Salve, Your posts are excellent as usual. However, Symmachus was not
addressing a non-existent Christian senatorial majority (since there was
none, the Senate still had a majority of Pagans at time he wrote this
letter). Rather he was addressing the young Valentinian II after the death
of Gratian, who had had removed the Altar a few years before.

At the time Symmachus wrote this was not old--he was at the height of
his career, 43 years of age and prefect of Rome.

Vale,

Decius Iunius Palladius,

Subject: Lamb & Anchovy Sauce

Salvete!

(Apologies in advance to vegetarian citizens)...

Aletheia Moravia and I returned from Viris (Worcester) last night. Such an
absorbing place we never made it to Salinae (Droitwich).

In Viris there is an excellent restaurant where we were intrigued to see on
the menu: 'Shank of Lamb in Olive and Anchovy Sauce'. Seemed Roman to us. We
ordered it. It was DELECTABLE.

Although the chef declined to vouchsafe the recipe, we guess that the lamb
was braised in the olives (whole, pitted, black Baetican olives, we reckon)
with a little water, and a teaspoonful of anchovy sauce added to the liquor
about halfway through (say one teaspoonful of anchovy sauce per pound of
meat with bone), spooned over the meat, which was then slowly cooked until
the meat would fall off the bone at the touch of a fork.

We'd never have considered using anchovy sauce with such a delicate meat as
lamb, but we can't recommend it highly enough. We intend to experiment at
home (the cook wasn't for sale) and we'll let you know the outcome.
Meanwhile, if anyone else would like to have a go too (or already has),
please, PLEASE publish the results!

Valete bene in operibus vostris,

Vado.

Respondeo:
This is a very misleading statement; the same could be said about men in
Ancient Rome. At the same time, however, women *did* have the opportunity
to gain wealth through various investments (i.e. not solely through
inheritance) -- including high risk investments like 'maritime loans'. That
said, even if one is born into wealth, it takes skill to maintain it.

Your recipe sounds quite good except for the anchovy sauce!!! I have
never thought much of anchovies, and wondered if the dish that you
mention tasted heavily of fish, or if the recipe muted the fishy taste
in anyway. I now that in previous experiments with anchovies and fish
sauce, people in NR who tried it on other foods reported a salty flavor
but no addtion of a fishy one. What was your feeling as to the flavors
involved/ Thanks for your interesting recipe!!

I have copied all of your excellent book reviews and intend to use them
in the Eagle. I thank you very much for your efforts in this, and
appreciate your williness to put them on the net for all to use.

I regret our disagreements in the past, and hope at least that we
mayagree to disagree amicably. However this message is one of
appreation for your obvious talent and your effort on the part of Nova

As the Editor of Eagle. I will place these in coming editions of such

On the eve of the final day of voting in this campaign I would like to
take some tim out from the issues before NR to say thank you for all the
help and assistance that I have recieved from my friends in NR. Without
thier assistance, I could not have done the job tat I intended to do..

My primary intention in this race was to run a campaign that did not
bear publicly on individuals in a demeaning way, nor to bring up
concerns other than those concerns of the electorate within NR..

My reason for making this a primary goal was the firm belief that from
the beginning the electorate will elect, and choose the right person for
the organization if they are given a clear choice. Private messages
recieved from citizens, from both sides of the fence indicate that they
thought this campaign was so run. I must also thank my fellow candidate
for having apparantly similar thoughts in mind, as we could not succeed
in that vein without commitment on both our parts.

I have cast my vote today, and will wait patirntly for the rogators to
count the vote and for the final announcement of he who has prevailed.
Before closing, however regardless of how you feel about this campaign
or who you favor in this race, please take the time to vote.

Every singe vote strengthens our nation, every single vote makes every
decision clearer, every single vote satifies each citizen that they have
done thier part for the organizaton that they have agreed to support.
Make yourself heard today, if on no other day, on these topics; make
yourself heard today, if on no other day on these questions; and finally
make yourself heard on this day, if on no other day about these ideas,
proposed laws and people which will affect you and your organizaton for
years to come!!! Vote---Vote---Vote!!!!!

I thank your for your attention during this campaign;

I thank you for your thoughts about my son. He visited Manitowoc
Wisconsin (a place where they built submarines during WWII) I think
that his stay there was somewhat disappointing. He has since then
reconsiered and hss broadened his search into Canada. Where he will end
up, God only knows. He is a determined young man and has a mind of his
own, so I am sure he will pursue his dream to it;s logical conclusion in
his own way. Something familiar about all this!!!!!!! (Grin)

Hi everyone,
It seems that there are a few people who are a
bit sceptical about paying taxes, etc. so I've
thought of a way that Nova Roma can make money
and promote the Via Romana & Roman Paganism at
the same time. Why doesn't Nova Roma make a
calendar of Roman holidays and sell it? I know
that the info is on the website, so it would just
need to be put into a calendar that could be hung
up on the wall with a nice picture for every
month (and maybe a little ritual or two for each
month).
LLewellyn books makes a small fortune from its
Witches Calendar and its Astrology Calendar.
Why doesn't Nova Roma (as a group) do the same
thing? If each member sold a few, the leftover
could be placed in a Nova Roma bank account.

(If someone is already doing this and selling it,
please accept my apologies).

After running a test for Y2K, I was surprised to find that
my system could have likely failed on 01/01/2000 due
to a computer clock glitch.

The "Short Style Date" is almost certain to be mm/dd/YY
and will not roll-over properly on 01/01/2000.
It will become 01/01/00.

This "short date" feeds application software and could well
cause grief after January 1st.

To correct the problem, double-click on the following icons. . .

"My Computer" - "Control Panel - "Regional Settings".

Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page and where it says
"Short Date Sample" check to see if it shows a two-digit year;
It Will - almost guaranteed. This is the default setting for
Windows 95, 98 and NT.

Click on the button across from "Short Date Style" and select
an option that specifies "yyyy" for the year. Be sure your
selection has four "Y's" showing; then click "Apply" and then
"OK" at the bottom. That should fix the glitch.

How many people know about this. Virtually all "Windows"
installations are defaulted to fail the Y2K "Roll-Over"!!!
And yet they say that recent "Windows" is Y2K compliant !

The effect - Who Knows: but everyone should check for this
pervasive and systematic problem. Pass It On !

I wonder what sort of problems ancient Rome had at
Y-Zero-K and Y1K ? Actually only Y1K would have been
a problem; as our current BC-AD / BCE-CE system for
numbering years did not come into use until about 502 AD.
A christian monk put forward a plan to have "Year-One"
represent the time of Christ's birth and it was adopted.
After further and more modern research, Christ is now
thought to have been born circa 4 BC.

Check out our Website http://www.legionxxiv.org
It is loaded with links to other roman legions, suppliers
and contacts, along with historical roman organizations
and data. Our "Links" pages, "Roman Names" page,
"Glossary" and "TimeLines" are quite comprehensive.
Take a look.

Salvete Aventina et alii

It sounds like a good idea.

It would also be a lot of work to put a Roman calendar together, I think. I
would guess that the composition of it would probably have to be divided
among a dozen or so people to finish one in less than a year. I assume that
each festival/holiday would have to be researched, and appropriate artwork
for those days created.

I wonder what M Cassius Iulianus Pontifex Maximus thinks of this idea, since
the official calendar is in the purview of the collegium pontificum, and he
knows printing besides. By the way, is the official NR calendar back online
yet?

Valete

C Marius Merullus
