Subject: Applications for Priesthood!

Salvete Omnes,

I am pleased to report that some very much needed updating has been made to
the process for applying for official Priesthood position in Nova Roma.

New information has been posted in the "Priesthoods" pages, which are in the
"Pantheon" section of the Nova Roma site. This information contains the basic
requirements for Priesthood, as well as ten initial questions which
applicants should submit to the Pontifical College.

Absence of such clear procedures have been the cause of several
misunderstandings of late. For that I offer a personal apology for everyone
who has been inconvenienced. These new simple guidelines should make things
easier for everyone, and the application process itself faster. Even though
these new guidelines will not guarantee that all applicants will be accepted
the process itself will at least be more direct.

The Pontifical College has raised the point that it would probably be best
that anyone who has applied for a Priesthood position recently or in the
past, might be better off to resubmit their applications using the new
procedure. This does seem reasonable since it would clear the air and put
everyone on equal footing. I invite all Priesthood applicants to check out
the new system and send in a new application if they feel they can go with
the basic requirements for Priesthood.

If anyone has questions, please Email the entire Pontificial College at:
<a href="/post/--------roma?protectID=197233234165082131036102163219114090071048139" >po--------ices@--------</a> , or me perso--------y at <a href="/post/--------roma?protectID=137166066112082162090021200165114253071048139" >Cassius622@a...</a> .

The Religio Romana has been rather pushed into the background during all the
political crises that Nova Roma has faced. At last there is a good
opportunity for those Citizens interested in the Religio to be able to become
more involved if they wish!

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus
Pontifex Maximus
(on behalf of the Collegium Pontificum)

Salvete, populares!

(Culled from the (Londinium) Times yesterday:

"ROME'S FIRST LEGEND IS THROWN TO THE WOLVES

"(from John Phillips in Rome)

"If Romulus and Remus set out to found the city that became Rome, someone
was there before them.

"Archaeologists excavating ruins in the vast Forum of Caesar have discovered
four tombs dating to the 9th or 10th centuries BC, indicating that Rome was
founded up to 200 years before the fablesd twin set to work after being
suckled by a she-wolf.

"The discovery was made by archaeologists led by Silvana Rizzo, working for
the city's archaeological and heritage officials. The work is partof
preparations for the Jubilee Year that the Pope has called in the Eternal
City to mark the start of the third Christian Millennuim.

"The tombs were found behind the Capitoline Hill during digging under a
square in front of the Renaissance church of Saints Luca and Martina. One
tomb has been opened: it is an oval-shaped ditch and was found to contain a
funeral urn of a kind considered typical of the period between the 9th and
10th centuries BC in Latium, the ancient centre of Italy that is now the
region of Lazio surrounding and including Rome.

"Also inside the tomb were several vases and miniature ceramic pots of the
same epoch that archaeologists said were typical of items buried with young
men.

"Officially, Romae was founded on April 21, 753 BC, when Romulus and Remus,
the abandoned sons of Mars and a vestal virgin, were believed to have
created the city."

- Personally, I hardly consider that 4 tombs really constitute a city
pre-existing the Romulan foundation. Having said that, their chronology does
take the whole thing back rather closer to the fall of Troy. Were the bones
of Aeneas and his family ever moved from Alba Longa? I wonder if all four
tombs will prove to be of typical archaic Latin type, or will there be some
evidence of Dardanian/Mycenean funeral practice? I'll keep you posted if I
discover more details.

Bene valete,

Vado.

Salvete Omnes!

I just wanted to let everyone know that these prayers from the plays of
Plautus have been added to the Religio Romana section of the web site.
And... WOW... these things are excellent! Nicolaus' work should stand as an
example of the way that primary sources can be used in reconstructionist
pagan faiths. Well done!

Salvete!

I did this, and had my email returned to me, "user unknown." I copied and
pasted the email exactly as it was from the website.

Suggestions? :)

I just wanted to let everyone know that there is now a web-based form for
priesthood applications, similar to that for citizenship applications.
Hopefully, this will make the process easier for all concerned.

Try it -------- There was a temporary problem with the <a href="/post/--------roma?protectID=197233234165082131036102163219114090071048139" >po--------ices@--------</a>

Salvete,

Would all the individuals who are currently holding positions in the
government (as magistrates, scribae, lictores, priests, etc.) please email
me and let me know what vanity email address you'd like to have? (Just like

Subject: Imperium
From: David Meadows dmeadows@--------

[mehercule! My scribe misscripted the address ... a week in the ergastula
for him!]

A quick respectful note from a citizen candidate before dashing off to
another lacus for the day:

Q. Fabius scripsit inter alia:

II. Investing Imperium.
In the republic, Imperium was invested by Comitia Curiata. Curiata comes
from the 30 wards (curiae) from the three original Roman tribes. This was
simple matter of paying lip service to the elected officials. None of any of
the extant Roman writers to which we have access today, speaks about the
Curiata with holding the confirmation of Imperium. It probably couldn't be
done.

Respondeo:

It strikes me that this is precisely what happened with Marius/Metellus in
107 when the people essentially ignored the senate's desire to prolong
Metellus' command (i.e. his imperium); the CC isn't specifically mentioned
(nor is any other comitia, as far as I'm aware), but it seems to me that
this was a likely 'mechanism of the ignorance' ... even if it wasn't,
however, the simple fact that it might have never happened in Roma antiqua
does not mean it might not happen in NovaRoma under the scenario I
mentioned alia die ...
