Salve, Dexippe.

Gratias tibi ago! It was easy for me to be objective when I was so new to
Nova Roma, and for that reason, I wish I had been able to write more of the
Annal for the year MMDCCLI before I took on magisterial duties. Still, with
regard to events that occurred before and shortly after I came to Nova Roma,
I hope I'll be able to maintain the same level of objectivity... if I can
find the time to write! However, both because I have other demands on my
time now, as well as being more involved in the historical events of Nova
Roma (and thus less likely to be objective), I hope someone will come
forward to write the Annal for the current year MMDCCLII.

Vale,

I also loved to read the Annals. It's very objective, although sometimes it
really appears as a true chronicle with many personal comments from the
author (which I enjoyed very much, no matter if I personally agree or not).

According the Associated Press the House voted today to allow
the 10

Commandments to be posted in court houses and schools. It was
an

amendment to a juvenile crime bill allowing states to decide
whether or

not to allow such postings on government property. This posting is

supposed to reinstill the value of human life in children. Rep. Bob

said that if they had been posted in Columine the shoots would

Can anyone give me an idea of how long it takes to
process applications for citizenship? There is a
potential new member to the gens Cordia who states
he sent in the application "some time ago" and hasn't
heard back yet. I was just wanting to get an idea
of the turn around time for applications.

I think this is a good question. I know Don's citizenship has been

I have a question about the practical application of
the Roman tradition of the Bulla. Considering the
fact that babies like to put things in their mouths, I wonder if it would be considered safe to put a
necklace on a newborns today. Does anyone
have any thoughts on this? Additionally, what
age would you consider safe to have a child
begin wearing a necklace safely.

Thanks,
Paul

First I would dare say nobody thought much about child safety
back then. Lapis has a bulla and a fibula They are tucked away
until he is old enough to have a cape and wear the bulla. Lapis
puts everything in his mouth. Terry didn't have that problem.

Lapis is also a grabber. Hair, ears, noses, bullas, collars, fingers
......... He would have to wait a while before I could be assured he
wouldn't hang himself! Again, I didn't have that problem with Terry.
If she had had a bulla, she may even have worn it.

As for the age thing. Well, Terry won't have anything around her
neck, but some children wear necklaces at a very young age. I
suppose it depends on the child first and the parents (and their
level of acceptance and common sense) second.

My 2 cents

get -- or so I'm told <G>)

I doubt that there is one. AFter all, the idea of homosexuality as an
orientation popped into the collective unconscious sometimes in the 1800s.

Still, you could certainly coin one. Latin is infinitely flexible (much
like English) in that ability.

For a game I played online once I used Paedicator, but I think that might be
wrong in several ways, not all of them ethical. :)

As a slave society Roma Antica would have had slaves with the army. There were no slaves
IN the army. It has been debated what proportion of a Roman line of march would have been
slaves. It undoubtedly varied according to time period, and quality of the army, and the
general. Better armies have smaller proportion of non-combatants. The dudes in the gold
breastplates would have had a bunch of slaves around them.

Slave children...? As old Cicero put it, a slave is a tool. What use would child tools
have been in an army? Also, what age is the cut off for a "child"? A Roman male took on
his toga virilis around puberty, call it 13, could be earlier. To Roma Antica that is not
a child but an adult. And for a tool (slave) it wouldn't matter. What would matter is
how much work could be gotten out of the poor wretch before it was cast aside. Definitely
not a part of Roman society we want to get into.

What did they do? The child slaves would have been of little use in labor, but they would
have been so employed. The child slaves who worked "in the big house" would probably have
been "entertainers" [nudge, nudge, wink, wink]; musicians, dancers, etc. But this is only
what of City foofraws was brought into the filed. In a real fighting army it is possible
that a specialist slave might have a slave who was an apprentice. (Yes. Slaves could own
slaves.) The physicians were often slaves. I recall one famous physician in Rome who
sold himself into slavery for the purpose of learning medicine. Then he saved his money,
bought his freedom, set up business in Rome and became rich and famous. Any of the
specialties that might have been done by slaves could have had slave child apprentices.
But again, the catching point is this being With An Army. (If you haven't figured out I'm
typing this as I recall it, I'll tell you now. I am. I'm NOT inventing this, just
recalling from 40 plus years of reading.) Of course much of the Imperial ARmy service was
in fairly permanent base camps. Complete societies grew outside the walls of the castra.
...

There were also No Galley slaves. Galley slaves came about with the enlightened
Renaissance. The oarsmen in ancient times were Free men. Forget Ben Hur, as history --
it's a fun flick.

I leave off here and let Fabius have his turn. And Audens. And maybe Marius Fimbria will
want to chime in too.

Valete.

C. Aelius Ericius.
