page with two links below it "Java enabled version" (or something of the
sort) and "Non Java version". The page can also be made to time out and
refresh automatically to the non Java version (to be safe) if the user
doesn't choose something within so many seconds.
