Subject: My response to Nocta's announcement

Salvete Omnes.

While I did offer assistance to Nocta in regards to the announcement. I
feel that after some of the posts it is necessary for me to make my own
comment. First off. I believe this post is relevent to Nova Roma for
only the degree that Nicola and I would have never met if itwasnt for
Nova Roma. Our friendship, relationship....and my proposing to her all
happened in Nova Roma. Therefore, something as abrupt as our "end"
should also be posted in Nova Roma. Now, I am going to say for
everyone, the breakup wasnt my idea at all. I am in love with Nicola.
I am still in love with her....When I proposed to her and she accepted
that was something was more important to me than I can say in words.
Nicola has been here for 30 days. During that course up til about 48
hours ago, she didnt at all state any dissatisfaction with me, with
being here and with our relationship. 48 hours before she left, she got
really distant, wouldnt talk to me...and when I finally did all that she
said is that she is not mature to handle the move....that she still
loves me and that it wasnt me. So, I went to her father. Primarily to
get advice, his opinion, his thoughts. Now, I have been in
correspondance with her father throughout this. Her father said I
should either try to postpone the ticket or let her go. He said about
postponing the ticket because she suffers depression and he knows that
she loves me and he felt that she could get treatment her in the States
better than in England. I told her father I was in this for the long
haul, that I love his daughter and I tried to postpone the ticket, since
it was the last day, no postponement allowed, so I tried to cancel the
ticket....well that didnt go over well....but actually the ticket wasnt
cancelled. So Nicola, to make a long story short, freaked out. This is
the part where I expect to get criticized, but I only wanted to help her
cure her illness and to be with me....the person she said she loves, but
she didnt want too. And that is how it ended. So, let me reiterate.
This breakup wasnt what I wanted at all. She was home, she was home
with me. But, Nicola told me she didnt like it here. I still Love
Nicola Dunn with all my heart. I will cherish every memory I have being
with her. Thank you F. Claudia whereever you are for getting Nicola and
myself together.

Vale

The habit of exagerating one's statements and extracting from them
self-excogitated consequences are adecquate in a court, but not here. This
wouldn't be fair with me, who lacks your logical and rhetorical abilities
(not to mention the language: writing English is far from beeing simple to
me).

Let me say something a propos the cultural variety of Nova Roma, which
includes the north-american culture, as I can see it from the postings in
this list. Some of your letters are just rude: that is, too direct, too
unpleasant. I don't know if you, people, realize it, or if its cultural --
it can be both, for there are unpleasant cives in the USA provinciae as in
Europe, or in Brazil. But, in general, it seems to me like the messages
from the USA are unfriendly. Some members from Brasil with whom I talked
left the list and NR for reasons like that: "they don't seem to be very
friendly" or "this is a only-for-north-americans-group". With the time I
understood it WAS cultural: not exactly rudeness, I think, but directness,
objectivity.

So, that was the background of my saying that:
"saying something 'not
very pleasent' seams to be part of the american way of life".
It was not very pleasant, I know, but it is true for me. And it was not
meant to be offensive, neither. But Probus' praise of such a rude letter was
excessive for me. I agree with you though that it could have come in a
better occasion.

Cultural heritage, well understood.

I would like to insist, for the last time, on the subject. Someone,
quotting a letter from mine, charged me with racism. As I wouldn't like to
see my name involved with this infamous accusation anymore, let me say
something personal in my deffense. The only Portuguese in my family is my
paternal grandfather, the rest of it is German. So I simply could not be a
latin-racist or extremist or such. I possibly haven't got a single drop of
latin blood in my veins, considering the gothic invasion of Iberia. I am not
such an idiot to deffend values as race or blood. That was TOTALLY out of
question in my postings.

Ex positis, I am very proud of my latin cultural heritage, which has such a
colourful expression here in multiculural Brasil. Perhaps the expression
"Latin Brotherhood", which was used in the context of a call for help for
the Timorense people, could be associated with racism and not with
fraternity to a related culture. It was not intentional.

I won't continue the discussion.

Salvete!

Bowing to popular demand...

Horace came into some money, and had an extravagant thought. He decided to
commission an entire set of Samian banqueting ware with each piece embossed
with texts from Book Two of the Aeneid, as a compliment to his friend
Virgil. When the 500-piece set was delivered, Horace lost no time in
inviting his friends Maecenas and Virgil to dinner.

Virgil was impressed, and not a little moved at his friend's tribute.
Maecenas was rather jealous. He eyed the expanse of expensive crockery as
they dined, looking for something about it to criticise.
It seemed faultless. There were even little saucers for sweetened, preserved
fruit. Then Maecenas noticed one of these little saucers in front of him was
empty. The slaves had neglected to put anything in it. He traced the text
around the edge: 'Proximus ardet Ucalegon'.*
At last!

Suppressing an evil smirk, Maecenas said:

"I don't mean to be captious, Flacce,** but there's something missing from
this saucer."

Virgil craned his neck to look over the table.

"You want 'jam' on it," he said.*** ****

* "[the house of] Ucalegon is ablaze" (Aeneid, Book 2, line 418).

**'Flacce' = vocative form of 'Flaccus', Horace's cognomen.

***'jam' = 'already' (line 418 should read 'jam proximus ardet Ucalegon'
("already [the house of] Ucalegon is ablaze").

**** jam = a sweetened preserve of fruit.

Valete bene,

Vado.

Salvete omnes,

Vado's latest reminds me of something from my schooldays (we started latin
at age 9, so were about at this humour-level, but I think this had been in
circulation for quite a while before I heard it):

Caesar adsum jam forte
Brutus aderat
Caesar sic in omnibus
Brutus sic inat

I guess my network just will not read my tribe. I can see everyone
else's but mine. I can read Decius Iunius Palldius' tribal number of
23, and Lucinia Iunia Cypria 's nymber of 9( I fall in between these
two). I can my century number of 106 and my points of 12, but again I
can not read by tribal number.

Salvete Omnes....

I know that with the elections winding down....everything is starting to hopefully to get back to a sense of normalcy.....But what I really wanted to let everyone know is that beginning on Monday through Wednesday Sept 13-15. I will be unavailable. During that time....Helena Equitia Ovidia and I will be heading to Roseville to gather her belongings because she is Moving in with me! :) We will be computerless during that time....and we should be back sometime Wednesday Evening. We will try to check in if we get the chance but that is highly unlikely since Helena believes her internet connection has been cancelled. So I just wanted to drop off a note to the list.

As soon as I am able, once I have returned I will state my Oath of Office....Since I will be unable too while I am away from the Computer.

Salvete, omnes!

<< As soon as I am able, once I have returned I will state my Oath of Office....Since I will be unable too while I am away from the Computer. >>

Which brings up something I've been wondering about...In what manner will the Comitia Curiata grant the incoming magistrates imperium?

And as long as I'm asking about the Curiata...I've read several books which mention a Curio Maximus, who would seem to be the 'president' of the Curiata...is this correct, and if so will the members of this particular Comitia elect this official?

And last but not least, what about the other two Comitiae, the Comitia Calata and the Comitia Sacerdotum?

Valete,
Gnaeus Tarquinius Caesar
