Renato,
Thankyou for replying. I hope you stay around on this list. Be aware though,
that sisnce most of the folks here are Polytheistic, folks tend to be a bit
sensitive to attacks from the mainstream, even if unintended.

The comment you made about people believing in the religion of their culture
would find support in many parts of the Pagan community. These are the
original ethnic faiths.

Best, Pythia

May I introduce myself.

I am Gaius Cornelius Mamertinius. aka Don Meaker. I think that
Cassius should be putting me on the membership roles soon. (My
Nova Roma
thanks Cassius for your early attention to this.)

I became acquainted with Nova Roma through Crystallina (Crys),
and am honored to be the Pater of the firstborn Nova Roman,
Marcus Iunius Posterius (Lapis). I immediately thought that it
would be an interesting group to join. I see three threads here, with
some more interested in one or another.

Religio Romana thread. I am interested here. I have attended a
conventional religious school, but too much scholarship led to its
pagan antecedents. I would like to continue that study.

Re-enacting thread. I am interested here, but am beginning from
scratch. It will be slow.

Historical/Literary Thread. I am interested here, and have just
bought a copy of the Aeneid (1908 english translation). I have long
been interested in Roman military art, from Pre- Camillus to the
defense of Constantinople against the Turks.

Yours,

Gaius Cornelius Mamertinius.
aka Don Meaker.

Roman, let this be your care, your art: To beat down the proud, and teach the ways of peace.

What's so strange about it? Why a catholic should not be a Socialist? In Italy
we do not mix religion and politics, and Socialist Party is considered just a
normal party like Democrats and Republicans in America, without any particular
religious implication. It is also part of the coalition that governs this
country.
And if you really think about it, Socialism and Catholicism have a lot of
things in common.

Well, as you probably know the legend says that King Romolo founded Rome on
April 21th, 753 BC. This day is celebrated moslty with cultural events and
with some special events at Capitol with Mayor and authorities, it is not
the same every year. For instance, a celebration that I thought was very
nice was a couple of years ago: Mayor Rutelli invited all Mayors of cities
called Rome all over the world. (There are plenty of towns called Rome in
the world: many of them are in USA (there is one in Georgia for instance)).
However a site that I strogly suggest you to visit, is the official home
page of the Imperial Forums: I am sure you all Novaroma inhabitants will
love it.

I've looking around for translated roman works on amazon.com and the NR
bookstore. The NR bookstore doesn't have much selection of ancient roman
works. I was hoping someone could offer some recommendations for my first
classics and also offer some info on how to find the best translations.
Also, is the Penguin Classics series any good? I've seen a lot of them on
amazon.com.

Salvete, Lucius Fannius et alii

I believe that there is a proposal to begin by reading Caesar Gallic wars as
part of forming a Sodalitas Litterarum, so this would be a great book to get
from the Loeb Classic Library at
<a href="http://gopher.hup.harvard.edu/Web_Loeb/Loeb.home.page.html" target="_top" >http://gopher.hup.harvard.edu/Web_Loeb/Loeb.home.page.html</a>
these are great because you get both the Latin and english translation on
facing pages. These are a little 'pricy' $18 to $20 each, but they are
treasures to be kept and passed down the generations.
These can be ordered from Amazon.com but if you want to help Nova Roma get a
portio-------- the procedes co--------t the webmaster <a href="/post/--------roma?protectID=125056250165056031072218066036129208" >webteam@--------</a> to set
it up on the site. I ordered my copy of Virgil's Aeneid pt.1(and other
books) this way.

Salve!
You want Loab translations. One page is in the language of the original
manuscript while the other is in English. Penguin Classics are in English.
So they are good for starting out, but there is no original language
translation. Even in the foot notes.
Vale!
