Unfortunately I agree with Pythia. I live in a democratic macronation and I
have no intention of obeying a dictatorial micronation. This nation has been
subverted from what I have read on this list by several people who don't
even believe in the Religio. It's Constantine all over again. Please accept
this as a renouncing of my citizenship.

Look upon the rolls of your nation's founders. My name is there, a noble
gens. I eagerly watched Nova Roma grow, and found joy in it.
But now I feel no more joy in being a Nova Roman. It is my duty to ask the
gods' blessings on Nova Roma: how can I, when I am no longer sure that Nova
Roma deserves those blessings? The words "nationi novae romae universae"
stick in my throat.
I renounce my citizenship to Nova Roma, effective at noon today Chicago
time. I have set my house in order, and the gens Gladia still endures.
I intended a long letter, but can think of little more to say. I no longer
feel joy in being a citizen of Nova Roma, and withdraw to pursue other
goals.

Since there were so many cives located in Pennsylvania, it wouldn't have
been fair to lump them all together in a single tribe (remember, more people
per tribe = less influence per vote). Cives in Pennsylvania will be divided
between the two. (I'm sorry that I don't know which tribe you will
specifically be in, as I'm at work and don't have access to all my files at
the moment.)

I add my voice to that of the honorable Gryllus. This is not the time to be
abandoning the Republic. If you do not choose to continue in a magistracy,
fine and well, but to disavow one's citizenship - espeically at a time like
this? I don't have words to describe how these actions strike me. I will
remain part of the Republic and be here as support while this trying time is
worked through and with the Blessings of Vesta brought to a harmonious

Salvete, omnes!
I thought everyone would want to see the speech I gave at the introduction
of today's Ludi Romani, held today under the auspices of Antonius Gryllus
Graecus, in honor of Apollo and Concordia:
"As we honor the Goddess Concordia this day, I cannot help but be swept up
in the radiance of Her presence. Her spirit must truly move among us, among
all the Citizens of Nova Roma, if we are to overcome those troubles which
have recently befallen our fair Republic. And it is in the spirit of
Concordia that I wish to speak on the subject of the former Consul,
Cincinnatus.
"While I stand by my opinion of Cincinnatus as a politician, I am not deaf
to the cries of his supporters and friends, many of whom have contacted me
on his behalf. In the spirit of compromise and cooperation embodied by the
great Goddess Concordia, I hereby decree that Cincinnatus may indeed once
again be enlisted as a Citizen of our fair Republic, and I shall personally
reinstall him in his sacred office of Flamen Martiales, on the sole proviso
that he neither seek nor serve in political office, including the Senate,
until 2,754 AUC (March of 2001), roughly a year and a half from now.
"It is my sincere hope that he shall accept my offer in the spirit of
concord and compromise in which it is made, and offer him my word that no
ill-will shall be shown by myself to him; let there be a clean slate between
us."

I agree. But there are some things that are FINALLY being done,
thanks to Germanicus (did *I* say that <G>). My Sodalis found it's
way out of the red tape, I finally got my Priesthood (I wasn't really
even prepared, as I fully expected to be blown off at least a month,
but I managed to get most of it together --- I'll email when I have a
clue what's going on). The Senate has a larger body, and it has
some variety to it for a change!
GODS!! Who'd a thunk I'D be doin all THIS?? <G>
Maybe if folks would sit on their hands a couple of weeks and then
decided whether or not they want out ....... I was thinking of
resigning my citizenship too, ESPECIALLY when I found out about
the dictator thing. But I held myself in check and calmed down.
So far so good ... HECK I've already mentioned that Germanicus
has done more in the last couple of days than the old Senate
managed to do in the last 6 months or better!!!!!!!

I've queried them about this and that, and they sound okay. They are willing to make

Roman Army Sandals;
The best source of information would hopefully be IXth Legio Hispana or
the XXth Legio. The XXIVth Legio may also have a handle on that
information. If you wish I will contact Matthew Amt (XXth Legio) and

am I sure why this one looked good to me in the first place. One thing is that the
website gave me more to go on than the caligae makers that I have seen mentioned on list

Salvete omnes!
I got my caligae from Uilliam an Tarbh, mka Bill Stephenson, of
Riverside, Calif. They were the first pair he'd ever made, from a
pattern I found in one of the Osprey Men-at-Arms series (I'm pretty
sure it was 'The Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan'...[checks]...yup,
page 13). They looked so impressive that, before he'd finished mine,
he'd garnered orders for six more pairs...and now there is a photo of
*MY* Caligae in his 'catalogue' (more of a photo album-cum-portfolio
that he takes with him to shows and events).
The boots have held up extremely well. I have been running around in
them for six years, on terrain ranging from stony desert to Texas
autumn mud-bog, and it was only after five that I began to seriously
think about having them re-soled. Bill has since retired his day job
to become a full-time leatherworker, and the caligae are among his most
popular products. He can make them with either the traditional leather
soles and hobnails, or (if your gal just wants a pair to wear around
the office) with a more modern--and comfortable!--rubber sole.

<a href="http://www.legionXXIV.org" target="_top" >http://www.legionXXIV.org</a>
I make my own caligae. They are not difficult to make,
but can be tedious.
Here is the data from my webpage, based on Legio XX's
data by Matthew Amt.
CALIGAE These heavy sandals are the classic Roman army boot. Numerous
examples have been found at first-century sites. Patterns and materials
are available, and construction is fairly simple. The upper is cut from a
single piece of 4 to 6-ounce leather, well-oiled or waxed to prevent decay.
Paste a copy of your patterns to the backside of the leather for the uppers
and then cut out the pattern with a sharp knife, razor blade and/or
scissors. The glued paper pattern can be later soaked off in warm water.
The sole is 1/2" to 3/4" thick and is made of several thick layers, with the
upper sandwiched between the top two. The layers are held together with
hobnails: lay them on an anvil or flat piece of steel, and drive the nails
into the sole so that the points go through the innermost layer and bend
over as they hit the steel. Cover the clenched points with an insole of
thin leather, securing it in place with a few stitches. Complete the shoe by
sewing up the heel seam with a butted or overlapped seam. The domed iron
hobnails should be about 1/4" to 1/2" in diameter. The heads need not be
perfect hemispheres --irregular, flatter, or more conical shapes are
acceptable. World War I or II-style hobnails will work, or "Antique Nails"
from some hardware stores. Upholstery tacks are not durable enough.
Proper hobnails are available from the Commander. Before cutting good
leather, make a working mock-up out of heavy cloth. DO NOT MAKE THE SOLES
TOO WIDE - trace your foot and cut the soles narrower by 1/4" on each side.
Make the tabs extra long and the slits shorter than necessary, and adjust
them later.
LEGION XXIV HAS HOBNAILS !
As a result of successful campaigns and victories over the enemies of Rome;
the Legion XXIV Quartermaster has secured a supply of Hobnails aka Moore
#196 Decorative Nails. These durable nails (not furniture tacks) are
dispensed in boxes of 144, enough to outfit one pair of caligae; for
$9.00 per box, postpaid. Send payment to George Metz - 13 Post
un - Newtown Squa--------PA - 19073-3014. <a h--------"/post/nova--------?p--------ctID=034056178009193116062046186246114012071048139" >legionxxiv@--------</a>

Hope this helps. I have no experience or knowledge of the caligae
made by others, except by Matt Amt. Matt or myself can supply
you with patterns, if you wish.
As always I remain;
Tuus in Sodalicio Romanae Rei Pubicae
Yours in the Comradeship of the Roman Republic
Gallio / George

Provinciae in Europa |
From: |

Salvete Romani,
I would like to reply to the new map of european provinces on the NR web
site.
1. I can not see there some important ancient Roman provinces which
more or less exactely have their modern equvalents. I mean NORICUM,
RAETIA, both MOESIAE, MACEDONIA and ILLYRICUM. Probably far away from
Europe it seems to be the same, but I think we may respect the real
historical bourders of the provinces. Simply, because Swiss is not
Pannonia, perdominant part of Austria is not Pannonia too, FYRM is not
Thrace, Albanians would always prefer to be called Illyrians than
Dalmatians (modern meaning so close to Croatians), Slovenians are not
Italians, Russians are not asians, Czech lands were never in Panonias
too, but they have the nice ancient name of Boiohaeum (Bohemia), etc
etc.
2. I think it is not correct to establish provinces Transgermania and
Transdacia as Polish, Whiterussians and balthic people (Lithuania,
Latvia and Estonia) are not German (is it one more new attept to
germanize them - the last one was 55 years ago?) and even in the ancient
times these lands were not inhabited by Germans. They have their own
ancient names, so why not to use them?
The same is valid with the Ukrainians in "Transdacia". So, Transdacia
could be modern Moldova, but Ukraine??? I wonder if potencial ukrainians
would agree to be part of Dacian (Roumanian) province.
3. If Russia will be Asia Centralis, what a name will be suitable for
real Central Asian republics as (from Kazachstan, Uzbekistane,
Kirgizstan etc.). I am sure that Sarmatia was more suitable name for
Russia and Scythia for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, I wonder if someone have consulted with NR citizens from
these lands about the name of the provinces.
Valete
Alex. Iul.Caes.Probus Macedonicus
P.S. I would like to announce that I have established a list for east
european NR citizens (and not only) and wellcome everyone who is
interested to join in.The list is named VizantiaNR and is possibly to
find it through onelist-search. Communicating language is free, so you
can write in whatever language you want (it is another question if
somebody would be able to reply, of course) and east-european languages
are especially encouraged.
And one more kindly request: as personal offensives became a common
practise on NR list I would be very thankful for replies with such a
content to be -------- me per--------lly on <a href="/po--------ovaroma?protectID=180166080058082135090082190036" >hadji@--------</a>.
Thank you, my dear and polite NRs!
