As part of my project of forming a Canadian Roman Legion I would like some
information on the following Legions:
Legio XII Fulminata
Legio IV Macedonica
Legio V Macedonica
Legio XI Apollinarus
Legio XX Rapax
Legio I Alaudae
Legio V Alaudae
Direct information, links to Web sites, or bibliographies are all very much
appreciated...
These appear to be legions not yet adopted by modern re-enactors. If any of
these are already in use please let me know. I also suspect some of these
fellows lost their Eagles making them less than popular with the modern
living history people :)
( like good old Legio XVII, XVIII and XIX in Teutoberger Wald )
Also, if there are Legions that I'm unaware of please let me know since I'm
still deep in the bowels of research...

I agree. I doubt that that's all Pagans. Though I did cast my vote on it. :)

I forgot the legion that I am most interested in:
Legio IV Flavia Firma founded around AD 69
This is the one I am leaning towards re-enacting so I would appreciate any
and all information. But anything legion related in the last half of the 1st
century AD is also welcome

Salve!
(Here's what I know, it may not be much, but it might help.)
<<
Legio XII Fulminata
Legio IV Macedonica
Legio V Macedonica
Legio XI Apollinarus
Legio XX Rapax
Legio I Alaudae
Legio V Alaudae
>>
XII Fulminata-This legion was most likely formed by Julius Caesar and served
with him in Gaul from their creation in 58bce to 49bce and was stationed in
Italy for most of 49bce. They were stationed in Pharsalus in 48bce but were
disbanded in 46-45bce. Probably in 44 or 43 they were reconstituted by Marcus
Lepidus, and served with Antony from 41-31bce in the eastern provinces. They
served in Syria during the late Augustan period but lost their eagles in
Judaea in 66. This legion had two other titles throughout its history,
Paterna and Antiqua. Their emblem was a thunderbolt.
IV Macedonia- This legion was also fromed by Gaius Iulius Caesar in 48bce.
They served in Macedonia from 47 to 44bce, and were then transferred to
Italy. They origionally sided with Antony but defected to Octavian at the
battle of Forum Gallorum. They were stationed at Mutina(43), Philippi(42),
Perusia(41), and possibly were at Actium in 31. They were then moved to Spain
were they stayed from 30bce to 43ce, and onto the Rhine frontier from 43 to
69ce.The legio had both a bull and a capricorn as emblems. The former showing
that it was formed by Iulius Caesar & the latter that it was reconstituted by
Augustus. They were disbanded in 70 & reformed as IV Flavia Felix.
V Macedonia- They were formed by either Pansa (in 43bce) or Octavian in 41 or
40. It was in Actium in 31 and spent 36 years (30bce-6ce) in Macedonia. Their
emblem was a bull, which USUALLY indicates it was formed by Iulius Caesar.
However, there was a legion with the same title which served with Antony
simultaneously.
V Alaudae- This was a legio formed by Iulius Caesar from native Gauls in
52bce, and they served with him in Gaul until 49bce. They then moved to
Spain(49), Pharsalus(48), Thapsus(46), and Munda(45). In 44 they were in
Italy & probably disbanded seeing how Antony reconstituted the legio the same
year. They were at the battle of Forum Gallorum and Mutina in 43 and Philippi
in 42. They served with Antony from 41-31 and were quite possibly at Actium.
They were incorporated into Octavians army in 30bce, and served in Spain
until they were moved to the Rhine frontier around 19bce, were they served
until 69ce. They may have been disbanded for dealing with Civilis, but its
also said that they were destroyed in the Balkans in 86ce. They were awarded
the emblem of an elephant in 46bce for their gallantry and success against
charging elephants in the Battle of Thapsus.
That's all that I could come up with, hope I could be of assistance.
Respectfully,
Gnaeus Tarquinius Caesar

A good book on this, and the one I usually pull off the shelf for thumbnail sketches of
the Legions "regimental" histories, is Lawrence Keppie's _The Making of the Roman Army
