Great idea! Not only are all the Roman images in public domain, but this is
something that we could design in NR, get it printed and export it to the
real world, via Borders, Dutton, and other booksellers. It would make a
great addition the military history mail order book clubs, and History book
clubs as well. We should all work on this!

Yes, I agree: it would have to be a "team effort"
I am always willing to help with computer stuff
and research. (For me, printing up a calendar is
out of the question since it would cost me 3
times more to print anything in Europe as
compared to the US (plus the postage here is
easily 3 times that of the US).
I also thought of a second idea, something that I
am making for myself as a visual type of
study/meditation aid. I know that this sounds a
bit "new agey" but again, it could raise money.
How about a "Roman Gods/Goddesses Oracle?" It
could be 40 or so "tarot-like" cards, each with a
Roman God/goddess on it. On the back there could
be a summary of what each God represents, the
holiday attributed to him/her, etc.
Anyway, these are just ideas. It is up to
everyone to decide on such projects.
Bright Blessings,

I think we could get one in place for 2001. It's a great idea.

Y'know, as conservative as I tend to be, I think this isn't such a bad
idea. (I usually have a mental block for anything that reeks of New Age.)
As a meditation tool, I like this idea -- as long as no one tries to make
it into a sort of divination tool, I think it's a good idea. I'd buy it. :-)
That reminds me, has anyone seen the new Sacred Source catalog? It has
some great new items, methinks. The Lares and "Lararium" are gone now, but
there are new representations of Vesta, Hygieia and Asclepius, Kore,
Minerva, and a pewter miniature of a wolf with Romulus & Remus (I'm not
sure if these last two are new, though), among others. Check it out.

The calendar for Nova Roma is a good idea. Like most good ideas, it
will need the organization of some people who can do the work. To begin
with probably 3 or 4 people with one person as the co-ordinator to
gather information about resources and services (pictures, printing,
assembly, etc.)
Two years ago a Black Powder shooting group that I belong to decided to
make calendars for sale. We figured that we had more than enough
pictures of the members in period clothes and period scenes to do the
job well. Then we found out the price of colored pictures versus
uncolored, We did not have sufficient funding for colored pictures so
we went with black and white pictures. We selected pictures by
indiviual recommendation and then thinned those down to 12 by election.
We selected paper style, printing style, font, and additional marking of
the dates for battles and events o the French and Indian War Period. We
had 500 made which was a minimum amount allowed by the printer. We had
to sell 350 to break een on the cost of the calendar. It took us
several months (4 I think) to get the calendars, and we had 3 months to
sell them before the new year started. At that time we had 37 members
in the unit and each member sold an average of 12 calendars. We beat
the "break even mark" and made enough money to keep the coffee mess
going for four months without donations. We still have the remainder of
the calendars in the librarian's house. The club voted unanimously not
to repeat the experiment, due to the work involved and felt that a
donation from each person would save a lot of the available resources in
the future.
That does not mean that the idea is a bad one it simply points up some
of the problems of these kind of suggestions is that there is a lot of
work involved in contacting the people who can do the best job for the
least amount of money, with good delivery times and good quality, not to
mention he distribution costs of sening the calenadr all over the US.
foreign lamguae calendars would be a possible consideration as well.
Another problem to be considered , of course, is the distance between
the members. We don't get together too much because we don't live very
close together and for most of us it would be a long trp to meet, and we
would need some fairly tight organization for the effort. It can be
done on the internet, by people who have a more sophisticated computer
set, I am sure, butn not with what I have. I am currently engaged in a
similar set-up with nother NR member, and we will have to work losely
together to work out our expectations o the advantage of NR. .
I am fairly sure that the cards that you mention, are a set of similar
circumstances.
Then there is the problem of a ready work force. Many people have the
idea, I think, that there is a ready workforce in NR to begin work as
soon as the ideas come in, and that may not always be true. Everyone in
NR seems to be quite busy in his / her world outside NR, having
families, raising children, pursueing a career, running a business, home
/ apartment maintenance,, etc. They only have a finite amount of time
to devote to the organization.
I think that the religious calendar and the Meditation Cards are a grand
idea. As Merrullus as indicated the College of Pontiffs should be
notified asking their blessing / approval of each project, get some
resource and Services information together, and put your findings /
information on the List and ask for some help. If no help is
forth-coming then hold on to the idea, and float it again in a few
months. One of our problems is that great ideas are presented, and when
they are not immediately acted upon by others in the organization,, they
fade and die, which is unforntunate.
I'm sure that there are those who will criticize my response to you, but
the above description, I believe, is generally accurate, and has been
the situation for some time now. Any one or all these ideas are
excellent, but they need some people involved in the idea to pursue
them. But meantime we need a steady source of income to alot funds for
the covering of startup and research costs of a new business(s) make
initial investments, and plan for the ownership of land some day, as
well as potential land taxes and maintenance fees. as well as pay the
debts of the organization. The more the business' and a possible
investment fund can contribute to NR finances, the less tax that we will
have to pay, until the business and investments can support NR alone.
I know that this has been a long message, but I think it necssary to be
said. All the best to you and I hope that you will pursue these ideas,
to the extent that you are able. For my part I will inquire into the
costs of both the calendars and cards with my two favorite printers.

Salvete!
To satisfy your curiosity, Audens, the anchovy sauce didn't make the lamb
taste fishy at all (the olives may have helped there), but only enhanced the
meat flavour. It was, of course, rather saltier than you'd expect lamb to
be, and altogether had a stronger, gamier flavour. More like goat, if
anything, tho' not so fibrous. "Mock Kid" would be a good name for the dish!

Salvete iterum!
Diana Aventina's suggestion that we publish a calendar seems an excellent
idea to me. An almanac/diary would, to my mind, be even more useful as it
could appropriate prayers, the Constitution, web links, etc.
In Britannia, Ty Bol produces something similar in spiral-bound, A5 format,
as a general-purpose pagans' almanack, including moon phases, sun sign
changes, festivals in various traditions and brief profiles of various
pantheons.
I agree that it would take several of us to produce it in sections for the
year 2001 if we started now - so, if someone else wants to volunteer to
co-ordinate the project, I'll gladly volunteer my services to help with a
section.

Another idea, which I could do,, would be t bind the 5 excellent book
reports recieved from Varro (great job!!!!) together to gether with some
additional ones from some real historians like Fabius and some other
fellows and gals for the use of all pagans and students information.
That project just needs Varro's permission and I can get it done. If
Varro will provide me with the permission to use the book reports as a
publication, I will undertake to bind them together with any additional
offerings after a given deadlinr date. The idea of a RomanAlamanac and
diary is a good one also. It could also be marketed under the auspices
of Eagle, unless someone wanted to do it as an individual. I will
certainly be willing to advertise the effort in the Eagle if you wsh.

Salvete,
If you like you can down load and then print out a copy of the Roman Calendar from: <a href="http://www.clubs.psu.edu/aegsa/rome/instruct.html" target="_top" >http://www.clubs.psu.edu/aegsa/rome/instruct.html</a>
Look to the bottom of the page.
The full calendar won't print because of its size, unless you have a very large screen and can capture the full image. A printable, but slightly grainy, version of the calendar is available in two sections: kalen1.gif and kalen2.gif. These can be printed directly, if your screen is large enough, but downloading (right-click) and printing from a graphics program will give you more format control, like minimizing the borders. Alternatively, adjust your screen one size larger with the Windows Control Panel DISPLAY option and these sections should then print directly.
I have done this and while a "professional" print would be better it still looks quite nice framed hanging over my Lararium.

Salvete Aventina et alii
It sounds like a good idea.
It would also be a lot of work to put a Roman calendar together, I think. I
would guess that the composition of it would probably have to be divided
among a dozen or so people to finish one in less than a year. I assume that
each festival/holiday would have to be researched, and appropriate artwork
for those days created.
I wonder what M Cassius Iulianus Pontifex Maximus thinks of this idea, since
the official calendar is in the purview of the collegium pontificum, and he
knows printing besides. By the way, is the official NR calendar back online
yet?

It is JBL and in case you (or anyone else) need the url, it's
www.SacredSource.com. You can call a toll-free number (in the US) to get a
catalog, too -- 1-800-290-6203.

Well gee, Marcus Martianus, if they let Windows 95/98 slip by them who's
to say they would catch any lesser glitches?

Great, except I didn't give permission for their
inclusion in the Eagle. The intended use, after their
initial appearance on the list, was for inclusion on
the Book page of the Macellum, to be used as a guide
for those wishing to purchase books on Greco-Roman
paganism (and, indeed, the ones on Greek paganism were
originally written for and posted to Hellenion--I got
a bit carried away the other day). I retain copyright,
and, at the moment, do not give permission for
publication other than in the Macellum.
