To Palladius;

Salve, Consul Palladius;

Sir: Since the Roman republic required ten years service for it's
Magistartes and since we are dedicated o restoring the Republic to the
degree that we can, I see nothing surprising in the numbers of military
men in NR. The naton's (any nations) military service is an honorable
service and a way for healthy youg men and woment to serve their
country, without a great deal of preparation over and above the norm.
Like ancient Rome the military service offers certain rewards for
successful service and the opportunity for leadership and authority at
an early age, in proceeding with the protection of our nation. I
believe that all those attributes were strongly advocated by the Roam
Republic and was also a reason why so many people of like mind are here.

There are of course those who do not agree with me for several different
reasons and I fully agree that the ways to NR as the ways to Leadership
and Organization may have as many roads as there are indviduals, but
it still remains that we can maintain the largest effective fleet, army,
air force, marines and Coast Guard in the world without a conscription
law. As I have indicated in the past there must be "something" to it.

Vale, Consul Palladius;
Very Respectfully;
Marcus Minucius Audens

Salvete
Today I began my quest for the Praetorship. After serving as your Curule
Aedile for several months now, I'm ready to take the next step on the cursus
honorum, though I skipped a few steps (Senator and Quaestor).
First off, apparently my opponent is proud of his military background.
While I was never in the military I was an "air force brat." This means I
was born in a military hospital (Berlin, Germany) and spent most of my early
life in assorted Air Force bases. So I know the military. My father was a
Col. (Full Bird) and my mother was first in law enforcement, later became a
social resource lawyer for the state of CA after my father retired here. So
I know a lot of about process of law.
I received a classical education, learning the arts, Latin, History and
Literature and for an elective I studied comparative religion. This gave me
a unique perspective on religions. So much so that I became a hedonist in my
middle 20s which lead to my conversion to paganism in my late 20s. I
possesses BA, MA in history and a BA in film.
I won't bore you with details of my current mundane life as a producer in
L.A. But you may have some interest in my historical background. I worked
on several digs in Greece, Cyprus, and spent a summer at Masada. I wrote
several papers, and postulated Roman Battlefield relief through the files,
and not the manipular gaps as many scholars believe. I have written several
books on Ancient Military warfare, translated monographs on Byzantine
military manuals and edited manual on ancient sea warfare. I taught a class
for two years on galley warfare, concentrating on the Hellenistic period. I
edit two newsletters one on ancient military warfare, the other for Women in
Theatre in L.A.
As military simulations designer I have collaborated in the design of
numerous board games. I won the Charles Roberts Award for best Design in
board games for my Napoleonic game "La Bataille de la Moskova," which I
shared with another designer. In Historical miniature gaming I wrote
several rule sets which have been well received by the gaming community. My
current project is designing a set of WWI miniature rules.
If this doesn't prove that I'm organized, disciplined and have the
ability to accomplish several tasks at once I don't know what will.
Currently I'm the p/t director of the DBBG, the publicity organ of the
Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, in Wilmington CA.
I used to be an ACW reenactor but retired from the field after 35 years
of age. I think that we send the wrong message to the interested public,
when we field the old guys, since in reality the average ACW rank and file
was 19-23. An average ACW reenactment has the average age of the rank and
file of 36 years old. That is why I retired, to now lead my brigades in
miniature.

Salvete.
In August 1998 I joined Nova Roma. My gens was a plebeian one. By
Vedian decree it was raised to Patrician for service to Nova Roma in August
of '99.
At first I started out as a "know it all" i.e. gently pointing out
mistakes in procedure and Roman history to all who cared to read about them.
As my "comfort zone" increased I became more savvy with where my interests
lay, and how I could best serve NR. I was appointed Flavia Claudia's civil
law committee, and stayed with after Tellius the former Tribune of the
Plebeians took it over, later dissolve it before he resigned.
I foresaw that Roma would need a due structure, and after a fervered
speech in the Forum convinced L. Cornelius Sulla, and later M. Muincius
Audens to draft proposed leges to cover the neglect. After we spent several
weeks writing the proposal the Cassian Senate tabled the item. I developed
and with the aid of the Plebeian Aedile put on virtual games for the glory of
the gods, and entertainment of NR. I have also developed and with the help
of L. Cornelius Sulla, started the first of several proposed "teaching aids":
virtual historical campaigns set in Ancient Rome. As part of my duties as an
Aedilis, I have started three virtual constructions, The Arena, a Temple to
Vesta (My Patron) and Fortuna (my favorite!).
With the coming of the Constitutional "wars" I spent that fateful day
with Iunia manning the "backalley" list informing the different members of NR
what was happening in NR when the onelist was closed down. I was on line
with Iunia almost 9 straight hours.
During this time and the following three days I NEVER gave up on NR. I
never resigned my citizenship, and I never stopped praying to the gods.
(This is how the construction of the temple to Vesta started. Results of a
vow.)
I wish to work with the other Praetor Marcus Mucius Scaevola in defining
a civil law structure for NR. (Our table of XII, so to speak.) He has
already made an excellent start on the rather voluminous subject. And any
citizen that would need me to represent them in the court consider, I'm an
excellent debater, I placed in the "masters" category all three seasons in
HS, and I speak very well.

Salvete Qvirites,

I would like to express my gladness that Marcus Minucius Audens decided
to run for the office of Praetor.
That man have made a lot for Nova Roma. His valuable notes on the list,
ineresting sciences he shared to all of us both through the Eagle and
the list cultivated many times discussions there and his polite and
respectfully behaviour could be shown as an example.
There are many of us in Nova Roma, who speaks only, but Audens is a man
of the action. He is always ready to participate in and to take great
part of the task (just remember the Eagle story). And one more note
about Audens: he was never afraid to recogize the arguments of his
opponents and to appologize for any misunderstandings.
Thatswhy I will vote you Marcus Minucius Audens and apply to all the
goodwill Romans to support you.

I am happy that you liked Brussels. The Belgians are normally very "tourist"
friendly with the Flemish being fluent in at least 4 languages.
If you ever make it this way again, I'll send you a list of Roman
archaeological sites to visit. A Roman road goes straight through Belgium
and now there are quite a few Gallo- Roman museums built along the way.
Best wishes,

Hello friends,
As the new girl on the block, I am a bit confused by all of the political
titles and nominations, etc.
Is Nova Roma made up predominantly of people on the email? If so, then
what/who are the political officials actually officiating over? (No offence
meant, I am just trying to understand the "big picture")

And where do most of the members live? I am assuming the US, but it's
a big country..... Do the members actually ever get the chance to meet
eachother?

And a more fun question: I see that there are quite a few linguists on this
list, I would like a bit of help with my Roman name: My grandparents moved
from Sicily to the US in 1915 or so, and our name was anglicized to "Agate".
We are named for the semi-precious stone "agate" and so in Sicily our name
was either "Agata" or "Agati"(I'm not sure). I have read that a few thousand
years ago, the agate stone was called "Achates" (after the river of the same
name) but I am not sure if that is Latin or Greek.... Any help would be
appreciated. Since my name has a history to it, I would like to Latinize it
for my Roman name.
Thanks!
Joanne

Sulla:
As far as I am aware of, Nova Roma already had that. I remember it being
there since I bought some books there. M. Cassius, do you have any more
information about this?

Cassius:
Yes, there is a "Nova Roma Bookstore" set up right in the Macellum section of
the Nova Roma website. It's been there almost since the day of founding, and
is indeed a link to Amazon.com which provides a kickback to the NR treasury.

Also, the Macellum site is the already existing place where Roman related
businesses can be listed in return for a portion of sales going to the NR
treasury. We have a link to JBL statues there, and of course the two existing
members of the Ordo Equester.

Just as a reminder, anyone wanting to start their own Roman business should
contact the Censors. Once approved they can have a link in the Macellum site,
get ads in "The Eagle", etc! :)

Vale,

Marcus Cassius Julianus

...et respondeo:

I have actually been looking into something like that for several
months, ever since Flavia Claudia pointed me at the Texas Veterans'
Land Program. Every four to six months, the Veterans' Land Board holds
a sealed-bid auction for various parcels of forfeited land, none under
five acres. I've searched the land database and found several
promising tracts near Conroe (halfway between Houston and Dallas) and
Wichita Falls (near the Oklahoma border). There is a minimum bid for
each parcel. The veteran submits a $10 bid fee and $360 for closing
costs; and if he or she submits the winning bid, the Land Board will
finance the land purchase, no down payment required.

The last auction was in April, and the patches of land I was looking at
are still available. Now all I have to do is quit being poor so's I
can get those fees in... >({|;-)

Subject: ATTN: EDICT FOR THE COMITIA CENTURIATA
From: Lucius Cornelius Sulla alexious@--------
Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 23:42:03 -0700
Salvete Cives Novae Romae!

The auspices having been taken and the omens being good, I hereby
announce that the Comitia Centuriata will be convened three days from
now, at 2300 (11:00 PM) on Thursday, September 30, 1999, to vote on the
following items:

1. Filling the vacant seat of Praetor.*

Candidates:

Quintus Fabius Maximus
Marcus Minucius Audens

* Please note that all magistrates are bound by the Edicta issued by
Consul Decius Iunius Palladius, dated September 6, 1999. That Edicta
concerned all magistrates taking the Oath of Office.

2. To vote on the following law:

Lex Iunia Cornelia de Patrumfamiliae Matrumfamilaeque Aetate

This law shall regulate the minimum age at which a citizen may become
the paterfamilias or materfamilias of a new Nova Roman gens.

I. Any person 15-17 years of age may not form a new gens and become its
paterfamilias or materfamilias. He or she must join an existing gens
until the age of 18.

II. If, for whatever reason, an underage citizen is the sole remaining
person in his or her gens, then that person will be considered, within
Nova Roma, sui iuris (free of the authority of a paterfamilias or
materfamilias) and able to assume the position of paterfamilias or
materfamilias and the leadership of his or her gens.

III. All citizens aged 15-17 who, at the time of the passage of this
law, already hold the position of paterfamilias or materfamilias of a
gens shall be exempt from its provisions.

IV. Under extraordinary circumstances, an exemption to this law may be
granted to an individual by the approval of both censors and a special
senatus consultum approved by a two thirds majority vote.

V. The censors shall be charged with the enforcement of this law as part
of their duty of reviewing and processing new citizenship applications
and requests to form new gentes.

3. To vote on the following law:

Lex Iunia de Iusiurando

I, __enter legal and Roman name here____________do hereby solemnly swear
to uphold the honor of Nova Roma, and to act always in the best
interests of the people and the Senate of Nova Roma.

As a magistrate of Nova Roma, I, _______________________ swear to honor
the Gods and Goddesses of Rome in my public dealings, and to pursue the
Roman Virtues in my public and private life.

I, ___________ swear to uphold and defend the Religio Romana as the
State Religion of Nova Roma and swear never to act in a way that would
threaten its status as the State Religion.

I, _____________________swear to protect and defend the Constitution of
Nova Roma.

I, _____________________further swear to fulfill the obligations and
responsibilities of the office of ______________to the best of my
abilities.

On my honor as a Citizen of Nova Roma, and in the presence of the Gods
and Goddesses of the Roman people and by their will and favor, do I
accept the position of_____________and all the rights, privileges,
obligations, and responsibilities attendant thereto.

4. To vote on the following law:

Lex Iunia Centuriata

This law “Lex Iunia Centuriata” replaces paragraph I of the law “Lex
Vedia Centuriata”. The passage of the former leaves the remainder of
the latter valid. Whenever a consul or praetor convenes the comitia
centuriata, the censores are to issue an edict specifying how many
centuries are to be allocated to the classes. By all such edicts, the
centuries will be allocated to five classes such that Class I will have
the greatest number of centuries, and Class V the least.

5. To vote on the following law:

Lex Cornelia Centuriata

"This law is enacted in order to provide Nova Roma with a standard time
that all of its citizens may refer to, regardless of location in the
world.

"For all purposes, the time in Rome shall be regarded as the official
time of Nova Roma. Official purposes that require the use of this
standard time include, but are not limited to, the time at which voting
in one of the comitia begins and ends, the time at which a newly
appointed magistrate officially acquires his/her office, and the time at
which a magisterial edict takes effect. Magistrates are advised to use
official Nova Roman time in all official announcements."

*End of items to be voted on.*

In Service to Rome,

Lucius Cornelius Sulla,
Consul of Nova Roma
