Salvete omnes,
I just received my Lar statues from Sacred Source/JBL Statues. They came in
a pair. One is painted to look bronze and the other is painted to look like
wood.
Is there a significance in that there are two statues (one "bronze" and one
"wood")?
I'm just curious if I'm missing something.

Salvete Dexippe et alii
I don't think that there's any significance to it. I seem to recall reading
in somewhere, maybe in their catalog, that you could buy two with the same
finish for a few bucks extra. Maybe they're hoping that people will return
one and agree to pay a higher price to replace it with the other finish. It
wouldn't surprise me too much.
The "wood" one looks like plain clay to me. But what the hell do I know?
I am very comfortable with the two different finishes. If you don't like it
that way, you may want to go the route that Cincinnatus did and paint them
yourself. He sent me a picture of the result, and it looked very good.
By the way, someone (Vado?) once pointed out that here that the Penates
plaque didn't look authentic, that it looked like a certain Lararium image
from Pompeii, or something to that effect. That may be true, but there is
an image, on the Ara Pacis I believe, of Aeneas and Iulus sacrificing a pig.
In the background, the Penates, brought to Italia from Illium, are
represented, housed in a small (or distant, though it's tough to tell with
ancient images) aedes. The Sacred Source plaque, at least superficially,
resembles the front of that aedes.

Thanks Merullus,
I'm fine with the way they look. I just was curious why two different types
of finishes.
I've also bought a wall niche from Design Toscano that will display the Lars
over my already established Lararium. They look great!
Vale!

Is it by any chance a Hewlett Packard? I have an extra card for a Black and
White Hewlett Packard Flat Bed Scanner, and I might just throw in the Black

Salve Citizens of Nova Roma and All that have been reading this series,
You may find this quite stupendous, but the Ancient Egyptians may have had
contact with the "New World." Several Pharaohs from very Ancient Egypt upon
being exhumed and examined... Tobacco and Tobacco seeds were found inside the
Pharaoh's stomach.
Tobacco is Native to south and North America, so it should be impossible for
the Mummies to have these plants inside their stomach. But it does bring up
the possibility that Ancient Egypt had shipping across the Atlantic, or maybe
even trade with another group of peoples who had shipping across the Atlantic.
I found the information on PBS a program called "Revealing The Secrets of the
Pharaohs"

Salvete,
You're a lucky person! JBL is discontinuing their Lar statues, meaning that
there won't be a company in the entire world that produces them. I thought
they had to be sold out by this point.
The reason your statues are two colors has nothing whatever to do with
ancient Rome. JBL gets their statuary from India... and the folks in India
paint the statuary with whatever paint happens to be handy. I honestly think
that no two JBL statues are the same color. The piece you recieve is almost
*never* the same color as the one you liked so much in their catalog! :P
There may well have been variations over time, but the Lar statues I'm
personally familiar with were small bronze casted figures. They'd have
been... well... bronze color.
BTW, while on the subject, not only is JBL dropping their Roman line like a
hot potato, they've also never paid Nova Roma for sales to Citizens as they
originally agreed. I'm right now negotiating with a new statuary company that
not only produces their statues in uniform colors, but also might well pay us
for endorsements.
Valete,

Wow! I've already found the proper SCSI card and should have it in hand by
tomorrow, but the offer is *much* appreciated! :)

Great! Should have gotten to you yesterday according to UPS, but I guess you
can never tell. The flags ARE nice though! Glad you like yours!
