Actually I have been way ahead of you here. I met and have been speaking
with Caesar Palace Los Vegas' convention coordinator about holding a world
wide Roman Days at the Palace. He was very enthused about the idea. The
next question will be if the casino owners go for it. If they do, then it'll
be what exactly can we do for Caesar's to "sing for our supper" so we get
free lodging.

- thank you for this, Papiri Iuste. The Aquae Sulis is one of all the places
on Tellus Mater's good self, closest to my heart.

It strikes me, though, that any 'Celtic chieftain' civilized enough to build
thermae was also really a 'Roman'. Any barbari out there care to comment?
Vercingetorix? ;-P

BTW, does anyone know if our cultural ancestors ever drank their bathwater
for medicinal purposes (as, for example, people have been doing at Bath
since the Restoration?

Another thought, Populares: if you ever visit the Aquae and drink the water,
don't be tempted to mix it with your wine. It makes it taste TERRIBLE!

Bene valete,

Vado.

Many Irish would cringe to hear you say that. :)

Salve Germanicus,

It sounds like Nova Roma is alive and well in the Eastern Provincia.
I am a realatively new citizen living in Astroccidentalis Provincia and hope that we can follow suite. I have take the name Giaus Africanus Germanicus and would appreciate any information on the Gens Germanicus. I selected this Cognomen because of my germanic roots, and the Nomen Africanus because of my military service in Africa and the Gens Africanus is from my birthplace, N.J

As some of you are aware of, Helena Equitia Ovidia and I have been
dating exclusively for 3 weeks. And, since August 8, Helena has been
staying with me at my apartment. We are very much in love with each
other and we both feel that there is a future for us. With that in
mind, as of October, Helena will be moving in permanently with me. We
both wanted to share our happiness with everyone in Nova Roma.

- I think the archaeologists are still out on this one. The utensils _could_
equally well have been for making pie cases as for ravioli - or used for
both, even.

On the subject of possible pasta, I found this recently: 'Collyrae' and
'Collyrium' (Plautus, 'Persa', ll. 92 and 95,97). In the Loeb Classical
Library version I have it's translated as
'macaroni' and 'macaroni broth', but the Greek 'KOLLURAI' (from which my
dictionary says it derives, means 'small round cakes'. Are we talking
minestrone or croutons here? Does anyone know?

Valete bene,

If this was scheduled right I might even be able to get out there
and then fit in a couple of days to see my father. I would just need to
know when this was no later than the beginning of December. Large
hotel thing or a household event really makes no difference to me-- it's
about time more of us got to meet and have a little fun.

Hmmm-- maybe some people would talk to each other the way they do
in the emails here and we could have a modern gladatorial event to boot.
I get first dibs on being the official bookmaker of the event. But alas,
some modern people are opposed to bloodshed. Got it--- we'll modernize
the whole deal with stun batons instead of swords. Maybe a regular
cattle prod could be a good substitute for a trident.. Could certainly
put us on World News Tonight if it happened in the middle of Caesars
Palace. LOL.

Seriously though, if we ever did have an event in a hotel or some
kind of center where the general public was welcome and we got even a
small article in a newspaper or on tv locally it could be of great
benefit and start increasing interest in Nova Roma exponentially.

Most excellent! And Las Vegas is as good a choice as any for a worldwide
convention; the air fare is relatively low, hotels are relatively cheap, and
the food is positively bottom-dollar (and top notch!). I know that a Star
Trek club I'm affiliated with (with half as many members as we have) managed
it and they had a wonderful time.

But that doesn't preclude having an East Coast gathering at Caesar's
Atlantic City as well... I know I'd go to both!

Subject: Announcement for the Vacant Consul Position
From:

Salvete Omnes.

I stand as Candidate for the vacant seat of Consul. I feel that serving
as
Quaestor and Praetor Urbanus these last two years in NR has made me
uniquely
qualified to serve as Consul for the remaining 5 months. It would be an

honor for me to serve my Nova Roma as Consul.

Consul Decius Iunius Palladius and I have been in communication
over the past few weeks concerning this very issue. Consul Palladius
and I have
been good friends for over a year and a half. It was he who persuaded
me to run for Praetor Urbanus last year. I trust and respect him
immensely. Together, he and I have formed a close bond due to the
marriage between our gens members, Amethyest Iunia-Cornelia Crystallina
and Gaius Cornelius Mamertines. But, beyond that, we both are able to
communicate without any animosity between us. Already, we have begun
the process of
preparing various lexes to be proposed to the People's assembly and the
Senate of Nova Roma. And, I promise to you, the People, that I will
work
toward returning your most important confidence in this, the Government
of
Nova Roma.

Because without confidence in our elected officials what will we all
become?

May all of our Gods bless Nova Roma.

L. Cornelius Sulla
Paterfamilias of the Gens Cornelia
Praetor Urbanus et Senator
