Well, in fact I'm not sure on how to evaluate this point... You know that to
build a digest takes time... To translate it takes even more time, and
discussions have their proper temporal context. We would risk that this hard
work would become in fact useless.

I think that this is the most important: presence on the Internet. Even
today I have received an email from a person congratulating me for the
Lusitania Web site, and he may become one more citizen. The Web is an
important way for getting new people.
Of course, not everyone has Web expertise, but we have a Web team which can
help precisely on those situations, receiving the content from governors (or
other citizens) and just putting that content on the Web. I think that a
Provincia Brasilia Web page would be a very important (and promising) step.

Oh Sweetie, I can do a lot better than Daley!

But hey, France would be nice.

But alas, I'm going to Grand Rapids, MI to visit a few friends. My one
friend, Rick, has terminal cancer and things aren't looking to good so this
may be the last time I see him. I'm going to be staying with him since he
needs someone to take care of him. Friends have been taking turns keeping
him company, and getting him through the day-to-day. So I've taken on this
responsibility for the next week. So it's not all "vacation" but at least
it's out of the office and in the company of a good friend.

He's in good spirits so it won't be all sobbing and crying over his
condition. He tells me he just wants to spend a lot of time on the beach of
Lake Michigan and visiting friends, etc. But he hasn't been able to pay his
electricty or phone bill so that's why I will be out of touch for the week.
I may be able to sign onto my account from another friend's house but I don't
want to promise that.

So...with all that...Dexie will be back by July 6. So y'all better behave!

Salvete cives

The delay on the formation of the Comitia Populi, one of the main electoral
promises, has been causing instability and brought suspicion over Nova Roma
institutions. One of the main reasons for this delay has been the
disagreement on how to distribute citizens among tribes and centuries, which
is needed for the correct summoning of the Comitia according to the
Constitution. As Censor Cassius has already explained, the main disagreement
was between Tribunus Plebis Avidius Tullius Callidus and the
Censores/Senate. As a consequence of this disagreement, Tribunus Plebis
Avidius Tullius Callidus has quited both his office and citizenship, leaving
the plebeians with no Tribunus, as Avidius Tullius' coleague has disappeared
since the very beginning of his office. In order to end this instability and
provide for the correct and constitutional work of our institutions until
the next elections, I, Antonius Gryllus Graecus, Aedilis Plebis, have
accepted to occupy the office of Tribunus Plebis by senatorial appointment.
One of the proposals for the formation of tribes and centuries was from
Praetor Urbanus Sulla and myself, and we have considered it as
constitutional and simple. As the Censores agree with that proposal, there
shall be now no reason for postponing the creation of the Comitia, as I take
compromise of not to veto this proposal of formation of tribes and centuries
which is going to be implemented by the Censores.
I also state that the acceptance of this new office won't make me forget my
other duties as Aedilis Plebis and Propraetor Provinciae Lusitaniae.

I, Antonius Gryllus Graecus do hereby solemnly swear to uphold the honor of
Nova Roma, and to act always in the best interests of the people and the
Senate of Nova Roma.

As a magistrate of Nova Roma, I, Antonius Gryllus Graecus swear to do honor
to the Gods and Goddesses of Rome in my public dealings, and to pursue the
Roman Virtues in my public and private life.

I, Antonius Gryllus Graecus further swear to fulfill the obligations and
responsibilities of the office of Tribunus Plebis to the best of my
abilities.

On my honor as a Citizen of Nova Roma, and in the presence of the Gods and
Goddesses of the Roman people and by their will and favor, do I accept the
position of Tribunus Plebis and all the rights, privileges, obligations, and
responsibilities attendant thereto.

The Gods of Rome be with you.

Roma aeterna est! Ave res publica! Ave Roma!

Tribunus Plebis, Congratulations! Antonius Gryllus has been a hard working

The Senate voted to allow all magistrates holding elected positions to have

Subject: Re: Brazilian Membership
From: jmath669642reng@--------)
Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 13:01:29 -0400 (EDT)
In regards to the topic of Brazilian Membership, I have accomplished
part of my original goal already in re-starting a dialogue with members
of that group.

I would like to respond to the points of both Titus Horatius Atticus and
.Antonius Gryillus Graecus in their postings in response to the subject
topic".

I agree with your assessmens of the informed non-english speaker in NR.
It is further logical to accept your evaluation that the several
Brazilian Members are knowledgeable in English (to differeing degrees)
and are available on net with at least on operating knowledge of the
Internet workings.

Using these above as givens I agree that the primary problem is the
interest in what is being transmitted over the list. This is why a few
of the Nova Romans have been providing information messages on their
interests. However more could be done.

I am not sure that a full blown digest is necessary, but rather a series
of topics / ideas of particular interest to Brazilians, who are not
involved with the chit-chat emanating from the U.S. We could start with
the presently established areas of interest within Nova Roma or with
ideas for how to effectively bring forward propositions to the Senate.
There is the possibility of establishing a Brazilian Onelist that would
chit-chat about things in the Southern American Continent, which could
be brought onto the NR List by the List Modrator.

I strongly agree that for the foreseeable future that presence on the
Internet is the most important aspect of a continuing dialogue with NR
members around the world. Another idea which may have merit is to
convert the NR Web Page to Portuguese for the benefit of those who speak
that language.

The Provincia in Brazil is really in place, but at the present time does
not have a Praetor appointed. A request to the Consuls for
consideration as the Praetor to the Province of Brazilia would be a
start. However, any registered NR Citizen of any province has the right
and ability to make internal arrangements for mutually agreeable facets
of NR, List of topics about which to talk and / or research,
establishing, institutions relationships and bridges. I cannot imagine
how I could be of assistance to you in these efforts, but I am willig
to do what I can, because of my admiration for your countries from my
father's, my wife's and last my own views of your language common
countries (Brazil, Portugal, Azores and Madeira).

May I suggest the following, as a set of first activities, that each
member of the Brazilian NR Province send a message (short or long) to
both yourself and to me letting us know how they would like to establish
the above and what their ideas are about participating on the NR net.

I have been promised shortly, by the Honorable Censor Cassius that he
will be able to provide E-Mail information to the Praetors of any
province who asks, so that information should be forthcoming in a short
time (hopefully). It is within the Provincial Praetor's authority to
make appointments of Legates to over see the areas or regions of the
province that roughly follow state boundaries.

So, being in agreement with both you and Propraetor Graecus I thik that
our first efforts should concerntrate on bringing the NR members in
Brazil back on line so that we may get some feed-back in regards to
their needs, desires and ideas

Note to Antonius Gryllus Graecus:

My Most Sincere Congratulations are forwarded to you on your recent
appointment to the ffice of Tribune of the People. Your hard work for
Nova Roma in the past, and your obvious interest in the promotion of a
strong Nova Roma o the future certainly fits you for the task ahead. I
look forward to working closely withyou.

Marcus Audens

Note to other overseas provinces:

My purpose in selecting the Brazilians in writing my introductory letter
of encouragement was primarily based on getting to know them better and
because I know that they have a great potential for strength in NR.
However, I think that the items discussed between myself A. Gaecus, and
T. Atticus could aply to any Provice within or without the boundaies of
the U.S. I would welcome such an outpouring from any one of our
provinces who are feeling a bit left out because of different cultural,
regional or nationalistic needs.

Marcus Audens

Note to all Praetors, Pro-Praetors, Consuls and Proconsuls of Provinces:

I invite your comments and ideas on this post in regards to your ideas
for helping to implement the internal provisional strucure of Brazilia

Marcus Audens

Note to all NR members in the province of Brazilia:

I am greatly interested in your ideas, thoughts, needs, and desires in
relation to the topic of this posting. I ask you most kindly to please
contact me and I further ask most respectfully that you not take refuge
in not being fluent in English before responding. I am told that all of
you have at least two languages, while I have but one, and I do not do
well in that one (<Grin>)

My interpretation of the announcement was that appointed magistrates don't
get any seat at all, in the back or otherwise. And the elected magistrates
admitted under this ruling cannot vote.

But hey, it's a vast improvement, isn't it? It means that the bulk of the
magistrates will know what is going on in the Senate, and can work in a more
concerted fashion actually to move us somewhere. And, not the smallest
consideration, our government will now be much more like Cassical Rome's, I
think.

I'm grateful for this development.

That was *completely* unnecessary, Gangale...and if the Senate had had
its collective head screwed on straight, your dead-horse 'scandal'
would not have happened in the first place. The indignity of an
elected Magistrate of Nova Roma having to take such measures in order
to obtain the information that should have been his by right of his
office...and the repeated and merciless public baiting that Magistrate
has been subjected to ever since; these were and are Wrong Things that
are now, hopefully, being corrected.

I wish to hear no more such 'barbs' hurled in that particular
direction.

Let us now pause to consider the Roman virtues of Gravitas and

Please be patient... it can get a lot worse than this!

Meanwhile, welcome to Nova Roma. Don't eat the figs.

Salve, Lucia Maria.

I cordially invite your attention to <a href="http://www.senseofhumor.org" target="_top" >http://www.senseofhumor.org</a>. They may
be able to help you. Then you can joke about this as Sulla and I have on

Salve, Erici.

The Senatus Consulta does not apply to provincial governors. It applies to
"all magistrates holding elected positions". Provincial governorships are
appointed positions.

Maybe next time....

Yeah, when I heard that the U.S. Senate had been hacked, I thought, "Huh! They ain't so hot -- WE got
hacked first!!"

Good thing that our Praetor Urbanis has a sense of humor.

Go to the Web Page, and select your Roman Name. Once that is done, fill
out the application that you find there and send it to one of the
Censores. You should also message the Consul (Cinncinnatus) just so he
knows what is going on. It will take a while to register you and place
you in a Gens or place your gens on the list, which ever way you wish.
Once you are registered then you are an active member. There are no
dues or taxes, but the is a subscription to a very nice newsletter
called the Eagle that you may wish o consider. If you need further
information or help, you may call upon me, or anyone else on the list to
assist you. We hope you will join us!!!

Quaestor
