Salve,
Is this period ready to be written about so recently after it occurred? It
may open old wounds depending on what is said in the work. I know I for one
made a few hasty comments (made from ignorance on several issues it must be
said) as I am sure everybody did, and I wasn't even involved. Shouldn't this
be left for some time?

Salve,
I agree totally :-). It's just that I ,along with many others I hope, do not
want to rehash it again. I actually resigned my citizenship during the
crises and realising that I was too hasty renounced my resignation, all
within 15 minutes!! It was a very traumatic experience. All's well that ends
well I suppose.

Salve!
I figure that since I have common interests with the group, and since
various members have given so generously of their time to answer my
questions, I should join the group...
Anyway, I wanted to ask about names.
I was thinking of calling myself:
Josephus (one of my middle names) Something Australius
Or should that be Australicus or Australianus? :)
Does anyone know a good Gens to join? I suppose I could always start
Monronius... Monrovius? *Crosseyed look*
Any comments welcome! *blithely*

the breakdown of the details are received from the Rogatores. I thank them
for their hard and often unappreciated work on behalf of Nova Roma.
Believe me, we owe Gaius Marius Merullus and Titus Labienus Fortunatus an
immense debt for their work in these elections.
I congratulate all the winners of the various races, and thank each and
every one of you for voting. You made this election the most highly
attended in Nova Roma history! I hope that this trend of increased
involvement only continues.
A reminder to all magistrates-elect that your oath of office is to be
taken on the day that you take office, January 1, 2000, at or after 12:01
AM Roman time, 1800 (6 PM EST). As mandated by law, you will not
officially hold your position until that oath is taken.

Salve Aule Sarmatice
Even my first name Alexander is not "purely" Latin, but noone discuss
it.
I find Josephus to a pretty Roman name. Just remember the historician
Josephus Flavius. I think all the names used in ancient Roman
mediterranian world are quite suitable for our new citizens. As for
Josephus we have got one and he is Josephus Aurelianus Pannonicus.
Bene vale

AFAIK, the names NRomans choose are usually original ancient Roman
names,
that can be found at URL http://www.novaroma.org/via_romana/names.html.
So
Josephus and Australius do not seem to be Roman;-). You can use
Australius
for a additional cognomen, as SARMATICVS in my name.

I think Alexander is Hellenic/Greek (very appropriate for NR therefor),
since Josephus is certainly jewish... Please not to think that I'm

Salve,
Josephus Flavius's name was (if memory serves) Joseph Ben Mathias. He was
Jewish, but switched sides (under strange circumstances) during the
Jewish War, and adopted the cognomen of the Flavii to honor the Roman
generals to whom he attached himself (Vespasianus and his son, Titus).
He's a classic example of a non-Roman romanizing his name.
Vale,
L. Sergius Aust.

I would agree with you, except that for some reason, people
say nasty things on public email lists that they would
never dream of saying face to face (with a room full of
people to witness it). Perhaps those newcomers that are
nosey and gossipy (whoops! I meant to type "interested")can
ask in private to their paterfamilias for details as to the
history of Nova Roma.

Deplorable? Hmmm, I've had worse comments to things that
I've said :-)

Perhaps Nova Roma should appoint an Historian to compile an accurate
and impartial Official History of Nova Roma. The great Roman historians of
the past (Livy, The Divine Claudius, Suetonius, etc..) would be disgusted if
the witnessed the possibility of a new begining of Roma that is not recorded!

Tiberius Augustus Claudius;
We did have a Historian who did a great job! We would like to have him

Merrullus' message asking for anyone new to NR who is interested and

I'll do my best to fulfill what is expected from me as Praetor.
I would also like to congratulate all the victors in these elections, as

On the above subject you could also adopt a name from the many Roman
Gravestones that have been recorded in the archaelogical archives, as I
did. I chose the name of a Roman who was involved in the kind of work
that I wanted to study and from a miltary background. My Roman
Paterfamilius is Marcus Minucius Audens, XXth Legio, Milles Immunes
(Soldier immune fatigues), gromaciti (military surveyor), and gubernator
(pilot-probably river or coastal) who died and was buried in Roman
Britain. Thus, I have pursued the studty of Roman Military Engineering
and Cartography following in my anchestor's footsteps.
So, by adopting this name, I also adopt a possible course of study, a
new hobby (retired), and a new provincia. Although I was born and live
in the United States (Yankee!!!!!) I have adopted vicariosly Great
Britain as well. In my estimation a bargain all round!!!

Savete, Citizens;
I agree to some degree with Australicus and Aventina in regard to the
potetial disagreement over any history written now. Norally histories
of this sort are left until after the demise of the principals. I am
sure that there are some things which I may have said and /or done
during that "conflict period" which from hind sight, I wish I could
change, and I suspect that many will feel that way as well. To that
extent, I believe that any "history" of that period should be conducted
on a low-key basis. As we have seen, those who acted for the best of
reasons will never be beieved by contemporaries of the opposite view,
and I feel that those people who served to the best of their ability,
should be protected from the 20-20 hind-sight that will be leveled at
them, regardless of ho carefully the "history" is researched and
written.
On the other hand, were the many troubled periods of Roman History not
recorded we would not be here doing as we are doing, and I believe that
the history should be written at some time in the future, by someone who
was not a participant. As for the newcomers to NR, I have gone to some
trouble to provide a general view of what happened in order for you to
pursue your individual research, so as not to publicy embarass or harass
those involved. As I also included in that message, there are also some
deep feelings remaining about this topic. Do your research if you must
for your satisfaction, but I really do not believe your personal
satisfaction merits the disturbing of old wounds so recently opened of
people who have served NR in the past.

All right everybody. We have changed our e-mail address. We can still
receive e-mail at the AOL account and the dune.net account. AOL was just
entirely too slow. Juno is cheaper in any event. We are sending this to
all the lists we are signed with.
Pax vobiscum,
Crys and Don
