We live in Delaware. That's just a hop, skip, and a jump from here, and
I think face-to-face is vital for any organization hoping to flourish
and grow... Besides, Atlantic City sounds fun. :)

The site of the listings sometimes falls behind, but the listings
themselves have always been available via email as well
(<a href="mailto:awotv-subscribe@--------" >awotv-subscribe@--------</a>). The 'This Day ...' feature will be returning
September 1 (I'm working on features for that right now).
That said, I'm hoping to update the website shortly (it depends on when
everyone wakes up!).

When I go to your AWOTV page it has the listings for *July 5-11*. I
remember the site
from a while ago and it was great fun. As was the today in the ancient
world page. It is
obviously under construction, but those July listings make me wonder about
when the site
will be up and running again. Could you give an estimate?

An item of interest from my newsletter:
In what is probably the big news of the day, the Independent reports on
research which suggests the bathing complex at Bath wasn't built by the
Romans at all, but by a local Celtic chieftain (this one will expire!):

A Critical English Translation by Andrew Dalby
This work of Cato the elder is essential to our understanding of
classical Roman domestic economy, as well as being the first extended
Latin prose work to have
survived to this day. This is a new translation and detailed commentary
composed with a mind to the culinary and cultural historian, who may not
be familiar with the
byways of early roman agriculture. Andrew Dalby is the author of Siren
Feasts, a book on classical Greek cookery.
Cato has information for everyone: on planting and maintaining
olive groves, on supervising the staff, on making various loaves or
gruels out of grains, on the
manifold curative properties of cabbage, on getting good prices at
market, and much, much more. Prospect Books, London 130 x 220 mm. 243
pages. Illus.
Paper $24.00

Salvete, NR Friends;
The proposal for the subject event certainly has my enthusiastic
agreement, and it is my belief that it should be attempted sometime in
early winter 1999 or late winter / early spring 2000 since it wil be
essentially an indoor event. Most re-enactors are scheduled for
week-end events from mid-Spring to late fall and my schedule is no
different..
I would suggest from my calendar the following dates (Note that these
are from my own calendar and others may have a different view):
--26-27-28 November, 1999;
--10-11-12 December, 1999 (At ths point I think anything later in
December would interfere with previously planned season festvities);
--31 December / 1-2 January, 2000;
--7-8-9 January, 2000;
--13-14-15 January, 2000;
--24-25-26 January, 2000;
--20-21-22 January, 2000;
--11-12-13 February, 2000;
--25-26-27 February, 2000.
The above dates, I have made no commitments for, and so are currently
free dates for me. March becomes pretty stiff with usually 3 of four
weekends committed to annual meetings of the regiments that I belong to,
and early indoor activities beginning the new re-enacting season. April
begins the Re-enactor Season in which I spend 2 to 4 weekends a month
through Mid-November involved in F&I, Rev War, and Civil War Events in
the Northeast and in NewYork and New Jersey.
For any who are interested, my re-enactment schedule for the remainder
of the year it is herein included. If any would wish to visit me at any
of these events, I should be most pleased to conduct you on a tour of
the event site:
--21-22 August--Manchester , CT --Wicham Park; Federal Chief Engineer
and Battle Narrator;
--28-29 August--Borderlands State Park near Easton, MA, Federal Engineer
and Battle Narrator;
--04-05 September--Heritage Plantation, Sandwich, MA, Chief Federal
Engineer, and Battle Narrator;
--17-19 September--Cold Spring Village, Cape May, NJ--British Royal
Engineer and Military Observer. possibly Battle Narrator;
--2-3 October--Smith-Harris House East Lyme, CT (evening of the
2nd)--Major ofFederal Engineers in period skits in an evenig walk
through at the house;
--2 October--Goshen, CT Fairgrounds British Crown Engineer and Adjutant
of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment (Black Watch)--Encampment and weapon
demontrations;
--9-10 October--East Haddam, CT--Weekend Raid on the town by British
Troops-two skirmishes, formal Ball, parade Sat Evening, and Dinner;
--23-24 October--Wayne NJ,, Dye Mansion
Crown Engineer, Adjutant (42nd) and Battle Narrator both days;
--06-07 November--Hope Lodge, Fort Washington, PA, Crown Engineer,
Adjutant (42nd) and Battle Narrator both days;
--Will be in NW Missouri (Milan, MO) from 15 Nov. to 19 Nov. Anyone
interested in visiting from that neck of the woods is most welcome. Let
me know and I will provide directions
I am sure that all of the above is off-topic, but the information will
enable any of you who would wish to have a face-to-face meeting to do
so.
In my estimation, the next step is to narrow the list down to two dates
which will accomodate the largest number of people and then check those
dates against the availability of facilities in or around Atlantic City
for the best possible rates. Once that is done, reservations may be
made an a program drawn up for the weekend.. My wife who is a travel
agent would be willing to assist in that endeavor as needed.
If you will all include in your letters and date lists, some things that
you would like to do in the program, it would make it easier to put
together. Thank you for your kind consideration of this message.
Vale, NR Friends
Respectfully;

A meeting of NovaRoma at Caesars Atlantic City
sounds great to us of Legion XXIV.
However, do not show up in Roman attire.
I did that about two years ago and the management
and security were not amused. They may advertise
the "Glory of Ancient Rome", but don't come
dressed as a Roman !
You may be able to pre-arrange a meeting in Roman
attire through their promotions department, especially
if several "room nights" in their hotel is involved.
It sure would make the gathering much more meaningful
to all who attended.
Parking is $2.00 flatrate in their garage and they are
located directly off the end of the Atlantic City Expressway.
Caesar and Cleopatra, along with a Centurion
(in Hollywood costumes) are normally wandering about
for atmosphere.
It would be natural for a meeting of NovaRoma.
Check out our Website <a href="http://www.legionxxiv.org" target="_top" >http://www.legionxxiv.org</a>
It is loaded with links to other roman legions, suppliers
and contacts, along with historical roman organizations
and data. Our "Links" page and Roman Names" page
is quite comprehensive. Take a look.
Looking forward to maybe seeing some of you
at Caesars Atlantic City; I remain as always,
Tuus in Sodalicio Respublica Romanae
Yours in the Comradeship of the Roman Republic
Gallio / George

Avete Omnes!
Piperbarbus Ullerius Venator, Dominus Sodalis scribbles:
I have just obtained a new recipe book, translated from the Italian.
"A Taste of Ancient Rome" by Ilaria Gozzini Giacosa (tr. Anna Herklotz)
ISBN: 0-226-29032-8, University of Chicago Press, paperback edition of 1994
I'll quote part of a review printed on the back cover: "For the adventurous
"A Taste of Rome" is a fascinating and lively account of an Italy before
tomatoes, peppers, pasta or espresso." - J. Seymour
Apicius, Cato, Juvenal, Seneca, Seutonius, amongst others, are the sources
used.
At first glance, I think I've tumbled into a good resource. Anyone else
read and used this book?
Also, Dex, I found a quote about the possibility that some sort of pastas
were used and made in classical times. On page 41 of "The Italian Gourmet"
by Giorgio Mistretta the Etruscan "Tomb of Reliefs" in Cerveteri is
referenced as containing a stucco bas-relief of tools recognizable by their
use even today: the table and rolling pin for making the flat sheets of
pasta (which is simply a pasty dough of flour and water) and the fluted
wheel for cutting the edges.
If anyone is interested in joining the Sodalis, write to me.

I would be more than happy to venture down to Frantic City for an event!
After all, NJ and PA are two of the most populous states within Nova Roma; I
think such a meeting would be very popular. (Plus, there's always the D.C.
area, which is also really well-represented, and even folks from NY would
find it not too arduous a journey). Wonderful idea!
Now, what's latin for "autocrat"? So far, it seems to be "aedile"...
Vale,

Now THAT's a terrific idea! We could get the hotel involved in the whole
thing; hey, if we have our IRS nonprofit status by then, maybe they'd
officially sponsor the gathering with discounted room rates?
If nothing else, maybe we could get a notice on the sign out front. Seminars
(ranging from the scholarly "Archaeological Excavations of Hadrians Wall" to
the more prosaic "How to make a Toga" workshop), movie rooms ("Ben Hur",
"Spartacus", "Quo Vadis?"); the mind boggles. Anyone have any experience
dealing with conventions in hotels? I am serious; this could be a really
really big event!
Very enthused,
Vale,
Flavius Vedius Germanicus
