Yeah..well...she may have said that but its a sure bet no one would have believed
her. I don't buy this "Virginity wasn't virginity in the old days" business.

As far as the Vestal requirements for Nova Roma are concerned, celibacy, not
virginity is required.

Subject: The Vestalia
From:

Today is the Vestalia, the day that Vesta's round temple building was
cleaned. Vesta is very important to Rome, the state had public worship to
her (Vesta publica populi Romani) since she represented the family, a very
important part of the Roman Republic state. For without family, the building
block of the republic, where would Rome be? Today remember Vesta with a
prayer and maybe a little sacrifice. Without a Virgo Maxima, Rome needs to
invoke the goddess' favor as much as possible.

Do you think that maybe you might be able to stop repeating that phrase?
My term is up, but that doesn't mean I'm not still tending the flame and performing the rituals. Under the
terms of the charter, I'm still eligible to "re-enlist" if I choose. I was HOPING we might get some new
candidates for the Vestal Order.

Found this ad for a Pocono Mt. Resort.
If only Nero had seen this place, he wouldn't have had to build the Golden House. And he didn't even
have the Whirlpool Champagne Bath!
Anybody up for a mountain resort weekend??

The Champagne Towers by Cleopatra are
decorated in the grandeur of Roman Emperor
Caesar and his love, Egyptian Queen
Cleopatra. The royal suite is adorned largely
in Egyptian splendor, complete with imported
tile from Spain, authentic Egyptian artwork on
papyrus paper, a full-length, wall mural
featuring a desert caravan and oasis scene,
and a golden Egyptian border throughout the
suite. There are several subtle accents
reminiscent of Ancient Rome, including the
Roman columns that rise from the floor beside
the patented, seven-foot-high, Champagne

Among its many unique features, the four-level

Actually, no, it isn't.

The Temple of Vesta opened on the 7th (sometimes the 5th, depending on the calendar). The main
festivities of the Vestalia open today on the 9th, with the opening of the Penus Vestae to the matrons of
Rome, who walk barefoot through the city to ask for blessings on the households.

This is also a holiday for millers and bakers, signifying the times when the hearth was used mainly for
baking bread, and the mills and mill animals are garlanded with flowers and loaves. These animals are
usually donkeys: a link with Pales, who is represented as a donkey.

Vestalia ends on the Ides, when the sweepings of the Temple (including the ash pit that holds the ashes
of the sacred fire) are thrown down the Porta Stercoraria (a trapdoor near the temple of Saturn,
connecting to a drain to the Cloaca Maxima and to the Tiber), and the Temple is closed.

"This is the day on which thou, O Tiber, does roll to the deep along the Etrurian streams, the cleansing of
the shrine of Vesta."

Salvete, omnes.

All right, I instigated this off-topic thread, but this American beer
bashing is going a bit far. First of all, while the mass market American
beers ARE f*cking near water, there are also lesser known American labels,
too numerous to mention, that are the equal of any on the planet.

Secondly, Molson is nothing to write home about, so take off, eh!

Salvete omnes...

Many of these virus reports are hoaxes...typically they claim to
emanate from a major computer manufacturer, software publisher or
online service; warn of dire things to come if you open or otherwise
manipulate certain e-mail; and ask you to forward them to everyone you
know. The only real damage that gets done is the clogging of 'Net
bandwidth by all the circulating warnings--!

I haven't checked out ths particular report yet, but for the latest on
the current Viruses *and* the current hoaxes, go to datafellows.com (a
favorite with us tech types)...they have descriptions and
down-to-the-wire, alphabetized info on every virus even suspected of
being out there, as well as downloadable patches for many of them, a
clear explanation of why you *cannot* harm your hardware by opening an
e-mail message, and a 'rumor-mill' section for the hoaxes.

Going to the home page of whatever company supposedly authored the
warning is a good thing too; any virus that is a threat to that
particular computer, program, or service will be discussed there.

Makin' his list, checkin' it twice...

And for protection against "potential beer," a good Harp or Guinness will do.
When in doubt, upgrade to a 6 pack.

However, Harp and Guiness may be in short supply. In such trying
instances, either Shiner- or Ziegenbock is an acceptable substitute.
Samuel Adams, while good, is abit too pricey........

Speaking in general terms, an examination of the flight of birds. The sky
is divided into regions, called Templi, each of which corresponds to a god.
Certain Templi (those to the right hand of the augur) are favorable, while
other Templi (those to the left) are unfavorable, as a general rule. The
cries and flight of birds coming from these templi indicate the nature of
the omen.

This is a highly simplified version -- we're working on a handbook.

M. Gladius Saevus, Augur

Naw. The deal is that my term was officially up in April.

I was hoping we'd get one or two new candidates who were able to serve under the (admittedly strict)
provisions of the Charter (modelled as closely as we could get on Numa's). Virginity is not a requirement,
but celibacy is.

Any Vestal who's served faithfully can "re-enlist" at any time: once you're consecrated by Vesta, you're
consecrated for life. Also, only a Vestal can train an incoming one, so you have duty no matter what.

So I'm still tending the flame.

My Polish written is very rudimentary...I learned it by hearing my babca in
the kitchen growing up... it's weird if I read something in Polish I
understand it but since I didnt learn to write it I only know a few words to
typoe down...I'm trying to learn it better since I had i schooled out of me
by my mother (she's not Polish) who didnt want her kids having a Polish
accent...so we weren't allowed to speak Polish around her if Papa wasn't
home... the records are in Polish... my aunt Krysztyna translated them...
She grew up speaking and reading Polish since her parents (she's related by
marriage) came here after WWII She was born in Warszawa, if I remember
right. and it's ok that you asked, I don't mind

Salve
I didn't mean the sugesstion to be disrespectful to either Goddess... I'm
sorry if you took the phrase that way. My relationships with the deities I
serve tends to be rather relaxed. As far as the mores of Roma Mater, I will
not discuss my opinion of them at length. Having been a student of history
as an amateur (just cuz I love it) for most of my life and having a deep
love of much that was Rome, I can't help but wonder sometimes if King Numa's
decision to have the Vestals be virgins had more to do with keeping his
daughters that way and less to do with Vesta Herself. I suppose you will
find that to be disrespectful as well, but I know I am not the only one who
has mused about this idea. I would honor the notion of celibacy as a
sacrifice if I honestly felt that Vesta Herself required it. As someone who
seriously considered joining the convent when I was a teen, I have a deep
respect for those people who give that up as part of a vocation... I will
also not discuss at length the nature of my vocation with Her... I have done
so with someone of Nove Roma whose opinion I value and respect deeply... via
private email and that is the only way I will do so.
