Salve L. M. Fimbria et Salvete Omnes,

No, I do not want to make an exception in this case though, as you may
gathered from my initial message, I was sorely tempted and perhaps more
than tempted. One poster, perhaps projecting his own desires, said
I wanted to use my imperium. While I rarely am eager to use it, on this
occasion I was ready to use it. However, I have not checked email since
then and upon reflection, realize that I probably overreacted.

I would not want to see someone banned after a single message,
though if anything would tempt me to do so, spam would be it.
I do not think people who send spam are well-intentioned or considerate. I
think what really annoyed me was that the list was only one
of dozens of addresses the message was sent to. (I got the message twice
myself) I figured this was some kind of bot that collected all the
addresses from a site (all the @novaroma.org addresses were there) and
perhaps even automatically joined any any lists on a site and then
blanketed them with email.

Even though this is quite possibly the case, some slight hesitation in
such situations is needed. I leave this in Maria Fimbria's capable hands,
and she has handled the situation ably so far.

Salvete, Quirites
If anyone wants to see pictures I have them, emial me and I will forward them to you since I can't send them to the list anymore.
Howard Waddel (Albion Armorers) lives about 4 miles from me. I was at his house last Friday with Quintus Darius (aka Matthew Amt) and handled these helmets myself. They are well made and as accurate historically as they are able to make them. Howard contacted us because he is not just a business man but this is his passion and he say he want to do thing historical (the whole basement lavel of his home is devoted to swords and armor, books, tools, etc). We have been consulting with Howard on all aspects of Roman 'kit' from paterae (bronze cooking skillets) to riveted chainmail. I have been working on making sword handles for Howard myself, so that he should soon be able to offer accurate Gladii (Pompeii, Fulham and Mainz).

So where are the Negau and Montefortino type helmets of the Republic?
Discrimination! QFM

He is concentrating on Imperial era first then expanding, as most reenactors of Roman Armies seem to be potraying the 1st century AD. I'll be the first to get a Montefortino as I am more interested in the Republican era than the Imperial :-)

Subject: I H I, the organized use of Roman reinactors in historical presentations. (Long
From: SFP55@--------
Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 12:05:48 EDT
Salvete!
With the scholarly gap between layperson and educator constantly shrinking,
it would appear that Nova Roma could find a niche. What follows is an
announcement from Dr. Bishop concerning the Inaugural Meeting of the
Institute of Historical Interpretation. Are any of our Britannic civvies
attending this seminar? If not one should. NR presence has to start being
made. What better way then to start here? If this is successful, NR should
sponsor one of these in connection with a local university here in the
states.
Valete!
Q. Fabius
.
Following a workshop in Oxford last November, the Institute of Historical
Interpretation has been set up to facilitate cooperation and mutual
understanding between live interpretation groups, historians,
archaeologists, the heritage industry, and educationalists, in order to
exchange information and improve the quality of public presentations. The
IHI was conceived by a small group consisting of live interpreters from
re-enactment societies and living history groups, historians and heritage
professionals.

Re-enacters are thought to re-enact only for themselves with the groups
being mainly concerned with the enjoyment of their members. However
re-enacters see themselves as educators, entertainers and researchers, and
many are concerned with the quality and content of the displays and the lack
of communication with interested parties. Re-enactment and live
interpretation are powerful communication tools, with the capacity to change
people's perceptions on history or to perpetuate myth. The Institute is a
forum in which academic historians, archaeologists and heritage
professionals, can exchange views with re-enactors and live interpreters.
It should allow the opportunity for heritage professionals and historians to
influence the type and content of historical live interpretation currently
being presented to the public. It gives live interpreters access to current
historical thinking, and an informal medium in which to discuss future
requirements with potential sponsors. Archaeologists have a forum to discuss
experimental archaeology with living history participants.

Academic historians, archaeologists, heritage professionals, educators,
re-enactors and live interpreters are all being invited to become involved.
Anyone with an interest in heritage, public history, academic history,
living history, experimental archaeology and re-enactment is encouraged to
attend the inaugural meeting, to include their ideas and opinions about the
future of live interpretation at historic sites.

The Institute hopes to encourage standards in presentation and display.
Sponsors and the public should be informed about the historical and
educational relevance of displays, whether they are historical battle
pageant, with noise, colour and spectacle or potentially much smaller, more
accurate living history presentations. Different types of display attract
different types of sponsor and the Institute aims to help awareness of
presentation techniques and historical accuracy.

In addition it aims to co-ordinate a pertinent educational programme for
those involved with live historical interpretation, to aid the acquisition
of relevant knowledge and skills, whether it be traditional farming or
cottage industry skills, research methods or visitor management and health &
safety.

Obviously all this will take time and will be a gradual process, but as a
starting point the Institute is producing a biannual journal.
First Issue of the IHI Journal available at the Inaugural Meeting or from
Partizan Press in November 1999.

You are able to influence discussions about the Institute and it's aims by
attending the inaugural meeting. This will take place at "The Re-enactor's
Market", Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, Oxford on Saturday 13th Nov 1999 at
12 noon. The meeting is expected to formally agree the aims of the
Institute, agree a committee and editorial board for the Journal, and
discuss the way forward.
Anyone with an interest in heritage, public history, academic history,
living history and re-enactment is encouraged to attend to include their
ideas and opinions about the future of live interpretation at historic
sites.

Inaugural Meeting:

Saturday 13th Nov 1999 at 12 noon.
at
The Re-enactor's Market,
Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, Oxford.

Directions: From the A34 Oxford ring road, take the B480 heading out of
town. At the traffic lights with the Bull Nose Morris Public House on the
right, turn right. Take a left hand turn into Pegasus Road, the Leisure
Centre is on the right.

"The Re-enactor's Market" is the main outlet in the UK for makers and
traders in reproduction period equipment and clothing, where they can sell
their wares to live interpreters and museums. There are over 100 stalls. It
takes place three times a year, twice at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre in
Oxford, and once at "History in Action", the English Heritage premier event
at Kirby Hall, Northants.

Not to the List directly, but you can still share them... If you go to
onelist.com and login, you'll see a page called 'My ONElist' which will
show all the ONElists to which you are subscribed. If you click on
[novaroma], you'll get to the List's Community page. Select 'Files',
then 'Upload File' into the Shared Files area (I've already set up a

Subject: New Religio Romana Internet List! :)
From: Cassius622@--------
Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 22:29:11 EDT
Salvete Omnes,

In the interest of making more religious facilities available, the Collegium
Pontificum has opened a new Onelist mailing list dedicated specifically to
the Religio Romana: ReligioRomana@--------

Here's the basic info as posted on the Onelist site:

"Description:
Nova Roma's official forum for the discussion of the Religio Romana. Open to
Citizens and non-Citizens. All topics directly relating to ancient Roman
Religion and its modern reconstructed practice are welcome. Subjects of
discussion may include rites and rituals, deities, the Mysteries, religious
history and archaeology, festivals and sacred days, and more. This list is
also a forum for official communication among the Nova Roman priesthoods and
Citizens who honor the ancient Roman Goddesses and Gods."

The ReligioRomana list is open to pagans and non Pagans alike, although
discussion will be focused primarily on practice rather than general debate.

Topics concerning the Religio Romana will no doubt continue to appear on the
Main list as well, but this new list will hopefully create a place where
those who practice the Religio may discuss spiritual topics at length without
taking up more than a fair share of bandwidth on the Main List.

To subscribe to the ReligioRomana list send an Email saying "subscribe" in
both the subject and message to:

ReligioRomana-subscribe@--------

Or, you can visit the Onelist site at www.onelist.com and key in "Religio
Romana" into their search engine. The ReligioRomana list will come up and you
can follow step by step instructions from there. As with all Onelist lists,
you can subscribe in Digest form if you don't wish to recieve too many
messages in your inbox.

Hope to see you on the new list! :)

Valete,

Marcus Cassius Julianus
Pontifex Maximus
(on behalf of the Collegium Pontificum)
