Citizens!

The Gladiator Aureus Saltator, 22 kills a retiarius, has returned here for
three days. He demands a match. Who should we send against him?

Below are the Republic's challengers

Marcus Secator. 12 fights 7 kills
Flavis Secator. 7 fights 2 Kills
Lupus Thracian. 4 fights 4 Kills
Voluminos Hopomachus 20 fights 10 kills

Indicate your choice, then at 12 Noon PDT (3 PM EDT) on Sat. come
to the Arena if you dare! Watch the peoples' choice in action.
Then see how long he lasts!!

Of course, as you know, no one was talking about the ownership of the
website. We were talking about having a provision in the charter of a
sodalis that allowed for the election of officers. The original charter
that Crys presented had no officers at all, it was set up as a corporation
with her as the sole owner. With revisions, it started to look more like a
club or fellowship and less like a forum for, by, and of one person. I'm
sure that something could have been worked out in the charter of the group
that the website could have remained in her hands, subject to some
oversight by the rest of the group even when she stepped down as leader.

If all the Sod. pro Infant. was to be was a mere website then I would
agree. However, if other people than Crys were going participate, then
they should be allowed to participate fully. I know that I would not join
something that professed itself to be a fellowship but was really the
sole property of the owner. At some point the baby has to be allowed to
walk on its own. (yes I know, boo, hiss, bad pun) Perhaps what Crys had in
mind was more of an informational website without any other members. That
would have been fine but it would not have been a sodalis.

It's ironic. Usually the senate it seems is accused of being oligarchs and
now we are taken to task for insisting that a sodalis associated with Nova
Roma be more democratic and let its members be allowed to participate
fully in it. This is really the only oversight that the senate
has over a group--its creation. After it is formed it is on its own.

If Nova Roma had stayed the sole property of its founders, there would be
no room for it to grow. The elected officials, myself and Lucius Equitius
the senior of them for this year, run the show, website and all, for
better or worse. The trust was passed on to us and we intend to pass it
on, stronger we hope and with a fully functional government (yes with
comitiae and all), to whomever of you is elected to replace us. If this
can be done in Nova Roma, it certainly can be done in a sodalis.

In service to Rome,

If you were elected or appointed to a position of responsibility, then the
answer is yes. That is the nature of the game.

That's the risk you run when you are part of a community. One cannot
control everything at all times. You have to trust people and the system
put into place.

> The whole thing stunk of government, which I don't want for this society.

Somewhat of a contradiction isn't it? Society without governance? I
hate to point it out to you but the society as you formed it had a
government--*you.* So it indeed stunk of government to me as well...

I thought this group was for parents as well and not just children.
So, the pace of this group will be too fast to consult the masses within
it who will have rushed to join to not have a say in how it is run?
(forgive my run-on sentence) Like many among fortune's favorites, I think
that you are not giving people enough credit for being able to participate
wisely and make good choices.

I better end here. It will make too many people nervous to continue to see
a consul defend democratic principles. :)

Salvete cives

I, Antonius Gryllus Graecus, Aedilis Plebis am not able to preside at the
Games this Saturday, at 12 Noon PDT (3 PM EDT).
Quintus Fabius Maximus, honoured citizen of Nova Roma shall preside the
Games this Saturday in my place. Although he has no magistracy his work
setting up the Games is enough to make him deserve the honour.
I have chosen Voluminos Hopomachus to fight Aureus Saltator, for the
triumphs of both promise a very stubborn combat:

- Aureus Saltator, 22 kills, a retiarius (net and trident)
- Voluminos Hopomachus 20 fights 10 kills

Hope you enjoy the fight.

... And don't forget.. The Arena is located at:

Here's a site which may be of interest to the Religio or even Strega)
practitioners out there. This seems to be the whole book in on-line format.

Salvete

A week or so ago, someone said that they knew of a couple of colleges in the
Midwest US that probably had papers that would print NR advertisements. Is
that person still subscribed to this list?

If so, do you know the names/telephone numbers to call to find out how to do
this and how much it would cost?

Please post to the list or feel free to send me a private e-mail if you want
help.
