Salve Gaius Marius Lepidius;

You bear a great historical Praenomen and Nomen, one that saved the republic
many times. And I'm sure you are a great fellow as your cogomen says you
are. In Nova Roma the citizens are the building blocks and the gens the
mortar that binds it
together. You picked good mortar in your family choice. We the citizens are
willing to help you as well as any newly arrived Romanoi. All one needs to
do is to ask.

Greetings fellow Nova Romans!
Out of respect for Nova Roma and its' citizens, I haven't been posting too
much to this list, because I hadn't decided on my Roman name (and din't want
to keep signing my emails with my legal name of Joanne).
Anyway, with the help of Iulia from Arizona and Gens Moravia (thank you my
friends!),
I have come to my decision:
My Roman name is Agata Moravia (Diana)Aventina

I guess I should also mention that I am pleased to announce that I have also
been "adopted" by Gens Moravia!

In peace,
Diana Aventina

Paganist Doreen Valiente Dies at 77

.c The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) - Doreen Valiente, self-styled witch and a central
figure in the revival of paganism in Britain, has died at age 77.

Mrs. Valiente, who died Sept. 1 in Brighton, was the author of
several books, including ``The Rebirth of Witchcraft.'' Her verse and
prose, such as ``The Charge of the Goddess,'' is recited by pagans
all over the world, The Times said in its obituary.

``Hailed by many practicing pagans as the mother of modern
witchcraft, or `Wicca,' she herself declined any such title,
describing herself as a practitioner of the Old Religion,'' The Daily
Telegraph wrote.

Born in London and brought up as a Christian, Mrs. Valiente
claimed to have experienced psychic episodes in her youth and
was a practicing clairvoyant in her teens.

In 1952, a year after Britain repealed its Witchcraft Act, Mrs.
Valiente was introduced to Gerald Gardner, who ran a coven
practicing what he called traditional witchcraft - a religion whose
devotees worshipped the god and goddess of fertility. She was
initiated as a witch in 1953 and became the coven's high priestess.

She had misgivings about the initiation, fearing she would be
required to sell her soul to the devil, The Daily Telegraph said. But,
it added, ``on being reassured that the `Old Religion' admitted no
devil-worship,'' she joined the coven.

Mrs. Valiente collaborated with Gardner on his 1959 book, ``The
Meaning of Witchcraft.'' But by the time it was published, she had
broken off from him and started her own coven.

She published numerous books on witchcraft, the last - ``The
Rebirth of Witchcraft'' - in 1989.

During her life, Mrs. Valiente witnessed and helped generate a
sustained revival of witchcraft and paganism in Britain, despite the
protests of evangelical Christians, according to The Times.

Mrs. Valiente's husband, Casimiro Valiente, a refugee of the
Spanish Civil War, died in 1972. She had no children.

Funeral arrangements were not reported.

Salvete,

The Sodalis Pro Infantia is expanding to include all of the Roman
Family to include not only children, but mothers and fathers and
grandparents. We will concentrate on the eldest and the
youngests (?). The children and the elderly.

I just checked and noticed that the Sodalis is still not on the NR
webpage. I am not sure whether it is yet recognized by NR.
Germanicus recognized it during the Dictatorship, but perhaps he
is still upset at us. Who knows.

In any event, feel free to join or visit the Sodalis, who's name will be
changing to Sodalis Familiaris. Membership is free and open to
anyone, Nova Roman or not. There are no dues or fees. Somehow
I never thought it was right in a family oriented Sodalis. I don't
think the email application is working at the moment, but I will try
to get it up and running before too long (hopefully today, but before
we move).

Again, I thank you for your time,

Salvete,

Now that I am back online, and have returned from Consul Palladius' wedding
in Vermont, it is possible to properly deal with the now long overdue subject
of organizing the Comitia Curiata (Lictors) so that Imperium may be properly
conferred onto the Magistrates.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to get hold of a proper list of Email
addresses for contacting the Lictors. There is only the list of Lictor
"appointees" from the website:

"7) The following individuals are hereby appointed as lictores curiata: Gaius
Iunius Germanus, T Labienus Fortunatus, Gaius Iunius Germanus, Gaius Drusus
Domitianus, Camillus Severus Antoninus, Flavius Vedius Germanicus, Decius
Iunius Palladius, Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Quinta Claudia Lucentia Aprica,
Lucius Fabius Metellus, Augustina Iulia Caesaria Nocturnia, Lucinia Iunia
Cypria, Marcus Martianus Gangalius, Marcus Minucius Audens, Junius Niger
Montis, Gaius Olivarius Mezentius, Paulus Olympius Gallus, Lucius Petronius
Gallus, Gaius Severus Marius Germanicus, Ambrosius Silvanus Virbius, Gnaeus
Tarquinius Caesar, Titia Irisia, Gaius Triumphius Cicero, Piperbaru Ullerius
Venator, Gaius Antonius Scaenicus, Gaius Augustus, Tiberius Caselius
Sidonius, Publius Claudius Lucentius Severus, Marcus Equitius Lentulus, and
Marcus Cornelius Felix."

I would greatly appreciate it if everyone on this list could Email me
personally - you will need to be issued some guidelines from the Pontificial
College before the Comitia Curiata may be convened officially. Thank you!!

No, of course it isn't... but it SHOULD be! Anyone have any idea how we'd go
about adopting it officially? ;) Sounds like the concept of syncretism at
it's best. Maybe Venator, with his Cooking Sodalicium, would have an idea
about the subject!

(Oh, I believe that wedding cake itself was a Roman tradition, but it
wouldn't have been chocolate. Chocolate was brought to Europe from the New
World by the Spanish. Might not even have been a large cake to serve to
guests either, the sources I've seen didn't say one way or another. Could
just as easily have been a small grain cake to offer to the gods... )

Marcus Cassius Julianus

The basis of any government is force, asserted by some at the
command of others, as permitted by law. That is the basis of
imperium. The establishment of imperium would therefore be best
marked by the lictors asserting their willingness to use force at the
behest of the person vested with Imperium.

Rather than a return e-mail "it is so" a statement by the lictors like
"This I will enforce this in accordance with Law." would be
appropriate.

My two cents worth.
