Salvete, citizens!
Our august consul has declared the Parentalia, but I want to remind
everyone that today is Lupercalia. I don't actually suggest that the
young gentlemen of Nova Roma grease their bodies and run naked through
their towns blessing women with fertility. But do feel free to do
something a little crazy (within the bounds of the law, of course). I'll
let your imaginations supply the details.
Of course, much of the world celebrates today as Valentine's Day. If the
Romans had known about chocolate, they might have instituted a similar
celebration.
Uh, Cassius and I won't be answering the phone tonight ... ;)
Patricia Cassia . Quaestor, Nova Roma

Salvete, Citizens of Nova Roma;
I, Marcus Minucius Audens, stand before you in Forum to announce this
sacred day, XV Februarius / February 15: I stand with head covered and
voice mute in silent respect for this day; a celebration sacred to
Faunus. The luperci priests sacrifice goats and dog, as well as sacred
cakes. Afterwards, two young nobles are smeared with the sacrificial
blood and the luperci don the hides of goats and run through the streets
striking passersby with strips of goatskin to promote fertility. It is
a festival of much revelry.
I would ask in the absence of my Chaplain, due to his illness, that a
Pontiff, Priest or Priestess provide a suitable prayer and offering to
the God we honor this day.
Valete, With Great Respect and Humble Heart;
Marcus Minucius Audens
Consul et Senator

Its a very weird festival. The strips of goatskin were dipped in milk. And
women would try to get in the way so that their shoulders would be hit.
Women's shoulders were considered one of the "Danger zones" as it was very
"Naughty" for a woman to bare her shoulders. The Romans must have believed
that Shoulders were an integral part of reproduction.

Salvete, Citizens of Nova Roma;
I rise in Forum to support the appeal of my colleague for the
consideration of a donation to Nova Roma. I do not wish any citizen to
get the wrong idea. I have supported a method of taxation for the
micronation throughout my past political endeavor, because I have
believed and presently still believe that ultimately such will be
necessary. However, I have recieved some very strong arguments from
some very wise men and women who are my respected colleagues, and I
would be, in my opinion, a fool not to consider their views and more
importanty consider the source of those views and why they differ so
drastically with my own----So, in retrospect, I am willing to be proven
wrong for the following three reasons:
One--If I am proven wrong and donations will fund the micronation
according to our Senate approved Budget, then a great deal of disharmony
within Nova Roma will disappear;
Two--If I am proven wrong then the effort that would have been used in
developing a fair and equitable taxation program can be directed
elsewhere to the benefit of Nova Roma;
Three-- If I am proven wrong, then the possibility of losing membership
over the taxation question will be removed from consideration.
As I have said, I do not think that donations will match the even most
conservative budget that is presently approved and in use. I have been
extremely open and vocal in that respect, and everyone who has voted for
me in the past, certainly knows that. However, I would, for the above
three reasons, like very much to be proven wrong.
I have been asked if I am proven to be wrong in this case, would it not
reflect on my ability to determine the necessary direction of Nova Roma
as a Consul. My reply is that I do not think so. A person who never
makes a mistake, has probably never done anything worthwhile. I base my
above beliefs on my experience in the administration of many volunteer
organizations over the years, however, I cannot say that I have ever
been elected to the position of a Chief Magistrate in a virtual
micronation in that volume of experience. There is always room to
learn, ad anyone who does not take that into their consideration, in my
opiion will face diffculty in the future.
Therefore, in closing, again I join with my colleague in bringing this
matter to your attention. I have forwarded my donation previously to
the Quaestor Patricia Cassia, and I hope sincerely that those who have
opposed a taxation program for Nova Roma are proven correct.
Valete, Respectfully;
Marcus Minucius Audens;
Consul et Senator
