- Undoubtedly.
>What about a "classical values movement" created by Nova Roma,
- Religio Romana (as influenced by Greek pagan religious thought) underpins
classical values. Like all other pagan religions, as far as I'm aware, it
never had a missionary ethos. It was, and is, tolerant, live-and-let-live.
That's why it appeals to me. In more secular (non-religious terms), I think
Nova Roma has already achieved what you suggest, insofar as it is possible
to do so (I mean, nobody in 14thC. Florence suddenly decided to invent the
Renaissance).
>with LARGE numbers of people taking up the roman virtues and >some of the
>roman ways, etc.
-For myself, I do what I can to promote the Via Romana within the Pagan
Federation in Britain (open rituals, lectures, magazine articles etc.) and
while it's raised awareness of Roman paganism and what it's really about,
and people are appreciative, I haven't exactly been swamped with enquiries.
Anyway, I believe the gods prefer quality to quantity. Size isn't
everything, y'know. :-D.
>Could be a "nation within a nation" and at some point in the future grow
>independant of other nations into its own nation. Just a thought.
- Could be, yes. This is Nova Roma you're talking about, already. Having
said that, 'humans propose, the gods dispose'...
>Note on the previous email, whole point is the large numbers thing. >And
>it wouldnt be just online...and of course wouldnt deal with >paganism as a
>main part, and wouldnt necessarily focus on Rome, >etc.
-Large numbers again! Yes, it would be gratifying, but long-term. You have
only to look at what kind of large movements attract huge numbers of
followers overnight (and I think, by and large, whatever kind of person
joins NR, followers is something they're not.) to see what sort of a mixed
blessing a sudden big influx of members might be. If you sideline the pagan
religious aspect, where are the 'Classical Values' to come from? The
Graeco-Roman philosophers? To my mind, they don't constitute a corpus of
values - Seneca and Epicurus cancel each other out, for example. Classical
Early Christianity is not even going to appeal to many Christians, never
mind anybody else. What does that leave? And if Rome isn't to be the focus
(nice word, 'focus', makes me think of the Temple of Vesta as the family
hearth of the Empire), then won't it end up as the equivalent of a
federation of Hellenistic city-states? (and we know how cohesive they were)!
-No, frankly, if NovaRoma turns into, or aligns itself with, some kind of
righteous Moral Majority, I'm OUT. Well, that's my dupondius' worth.
Valete,
Vado.

What I meant by classical values was the Roman Virtues, which dont
necessarily need gods included, the gods are just a plus. Or we could use
Greek Arete which is basically the same thing.
You said if it turns into a moral majority you're out...uh these dont
necessarily mean that you are moral. Just means honorable.
I'm sorry guys I'm just trying to give suggestions here. Heres another:
"DONT call yourself a sovereign nation". Lets face it, NR as is isnt
remotely close to one and isnt really trying to be. So unless theres quite a
few people who start trying to make NR a nation I really think that whole sov
nation thing should be Xed.

Salve: Your temple to Jupiter Optimus Maximus is greatly appreciated. Just a
small comment. The enterior of Roman temples such as Jupiter's held for the
most part only the statue of the god or goddess. The actual alter was
outside in the open air in front of the temple. Other than this I think your
efforts are really great. (I'd be the first to admit that I can be picky).
There is already a temple to Mars on the web with links to Nova Roma.
However I am sure that we could use temples to Apollo, Diana, Minerva, and
of course Bacchus. A suggestion: Would it be possible for the temple of
Jupiter to be for all three of the Capitoline Triad? Jupiter, Juno, and
Minerva? This would be a virtual copy of the great temple on the Capitoline
hill in Ancient Rome. Thanks for your efforts, and may Fortuna smile upon
your work. Vale:...Appius Marcellus Cato

An old question so far as the Nova Roma list goes...
Who is this person? An email address handle is not a name. Be it Roman name of handle be
it Ericius or Highflyer. Do we call you Exitil? Could you please sign your messages as a
form of actually putting your name to them?

Salve.
Thank you for your ideas on the temple. I had planned on the temple evolving
into a temple to Jupiter and as many of the Olympians as i could work into it.
thing is i work 70 hours a week and i am a free lance cartooninst and then am a
martial artist who practices about 20 hours a week, soit is slow going. I will
add at least Juno and Minerva, with small shrines to other gods. I just had to
have a starting point somewhere. as for the lay out, i wanted a good greeting
page, that is why it is sort of backwards from the old temples (statue outside,
then the altar)
thank you for bringing these points up.
