The differance here is that this could have brought great dishonor to Nova Roma,
as the woman in question was only seventeen, and Sulla has a pornograghy
business. Some of us, especially those familiar with the British, worried about
the possibility of headlines like "Pagan U.S. cult lures young girl into
porno...." etc.etc.
As it turns out, young Sulla had more to worry about than we had anticipated.

Salvete! This is a reminder to all mater/paterfamiliae who may be
considering having new people join their gentes. Please review the names
with your prospective gentilis to ensure that they are at *least* of the
correct gender and properly Latinized (if they insist on not using a
traditional praenomen). Also, please inform the censors, if possible in
advance, that new people are joining your gens and that they have your
permission. This will speed the process greatly.
At the moment, the web application form on the Nova Roma site is not
working. However, the text form is still available on the same page and

Salvete,
I was wondering if anyone had any coming of age rituals for either
males or females? I know there was one for males, but I don't
know what it consisted of. If there is one for females, I have no
idea what it was nor where I might find information on it.

ALL About Your Priestess |
From: |
"Don and Crys Meaker" mater@-------- |
Date: |
Sun, 11 Jul 1999 10:09:16 -0500 |
|
Salvete,
I am still trying to figure out what, if any duties the Priestess of
Iuno had. I have been meditating, but did not want to use the
information I have gotten along with some common sense to form
this particular Priesthood to conform even a little bit with modern
day thinkings (and all that jazz) without consulting the other
Priests as well as the people of Nova Roma.
I also wanted to sort of reintroduce myself to the people.
WARNING: This is all about me. It will be considered by some to
be revealing too much about myself, but as you are my new family
and as I am in a Priesthood, I feel I need to let you know everything
there is to know about me. I am pathetically honest, or try to be.
Many say I go to far in it. Everybody is entitled to their opinion.
YOUR BIG CHANCE TO DELETE THIS POST AND MOVE ON:
One thing is that although Iuno was a god for women, I would
somehow like to incorporate men into it somehow (don't know
exactly how yet). I am relatively old fashioned (Don calls me
refreshingly reactionary <G>) in I rarely wear pants outside the
home, I wear a veil in public, and I do very few things without
consulting my husband. I consider this simple respect and not
bowing before a male. I also have the un-90's belief that men and
women are NOT equal. Women are not as strong as men (and
oughtn't try to be) and men cannot have babies (nor should they
want to try). Intelligence? Men and women can be just as
intelligent as the other, but women and men think differently.
Example: You ought to see my beloved husband try multi-tasking
<G>. Of course there are exceptions, DUH, everybody their own
person. I believe strongly in gender roles. Probably stems from
the old fashioned women who raised me (my mother is in her early
70's).
Those of you who have known me the longest know I have had my
share of being father to my children. The knowledge that, should I
find myself in the duel role of mother and father again, I can do it. I
am a tough cookie <G>. In that way I am decidedly un-Roman.
You guys know what happens when I open my big, fat, keyboard!!
<G> I'd have been on someone's rostra back in the day!! <G>
Anyway, I was born in Chicago in 1968 (Oct 13th) and raised by
my maternal aunt when it became obvious to my biological mother
that she was incapable of taking care of me due to her alcoholism
and immaturity even at the age of 37 (her age at my birth). My
father was married at the time of my birth and is not listed on my
birth certificate (he did not know I was alive until I was 9 months old
and in the hospital with pneumonia). I have a mental block on all
the years up until I was 11. The memories I have before then are
allegedly false. This apparently stems from emotional abuse from
my family (physical abuse is not their thing). One thing my mother
(maternal aunt) told me was "We didn't want Caroline (my bio
mother) to have you, but now that you're here we love you anyway".
Things like that contributed to my amnesia.
I am a alcoholic and a drug addict, sober since 6 April, 1990. In
AA I was taught what is basically my motto. This is me. If you
don't like me, that is not my problem. I am not here to impress
you. I do not have time to make up lies to tell you. There is only
one major Secret or Lie in my life now and it is not one that would
hurt anyone but myself. No, I'm not confessing anything to
anyone, so NAH!
The ones who have known me longest know the truth surrounding
Lapis and his bio and Terry and hers. My children are my gift from
the gods as well as is my husband. I cherish them above all else
in this world.
Ummmm, I think I have covered just about everything. I thank you
for bearing with me as I spill my guts all over the hems of your
togas <G>.
Thanks again and Vale,

Bravo m'dear! :)
I'm relatively new, but I love you all already.
I have nothing to shout, except that I'm finally all settled into my new
apartment and am starting my job--no, *career*--tomorrow. That makes me a
happy Kyrinia. It means that I get to afford naughty purchases at the local
Pagan candy shops.

Apollo - Luciferus
by: Daminaus Lucianus Dexippus
Hail to the Lord of the Blazing Sun
Riding the Heavens with each new day begun
Banishing the darkness of the cold, dreary night
Warming the Earth by His solar flight
The Goddess of Dawn, Aurora, heralds His call
Drawing back the drape for one and for all
Cheered on by the voices of the four earthly Seasons
Accompanied by the Muses and other heavenly legions
Steering the chariot through its heavenly courses
Sometimes drawn by swans and sometimes by horses
Dare we not look at this radiant site
'Lest our eyes be burned by His all powerful light
Stroking the chords of His crafted golden lyre
So gentle a God who commands the Great Ball of Fire
Careful He is to keep the Earth from a scorch
Reminded of Phaeton and the Earth lit a torch
Assailing the sky from the East to the West
A symbol of strength, His Holy One's crest
Outshining all of a neighboring star
Always so near, yet ever so far
Harken we now the God of the Sun
Sing praise unto praise of the true Golden One
Forever the champion of day over night
Hail to the Sun God and His eternal might

Um... god or goddess of purification.
Apollo.
Yes, Apollo can have my dirty laundry.

Hi. I am Rusticus, and I am an alcoholic. **cries of support**
Actually, I'm not; I've never been drunk yet. This sad fact is
really the great shame that I would like to confess. Any NR
citizen (except for Dexippus) that would like to undertake
the solemn duty of getting me piss-drunk, please speak up.
After the past few days, I suddenly have a need to wake up
in my own vomit, with a new tattoo, and clad only in some
dimly-remembered stripper's panties.
Thank you,
Rusticus

Salve,
I get tipsy on not a full glass, but *half* a glass of wine. And I have
witnesses.
The most tipsy I've gotten was on a wine trailing around the Finger Lakes
area... After the second winery, I had difficulty walking.

Sarcasm is the result of a weak mind. Maybe we need another forum for
personal matters and let this area be reserved for the res publica. Does
anyone know how I would petition the Senate or the Dictator on this
suggestion?

Like the Romans *never * talked about family matters? Have you noticed all the gossip in
the primary sources? Herkle! Some of them are no more than gossip sewn together with
chronological events. Of course much of history Is palace gossip. "Did you hear what
Tiberius did? The old Goat!" And did you know why Cicero's friend Atticus is supposed to
have That cognomen? (It ain't because of the Greek statues he collects.) And what about
the King of Bithynia? Eh??? And how long would Cicero's diatribes against Catilina be if
he left out all the moralizing comments? Of course with Cicero making those accusations
one can not say that it is hypocritical, right! We know about Cicero. No one at all
would call Him loose. Eh? That reminds me of a joke.... But I guess Romans never told
jokes.
[Did you hear the one about the Gaul, the Greek and the Egyptian?]
Bene valete.

Salve Gaius Severus Marius,
I think that it is a wonderful thing that so many members of NR have
grown close enough to share so much of their lives with others. But you are
right in that these intensely personal matters do seem to belong on another
forum. I think your idea for a separate forum to be created is a wonderful
one which would very easily resolve the matter at hand (and please everyone
involved). It is a wonderful thing for Nova Roma to have grown large enough
where two forums are needed! Gods be praised!

Ludi Apollinaris - Poetry |
From: |
SDmtwi@-------- |

Salvete,
Here is my submission for the Ludi Apollinaris. Neither the English
nor the Latin versions are my own work. Therefore, I hope that at best I
would receive an honorable mention, and that the palm of victory would be
reserved for someone who entered an original work.
This is one of my favorite pieces, taken from the _Satyricon_ of
Petronius. Unfortunately, due to its content, _Satyricon_ garners much less
attention than it ought to receive. As you can see from the selection below,
the Muses were kind to Petronius. I have never believed that his work should
be resigned to the category of low comedy, nor that its biggest contribution
to Latin literature is its depiction of colloquial Latin. It is the first
example of a picaresque novel in Western literature, and I have long regarded
it as the Roman _Huckleberry_Finn_.
For those who are interested in reading it in its entirety (what
little has survived the centuries, at least), an English copy resides at
www.gis.net/~kcollins/petron/satyr/satyr.html and a Latin version is at
www.gmu.edu/departments/fld/CLASSICS/petronius.html
Valete,
T Labienus Fortunatus
Orbem iam totum victor Romanus habebat,
qua mare, qua terrae, qua sidus currit utrumque;
nec satiatus erat. Gravidis freta pulsa carinis
iam peragebantur; si quis sinus abditus ultra,
si qua foret tellus, quae fuluum mitteret aurum,
hostis erat, fatisque in tristia bella paratis
quaerebantur opes. Non vulgo nota placebant
gaudia, non usu plebeio trita voluptas.
Aes Ephyreiacum laudabat miles in unda;
quaesitus tellure nitor certaverat ostro;
Hinc Numidae accusant, illinc nova vellera Seres
atque Arabum populus sua despoliaverat arva.
Ecce aliae clades et laesae vulnera pacis.
Quaeritur in silvis auro fera, et ultimus Hammon
Afrorum excutitur, ne desit belua dente
ad mortes pretiosa; fame premit advena classes,
tigris et aurata gradiens vectatur in aula,
ut bibat humanum populo plaudente cruorem.
Heu, pudet effari perituraque prodere fata,
Persarum ritu male pubescentibus annis
surripuere viros, exsectaque viscera ferro
in venerem fregere, atque ut fuga mobilis aevi
circumscripta mora properantes differat annos,
quaerit se natura nec invenit. Omnibus ergo
scorta placent fractique enerui corpore gressus
et laxi crines et tot nova nomina vestis,
quaeque virum quaerunt. Ecce Afris eruta terris
citrea mensa greges servorum ostrumque renidens,
ponitur ac maculis imitatur vilius aurum
quae sensum trahat. Hoc sterile ac male nobile lignum
turba sepulta mero circum venit, omniaque orbis
praemia correptis miles vagus esurit armis.
Ingeniosa gula est. Siculo scarus aequore mersus
ad mensam vivus perducitur, atque Lucrinis
eruta litoribus vendunt conchylia cenas,
ut renovent per damna famem. Iam Phasidos unda
orbata est avibus, mutoque in litore tantum
solae desertis adspirant frondibus aurae.
Nec minor in Campo furor est, emptique Quirites
ad praedam strepitumque lucri suffragia vertunt.
Venalis populus, venalis curia patrum:
est favor in pretio. Senibus quoque libera virtus
exciderat, sparsisque opibus conversa potestas
ipsaque maiestas auro corrupta iacebat.
Pellitur a populo victus Cato; tristior ille est,
qui vicit, fascesque pudet rapuisse Catoni.
Namque -- hoc dedecoris populo morumque ruina --
non homo pulsus erat, sed in uno victa potestas
Romanumque decus. Quare tam perdita Roma
ipsa sui merces erat et sine vindice praeda.
Praeterea gemino deprensam gurgite plebem
faenoris inluvies ususque exederat aeris.
Nulla est certa domus, nullum sine pignore corpus,
sed veluti tabes tacitis concepta medullis
intra membra furens curis latrantibus errat.
Arma placent miseris, detritaque commoda luxu
vulneribus reparantur. Inops audacia tuta est.
Hoc mersam caeno Romam somnoque iacentem
quae poterant artes sana ratione movere,
ni furor et bellum ferroque excita libido?
Tres tulerat Fortuna duces, quos obruit omnes
armorum strue diversa feralis Enyo.
Crassum Parthus habet, Libyco iacet aequore Magnus,
Iulius ingratam perfudit sanguine Romam,
et quasi non posset tot tellus ferre sepulcra,
divisit cineres. Hos gloria reddit honores.
Est locus exciso penitus demersus hiatu
Parthenopen inter magnaeque Dicarchidos arva,
Cocyti perfusus aqua; nam spiritus, extra
qui furit effusus, funesto spargitur aestu.
Non haec autumno tellus viret aut alit herbas
caespite laetus ager, non verno persona cantu
mollia discordi strepitu virgulta locuntur,
sed chaos et nigro squalentia pumice saxa
gaudent ferali circum tumulata cupressu.
Has inter sedes Ditis pater extulit ora
bustorum flammis et cana sparsa favilla,
ac tali volucrem Fortunam voce lacessit:
'Rerum humanarum divinarumque potestas,
Aspice late
luxuriam spoliorum et censum in damna furentem.
Aedificant auro sedesque ad sidera mittunt,
expelluntur aquae saxis, mare nascitur arvis,
et permutata rerum statione rebellant.
En etiam mea regna petunt. Perfossa dehiscit
molibus insanis tellus, iam montibus haustis
antra gemunt, et dum vanos lapis invenit usus,
inferni manes caelum sperare fatentur.
Quare age, Fors, muta pacatum in proelia vultum,
Romanosque cie, ac nostris da funera regnis.
Iam pridem nullo perfundimus ora cruore,
nec mea Tisiphone sitientis perluit artus,
ex quo Sullanus bibit ensis et horrida tellus
extulit in lucem nutritas sanguine fruges.'
Haec ubi dicta dedit, dextrae coniungere dextram
conatus, rupto tellurem soluit hiatu.
Tunc Fortuna levi defudit pectore voces:
'O genitor, cui Cocyti penetralia parent,
si modo vera mihi fas est impune profari,
vota tibi cedent; nec enim minor ira rebellat
pectore in hoc leviorque exurit flamma medullas.
Omnia, quae tribui Romanis arcibus, odi
muneribusque meis irascor. Destruet istas
idem, qui posuit, moles deus. Et mihi cordi
quippe cremare viros et sanguine pascere luxum.
Cerno equidem gemina iam stratos morte Philippos
Thessaliaeque rogos et funera gentis Hiberae.
Iam fragor armorum trepidantes personat aures,
Et Libyae cerno tua, Nile, gementia claustra,
Actiacosque sinus et Apollinis arma timentes.
Pande, age, terrarum sitientia regna tuarum
atque animas accerse novas. Vix navita Porthmeus
sufficiet simulacra virum traducere cumba;
classe opus est. Tuque ingenti satiare ruina,
pallida Tisiphone, concisaque vulnera mande:
ad Stygios manes laceratus ducitur orbis.'
Vixdum finierat, cum fulgure rupta corusco
intremuit nubes elisosque abscidit ignes.
Subsedit pater umbrarum, gremioque reducto,
telluris pavitans fraternos palluit ictus.
Continuo clades hominum venturaque damna
auspiciis patuere deum. Namque ore cruento
deformis Titan vultum caligine texit:
civiles acies iam tum spirare putares.
Parte alia plenos extinxit Cynthia vultus
et lucem sceleri subduxit. Rupta tonabant
verticibus lapsis montis iuga, nec vaga passim
flumina per notas ibant morientia ripas.
Armorum strepitu caelum furit et tuba Martem
sideribus tremefacta ciet, iamque Aetna voratur
ignibus insolitis, et in aethera fulmina mittit.
Ecce inter tumulos atque ossa carentia bustis
umbrarum facies diro stridore minantur.
Fax stellis comitata novis incendia ducit,
sanguineoque recens descendit Iuppiter imbre.
Haec ostenta brevi soluit deus. Exuit omnes
quippe moras Caesar, vindictaeque actus amore
Gallica proiecit, civilia sustulit arma.
Alpibus aeriis, ubi Graio numine pulsae
descendunt rupes et se patiuntur adiri,
est locus Herculeis aris sacer: hunc nive dura
claudit hiemps canoque ad sidera vertice tollit.
Caelum illinc cecidisse putes: non solis adulti
mansuescit radiis, non verni temporis aura,
sed glacie concreta rigent hiemisque pruinis:
totum ferre potest umeris minitantibus orbem.
Haec ubi calcavit Caesar iuga milite laeto
optavitque locum, summo de vertice montis
Hesperiae campos late prospexit, et ambas
intentans cum voce manus ad sidera dixit:
'Iuppiter omnipotens, et tu, Saturnia tellus,
armis laeta meis olimque onerata triumphis,
testor ad has acies invitum arcessere Martem,
invitas me ferre manus. Sed vulnere cogor,
pulsus ab urbe mea, dum Rhenum sanguine tingo,
dnm Gallos iterum Capitolia nostra petentes
Alpibus excludo, vincendo certior exul.
Sanguine Germano sexagintaque triumphis
esse nocens coepi. Quamquam quos gloria terret,
aut qui sunt qui bella vident? Mercedibus emptae
ac viles operae, quorum est mea Roma noverca.
At reor, haud impune, nec hanc sine vindice dextram
vinciet ignavus. Victores ite furentes,
ite mei comites, et causam dicite ferro.
Iamque omnes unum crimen vocat, omnibus una
impendet clades. Reddenda est gratia vobis,
non solus vici. Quare, quia poena tropaeis
imminet, et sordes meruit victoria nostra,
iudice Fortuna cadat alea. Sumite bellum
et temptate manus. Certe mea causa peracta est:
inter tot fortes armatus nescio vinci.'
Haec ubi personuit, de caelo Delphicus ales
omina laeta dedit pepulitque meatibus auras.
Nec non horrendi nemoris de parte sinistra
insolitae voces flamma sonuere sequenti.
Ipse nitor Phoebi vulgato laetior orbe
crevit, et aurato praecinxit fulgure vultus.
Fortior ominibus movit Mavortia signa
Caesar, et insolitos gressu prior occupat ausus.
Prima quidem glacies et cana vincta pruina
non pugnavit humus mitique horrore quievit.
Sed postquam turmae nimbos fregere ligatos
et pavidus quadrupes undarum vincula rupit,
incalvere nives. Mox flumina montibus altis
undabant modo nata, sed haec quoque -- iussa putares --
stabant, et vincta fluctus stupuere ruina,
et paulo ante lues iam concidenda iacebat.
Tum vero male fida prius vestigia lusit
decepitque pedes; pariter turmaeque virique
armaque congesta strue deplorata iacebant.
Ecce etiam rigido concussae flamine nubes
exonerabantur, nec rupti turbine venti
derant, aut tumida confractum grandine caelum.
Ipsae iam nubes ruptae super arma cadebant,
et concreta gelu ponti velut unda ruebat.
Victa erat ingenti tellus nive victaque caeli
sidera, victa suis haerentia flumina ripis:
nondum Caesar erat; sed magnam nixus in hastam
horrida securis frangebat gressibus arva,
qualis Caucasea decurrens arduus arce
Amphitryoniades, aut torvo Iuppiter ore,
cum se verticibus magni demisit Olympi
et periturorum deiecit tela Gigantum.
Dum Caesar tumidas iratus deprimit arces,
interea volucer molis conterrita pinnis
Fama volat summique petit iuga celsa Palati,
atque hoc Romano tonitru ferit omnia signa:
iam classes fluitare mari totasque per Alpes
fervere Germano perfusas sanguine turmas.
Arma, cruor, caedes, incendia totaque bella
ante oculos volitant. Ergo pulsata tumultu
pectora perque duas scinduntur territa causas.
Huic fuga per terras, illi magis unda probatur,
et patria pontus iam tutior. Est magis arma
qui temptare velit fatisque iubentibus uti.
Quantum quisque timet, tantum fugit. Ocior ipse
hos inter motus populus, miserable visu,
quo mens icta iubet, deserta ducitur urbe.
Gaudet Roma fuga, debellatique Quirites
rumoris sonitu maerentia tecta relinquunt.
Ille manu pavida natos tenet, ille penates
occultat gremio deploratumque relinquit
limen, et absentem votis interficit hostem.
Sunt qui coniugibus maerentia pectora iungant,
grandaevosque patres onerisque ignara iuventus.
Id pro quo metuit, tantum trahit. Omnia secum
hic vehit imprudens praedamque in proelia ducit:
ac velut ex alto cum magnus inhorruit auster
et pulsas evertit aquas, non arma ministris,
non regumen prodest, ligat alter pondera pinus,
alter tuta sinus tranquillaque litora quaerit:
hic dat vela fugae Fortunaeque omnia credit.
Quid tam parva queror? Gemino cum consule Magnus
ille tremor Ponti saevique repertor Hydaspis
et piratarum scopulus, modo quem ter ovantem
Iuppiter horruerat, quem tracto gurgite Pontus
et veneratus erat submissa Bosporos unda,
pro pudor! imperii deserto nomine fugit,
ut Fortuna levis Magni quoque terga videret.
Ergo tanta lues divum quoque numina vidit
consensitque fugae caeli timor. Ecce per orbem
mitis turba deum terras exosa furentes
deserit, atque hominum damnatum avertitur agmen.
Pax prima ante alias niveos pulsata lacertos
abscondit galea victum caput, atque relicto
orbe fugax Ditis petit implacabile regnum.
Huic comes it submissa Fides, et crine soluto
Iustitia, ac maerens lacera Concordia palla.
At contra, sedes Erebi qua rupta dehiscit,
emergit late Ditis chorus, horrida Erinys,
et Bellona minax, facibusque armata Megaera,
Letumque, Insidiaeque, et lurida Mortis imago.
Quas inter Furor, abruptis ceu liber habenis,
sanguineum late tollit caput, oraque mille
vulneribus confossa cruenta casside velat;
haeret detritus laevae Mavortius umbo
innumerabilibus telis gravis, atque flagranti
stipite dextra minax terris incendia portat.
Sentit terra deos, mutataque sidera pondus
quaesivere suum; namque omnis regia caeli
in partes diducta ruit. Primumque Dione

Now haughty Rome reigned mistress of the Globe,
Where'er the Ether shines with heavenly fires,
Or Earth extends, or circling Ocean rolls.
Yet still insatiate, her winged navies plowed
The burdened main, to each unplundered shore;
For to the rich she bore immortal hate,
And her own avarice still prepared her Fall.
E'en former pleasures were beheld with scorn,
As joys grown threadbare by too vulgar use.
The soldier now admired th' Assyrian dye,
And now th' Hesperian charmed his fickle pride.
Numidia here the lofty roof sustained;
There shone the honors of Serean looms;
Arabia of her balmy sweets was spoiled;
Yet still unquenched, the lust of ravage burned.
In Maurian wilds, and Ammon's distant reign,
Monsters were captived for our cruel sports.
The stranger tiger in his golden cage
Now crossed the main to press our friendly shore;
Whilst joyful Rome her monster entertained
With purple streams of her own kindred blood.
I blush to speak, I tremble to recite
Our Persian manners, and our curse of Fate!

Ludi Apollinaris - Poetry |

Salvete, Quirites!
Since there work is being offered that is not the work of the citizen submitting it, I
thought I would put this piece before the people. I'm sure others have come across the
book this poem is from. _ The Hymns of Orpheus __ Mutations _ by R.C. Hogart (Phanes Press
1993) being renderings of the Orphic Hymns. It is copyrighted by R.C. Hogart and is used
here in reverence and with the wish to share with Nova Roma, during these Ludi
Apollinaris, the beauty that the author-poet crafted.
Apollo
Blessed singer,
smile on this song.
Illustrious power,
rape avenger,
God of shining health,
evergreen of wealth,
play your golden lyre.
Dragon slayer,
father of oracles,
archer with arrows of light,
sun prince of Muses,
drive away all diseases.
Golden haired wonder,
you see all within
and all beneath the sky.
Your omens guide us
to purity and goodness.
You watch ceaseless light
and the mysteries of Earth.
Your keen eyes pierce
silent night.
You are the root
of stars and space.
You inspire Nature's music
with your ringing lyre.
Seeds, plows,
flourishing fields
glistening at dawn,
belong to you.
You are dolphin,
bay and laurel.
You are palm tree
swan and hawk.
You are mouse and snake.
You are wolf and deer.
You are crow, raven,
grasshopper and griffin.
Always everywhere
you give subtle advice
through oracles, dreams
and bird flight.
Teach us the science
of harmonies and limits.
Tune winter's deep string
to spring's sweetness.
Strike summer's purest chord.
Let the wind song
of the syrinx sing
a dance for Pan.
Keeper of the seal
that stamps the world with forms,
hear our song
and save us.

Someone is taking the PM in vain.
Crys
<><><><><><><><><><>
A gospel of hatred
By Kirsten Scharnberg
Tribune Staff Writer
EAST PEORIA, Ill.--The young woman is quiet, shy, not terribly
articulate.
She was trying to explain why she hates Jews and blacks and
other "mud races," but World Church of the Creator disciple Christy
Weiss was stumbling.
It had something to do with how she loves white people, about how
she is interested in family trees and genetics, bloodlines and
ancestry. It is hard to explain, she admitted. She looked at the
ceiling, around the room, searching for words to explain the
inexplicable.
Finally, frustrated, she said that she should just stop talking. Her
public words would hurt her parents in suburban Chicago, would
make them more embarrassed than the first time she shaved her
head or the time she turned in a high school English paper about
the protection of hate speech under the 1st Amendment.
But Rev. Matthew Hale, the 27-year-old leader of the Illinois-based
white supremacist church that is said to be one of the fastest-
growing hate groups in the world, patted her arm and gently urged
her to continue.
"We need you to step up, Sister Christy," he said, his voice low
and intimate, his dark eyes probing hers. "It's your decision, of
course. But the church needs you to step up and be proud of who
you are. Sister, be proud of what you believe."
That is all it took. Just one deft nudge from the man his followers
call "Pontifex Maximus," the man they vow to obey when they sign
on as members of the World Church of the Creator, the man the
nation has watched for the past week defending a bible of racism
and a plot to systematically eradicate all Americans who are not
white.
Emboldened, Weiss began anew, proudly declaring herself a
"racially aware racist" and calling Ben Smith, the former church
member who allegedly went on a murderous shooting spree that
targeted racial and religious minorities before killing himself last
weekend, a "friend and martyr of the white race."
As the 20-year-old Glencoe native talked, Hale smiled.
But the scene, which unfolded in the living room of Hale's East
Peoria home--a dim room filled with stuffed animals, a Norman
Rockwell print, framed family pictures and piles of propaganda
advocating "A Whiter and Brighter World"-- represented far more
than an exchange between Hale and a follower. It illustrated the
larger questions being raised as authorities scrutinize the possible
connections between the church, its philosophy and the terror of
the past weekend:
How much power and control does Hale really have over his several
thousand church members? How much have his teachings about
hating non-whites influenced followers who subsequently have been
linked to violent actions? And how much if any responsibility does
Hale bear when some of his loyalists carry out horrible crimes
against those they have been conditioned to despise?
`Pontifex Maximus'
Inside the World Church of the Creator, where a Tribune reporter
spent portions of three days last week with Hale, the extremist
would-be lawyer and trained violinist appears to be largely a one-
man operation, exerting his hold over members by fax, phone,
computer and an occasional meeting. Last week, Weiss was the
only member on the scene who agreed to be interviewed, but Hale
said several other members had gathered privately for an
emergency update on the Smith case.
Hale is the self-appointed prime minister of the hate-based religion
founded in the mid-1980s by the late Ben Klassen, a German-born
white supremacist who later killed himself. Members are told that
Hale will one day lead them in a racial holy war that will change the
face of the United States.
According to the group's membership manual, they are to call one
another "brother" and "sister," and exchange greetings in Nazi
fashion with outstretched right arms, saying, "Rahowa," short for
"racial holy war."
"Pontifex Maximus Hale is a brilliant, wonderful man," Rev. Chris
Peterson, a church minister from Milwaukee, said in a phone
interview last week, his voice filled with reverence.
A dark, narrow set of stairs leads to Ground Zero of the World
Church of the Creator. The cramped room, situated on the second
floor of the East Peoria home Hale shares with his father, is
painted bright red to symbolize passion for the movement to
advance the white race as well as to reaffirm the church's
contention that "blood is thicker than water," Hale explained.
To enter the room, one has to step on the flag of Israel, which
bears the Jewish Star of David. Using the white and blue flag as a
rug is designed to remind followers that Jews are the "No. 1 enemy
of the church." The walls are covered with swastikas.
Hanging at the head of the room is the symbol of the church: a
crown and a halo hanging over a giant "W," meant to depict the
white race as the elite, chosen race, a race so perfect that it
deserves to be worshiped.
"Come on in," Hale said, and for all of the horrific, extremist views
he espouses, the slightly built man has honed an aura of
friendliness, confidence and hospitality. "You'll see we're just
working away here to get our message out."
Stance on violence
Inside the Red Room, the fax machine whirs, the room's two phone
lines ring constantly. If hate could be mass-produced, this little
room would be the hardest worker on the factory line.
At some point, almost everyone who comes to this place asks
Hale the same two questions: Does the church condone violence?
Does it condone the actions of Ben Smith, the former member who
allegedly bought two illegal guns, loaded up on ammunition and
targeted racial and religious minorities. Police believe he killed
former Northwestern University basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong,
an African-American, and Won Joon Yoon, a Korean-American,
and wounded six Orthodox Jews, two African-Americans and an
Asian-American.
"We do not condone that," Hale responded, but then he launched
into a diatribe about how he does not condemn such actions either.
"To condemn the act is to condemn the man," he said, "and I will
not condemn Brother Smith. He was a loyal church member, a
friend and a comrade. He was pushed to these actions. When
someone is continuously harassed as he was, the powers that be
cannot be surprised when someone explodes. It is inevitable."
It is this failure to condemn violence--at least a half dozen
members or former members across the country have been
charged in connection with racially motivated crimes--that has
caused federal and local authorities to look at whether Hale played
any role in the 4th of July weekend shootings.
Further, U.S. Atty. Gen. Janet Reno has indicated that the Justice
Department is considering launching an investigation into the
organization and its high-profile leader. And one of Smith's shooting
victims already has sued Hale and his church, in essence
accusing him not of throwing the bomb, but of creating the bomber.
Over the course of several days last week, Hale worked as his gray-
haired father, Russ Hale, watched television in the downstairs living
room.
Several members at other branches devote themselves to updating
the group's Internet site, which has several links designed to
appeal to young children. Hundreds more distribute massive
amounts of literature, especially the flier titled, "Facts the
Government and Media Don't Want You to Know," throughout the
Midwest.
Even though they are spreading the word at Hale's request, church
members, who already pay $35 dues each year, must purchase
from Hale all the literature they pass out.
The tables in the second-floor office of the Hale house are stacked
with copies of the church's two main bodies of literature: "The
White Man's Bible" and "Nature's Eternal Religion: A Powerful New
Religious Creed Structured for the Survival, Expansion and
Advancement of Nature's Finest." The "bible" costs $5, the other
tract $10.
Hale, who doesn't have a job and says he lives and travels on
donations from his members, chafes at the suggestion that he is
making money off his organization. "They don't print this stuff for
nothing," he said angrily.
Rev. Nick Houston, the minister who oversees the Sacramento
chapter, met his wife over the organization's hot line in Reno, he
said in a phone interview Friday.
The two were married in the church, he said, vowing to each other
and Hale to be loyal first to the white race, then to their marriage.
During the ceremony, the World Church of the Creator
minister asked, "Do you, racial white comrade Houston, take this
white woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
At 19, Houston is one of the youngest ministers in the church,
Hale said. His wife, Brandi, also 19, is one of the most active of the
group's sisters. They have a 7-month-old daughter and are waiting
for Hale to travel to California to baptize her, Houston said.
Houston, a salesman, said he ministers to more than 30 official
members in the Sacramento area. He said members socialize by
throwing children's birthday parties and having an annual back-yard
barbecue to commemorate Adolf Hitler's birthday.
Houston said he considered Smith "one of my closest comrades,"
and often talked with him over the phone.
In creating his church, Hale has adopted some of the rituals and
organizational structure of mainstream denominations. He says it
is an effort to mock what he and many of his followers call "Christ
insanity."
Passing the test
The church is set up under geographic areas overseen by church
elders who have been named "reverends" by Hale. To earn the title,
a minister must pass an extensive 200-point exam, which Hale
grades. Most have to take it more than once.
One of the exam questions asks about the church's official position
on Jews. The correct answer is, "There is no compromising, no
negotiating, no co-existence with the treacherous and diabolical
Jew." Other questions mock "befuddled whites," Christians and
African-Americans.
Peterson learned he had passed the exam in May 1998 in a letter
sent by Hale. It was signed, "Yours for a whiter world, Pontifex
Maximus Matt Hale," Peterson said.
"I am very proud to be a minister," Peterson, 31, said in an
interview last week. "I will do everything I can to live up to that.
P.M. Hale has honored me with this title."
In the ceremony that made Peterson an official minister, he had to
sign an oath swearing absolute "allegiance to Pontifex Maximus
Matt Hale and his duly appointed successors." As a minister,
Peterson is now authorized to perform some of the most holy
rituals of the World Church of the Creator's religion, including the
ceremony that all 13-year-old members have in which they are
deemed adults and publicly vow their loyalty to the cause and to
Hale.
In talking about his life since joining the church, Peterson
complained that he has been persecuted and fears for his life in the
same sentence that he talked about taking his hate-filled literature
into predominantly Jewish neighborhoods to "taunt those people."
He talked about teaching his 12-year-old son his racist ideals,
though he said he doesn't "force them on him or try to brainwash
him." He said he has nothing against Nazis or skinheads, though
they are "a little too violent for me."
And, like Hale, Peterson said that violence sometimes is
necessary, though only as a last resort. "If they try to take away
our guns or our right to freedom of speech, some people are going
to go nuts, kick ass and kill people," he said.
People like Peterson, Houston and Weiss are the face of today's
World Church of the Creator, and Hale treats them accordingly,
calling them often, befriending them as he did Ben Smith.
"I love my members as family," Hale said. "When they say they
are willing to follow the creed, to live by our rules, they become my
brothers and sisters."
The creed is simple. Sixteen hateful commandments. One is a
prohibition against "mongrelizing" the white race by procreating
with anyone not white. There is the demand to "Be fruitful and
multiply," thus populating "the lands of this earth with white people
entirely." And there is a reminder to treat all "inferior, colored
races" as "deadly enemies."
"Yes, I live by the commandments," Weiss said, and Hale nodded
approvingly.
"Of course I do," Peterson said, and Hale calls him a "devoted
brother and friend."
Pontifex Maximus is known to remind followers that their
membership will be revoked if they break any of his rules.

Falite,
in the celtic culture, comming of age was very important. i made
myself a ritual of this sort. stand for a medative vigil for an entire night,
and in the morning with the comming dawn make a oath to the Gods to honor
them, to your anestors to live through you and honor them, and to give
respect and reverence to the Land and the spirits that dwell within. i made a
small cut across my palm for the oath. do this standing over the fire. the
cut certinally is not nessicary, just an extra(just a note: i almost never,
ever use blood of any kind in a ritual)i hope i helped.

It seems that from review of the posts that there is little going on in the
way of the religio, perhaps with the exception of that which Crys is doing. I
recognize that many NR members are christians, jews, or other pagan variants.
It may be that concern for them distracts?
Does anyone know if the Julian Society has a less watered down view of the

Hm, I dunno about that. There are other things going behind the scenes, like
my application for Virgo Maxima in the process of processing. *grin* I also
inquired within about the augur position.

Maybe you should spend more time talking to people off of the lists... just
because it's not here, doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't anything.
Or... maybe those who *are* involved will speak up. I think that between the
games and the recent conflict(s), people are preoccupied temporarily with other
topics.
Just my opinion....

My understanding od the Julian Society is that is is an organization that M. Iulianus
Cassius, the NR PontMax, formed some time prior to the inception of NR. I do not know
how accurate this is. I'm not saying how or in what way it answers the question you
posed. I'm sharing what little I know on this subject with you. It has a website. Check
there. The website has been linked to Cassius gens via the Gentes page of the NR website.
In re. Religio going on here... the poems regarding Apollo are religious. As is the whole
poetry contest, even the poems that are not about Apollo. The games and the contest are
in honor of, and giving reverence to the God. I'm just saying that for anybody who came
in late. I'm sure you know it.

I am not sure about the Julian society, however there are others of us who
are working on items pertaining to the Relegio. For example I recently got an
online 'Temple' up to one of my patron deities, Castor and Pollux. It is a
ways from complete, but I have been working on it only for a few days. When I
am through there, I would be interested in collaborating with others in
bringing the Relegio online to honor other Gods. Granted having online
Temples is a small part of our worship, but given our current status it is
the only way in which us pagans can worship together. In the meantime anyone
who likes can visit the Temple I've created to leave prayers to the Twin
Gods, (
<A

official church within Nova Roma, as it has no official priest, etc. Also if
any one is interested in assisting with forming an online Temple to Janus
Pater, which I see being my next project(or if anyone is thinking of
something else), let me know, I'd love to have some assistance. Rather than
look for another organization, we should be trying to improve this one; which

Ok, ok! Here is Atticus writing. I think we could just stop all this
argument, before I feel compelled to add a dirty toga to the show.

The Julian Society is a pagan group. To my knowledge there are no
nonpagan members. Perhaps this will answer your question. For a more
accurate answer I would reccomend visiting the JS website and emailing its

Ave et Salve friend T. Horatius Atticus!
I wasn't talking about you! I should have said the friend of M. Tullius Cicero, Titus
Pompons Atticus. These Roman names can be dratted pesky at times. Gods! Now I'm going to
be attacked for saying something about the "consistency" of Roman naming practices!

Salvete Omnes.
Nova Roma, while being a micronation and a Roman Society and everything else
that that entails is also a large family. There are a large number of us
who have been here for over a year, and during that time we have developed
friendships. As in the case of Nocta and myself, we even became a couple
in, literally the Nova Roma Taverna. We are a family, therefore we do have
our disagreements, our congratualtions and our political debates out in the
open.
The Nova Roman list over the course of 16 months has seen alot. Jokes,
Arguements, insults, debates everything. It is not likely to change. While
at times there is an exchange of information about the ancients, it is not
just about that. The NR official list encompasses everything. While there
have been other mailing lists that have been sprouted in response to
excessive humor, humor does still exist occasionally on the main list.
Just bear in mind, that Nova Roma is a family, and being a family, similar
to ancient Roma, we share our successes and failures, our loves and our
broken hearts. Hell just ask Crys or C. Cornelius Mamertines or my other
son, Marcus Cornelius Felix, about the state I have been since this
rollercoaster ride I have been riding with my breakup with Augustina Iulia
Caesaria Nocturnia. I consider Nova Roma my extended family. That is why I
and other people share our feelings on the list.
On that note....I would like to thank everyone who assisted me in the past
few days....your words have been kind and have helped me during this painful
and stressful period. I know I will recover in time. Thank you again for
your support and kind words.

Dulcis Musa suum devenirem plorat
Plorare dulcis Amaricatae lacrimae
Milia memoriae quomodo pugionis feriendo
Pectum qui suspirat eas cum pulchra cantione
Lustrales oculi Laetus caerulus marinus
Flavi capilli Stricta cintura
Laeti iam plancto deditant
Iam tristes divinum fluvium vertendo
In suave sono caelesti solvendo
Gemitum delicatum Dolor augmentat
Fortunam sua non acceptando
Plangat pulcher flos immortale
Vano Amore qui Fortuna ei sustentat
Esse per vilem mortalem adamata
The sweet Muse cries her fate,
Sweet cry, bitter tears,
One thousand memories hurting like daggers
The chest that sighs them in a beautiful chant.
Bright eyes of cheerful marine blue,
Blond hair, thin waist,
Now the cheerful ones surrender to sorrow
And now sad, they shed a divine river.
Freeing in soft heavenly tone
A delicate moan, her grief grows
Not accepting her Fortune.
The beautiful flower cries, being immortal,
For a vain Love held by her Fate:
To be in love for a vile mortal.

Well, let me comment, that I did try to get her help....as a matter of fact on
the day her flight was scheduled to leave, her Father e-mailed me and said maybe
I should postpone the ticket and take her to a medical professional to get her
on some anti-depressants. I tried to take that advice, since I do have medical
insurance from Earthlink. I tried to postpone the ticket, when they said I
could only cancel it. becuase of only 6 hours notice, I tried to do
that....when I went back to the apartment and notified Nicola, she got irrate.
She stated, that she could never love me and that she hated me. I told her I
was only taking her fathers advice and she said she was going to call the Police
on me for kidnapping (which I was not kidnapping her, She could come and go
exactly as she pleased..and did) and for seducing a minor (which before she
came here my mother asked her parents for a signed consent form stating that
they knew exactly why she was coming here to get married, signed by her
father.) I tried everything in my power to help her get enrolled in school, to
help her get better mentally, and to provide a stable home of our own. Up til
the 28th day everything was going great. Now all I know is that she hates me.
But I dont and cannot ever hate her. My feelings to Nicola have not changed in
the least. I hope that one day soon she does get better. Her father has been
very nice and very honest with me in regards to this situation. He has
apologzied many times for Nicola, he is very sorry that this has happened. Him
and I have been communicating consistently during this up til this morning. Her
parents don't feel I have done anything wrong.

Salvete Omnes,
No Lucius I wasnt upset when I responded. I was just clarifing for the record.
:) I actually kinda expected criticism for trying to keep Nicola here, and for
following her fathers advice. But I was only doing it to help her. Not to trap
her here. I have striven to be a gentlemen from the moment she arrived. I
understand she had alot of stress with the move, but the wedding was going to
take place a year later. That way Nicola and I would have gotten to know each
other. I wasnt forcing anything. Other than her enrolling in school, which was
supposed to happen the Monday-Tuesday before she left, but I had to go to
Riverside, because my mom's medical condition. Despite that, I just enjoyed
having Nicola here being with me, more than words can say. And my feelings
havent changed since what happened.
